9th Annual International Conference of the Biologically-Inspired-Cognitive-Architectures-Society (BICA) held as part of the Joint Multi-Conference on Human-Level Artificial Intelligence (HLAI)

The paper considers the well known cognition emotion primacy debate between Zajonc and Lazarus in the period 1980-1982. The paper also considers the less known contribution to that debate, given in the same time, in 1981, by an Artificial Intelligence system, the crossbar adaptive array (CAA) artificial neural network. The CAA system was the first artificial neural network that implemented cognitive processing together with emotion processing. While Zajonc proposed that emotion is computed first, and Lazarus proposed that cognition is computed first, the CAA architecture suggested that both emotion and cognition are computed simultaneously. This paper reviews the cognition-emotion primacy problem stated by Zajonc and Lazarus in 1980-82, and also reviews the 1981-82 CAA solution of that problem. (C) 2018 The Authors. This plenary keynote paper marks 35-th anniversary of description of the first artificial brain, a neural network which in addition of computing cognitive actions, computes emotive evaluations of the consequence of those actions. It was designed in 1981, as part of an effort within the adaptive Networks Group of the COINS Department of University of Massachusetts in Amherst to solve the problems of (1) designing a delayed reinforcement learning mechanism for artificial neural networks and (2) designing a self learning system which will learn without external reinforcement of any kind. This paper describes steps which led toward solution of those problems. The proposed artificial brain, named crossbar adaptive array, can be viewed as a model of cognition-emotion interaction in biological brains, and can be used in building brains for cognitive and emotive robotics.

The paper describes modeling of cognition-emotion interaction implemented in a neural network named crossbar adaptive array in 1981. The architecture was proposed to meet two challenges: solving the delayed reinforcement learning problem for neural networks, and building a self-learning system (no advice and no reinforcement from environment) based on a neural network. The architecture introduced computation of feelings, and their interaction with learning and decision making mechanisms. It also introduced genetic environment as provider of initial emotions to the neural network. Receiving initial emotions from the genetic environment, the architecture learns using the proposed emotion backpropagation mechanism. Some developments after 1981 are also discussed.
