This article presents a new efficient method for optimal placement and sizing of wind power generators (WPG) in power networks with an objective of coping maximum loadability margin and minimizing reactive power loss. A new total voltage stability based on continuation power flow (CPF) theorem is used to model the problem. The method also highlights the effects of random characteristics of wind resources on loadability margin. cuckoo search algorithm is applied to find the optimum placement and sizing of WPG since it presents several advantages of few control parameters, high solution quality and fast computational time. The experiment results of IEEE 9-bus show that the optimum location and size of WPGs are different from those considering power system loss and voltage deviation in objective function of the optimization process. A significant effect of the random characteristic of wind resource during load demand growth is revealed. The simulation results show that the CSA can be an efficient and promising method for optimal placement and sizing of WPG in power networks problem.

cuckoo search algorithm (CSA) is one of the new nature inspired meta-heuristic algorithms for solving many engineering optimization problems. This paper investigates the application of CSA technique for the tuning of proportional integral derivative (PID) structured Thyristor Controlled Series Compensator (TCSC) based controller to improve damping of the power system when subjected to different disturbances at various loading conditions. The dynamic performances of proposed approach are analyzed by taking an example of Single Machine Infinite Bus (SMIB) power system in MATLAB/Simulink environment. The superiority of the proposed approach is demonstrated by comparing the simulation results with previously published technique such as Non-dominated Sorting Genetic algorithm-II (NSGA-II) based TCSC controller for the same power system.

Optimal sizing and sitting of Capacitor alone and various combinations of Capacitor with Distributed Generations (DG) units have been done by cuckoo search algorithm (CSA) with the goal of minimization of overall cost. Such allocations of reactive and real power sources not only reduces the total cost but minimizes the real power loss, enhances the voltage profile and provide reliability benefits also. The formulated cost function depends upon cost per unit loss, installation cost due to Capacitor and DG allocation and also the cost associated for per kVAr and kW injection of Capacitor and DG respectively. Basic reliability index such as failure rate has been estimated before and after allocation of the reactive and real power sources. The proposed technique has been implemented in standard IEEE 33 bus radial distribution system to check the effectiveness of the proposed method. It has been found that the performance of two Capacitor and two DG allocation is the best among the chosen combinations of Capacitors and DGs.

cuckoo search algorithm (CS) is a kind of bionic swarm optimization algorithm, which is simple and convenient. Although it has obvious advantages, it cannot converge to the optimal solution when dealing with high dimensional complex problems, so its global search ability needs to be improved. In this paper, opposition-based learning (OBL) strategy and local enhanced search are introduced to improve the basic CS. In the selection stage, an opposition-based swarm (ob-swarm) is generated on the basis of the original swarm. If an old cuckoo individual from the original swarm may be discarded, three cuckoo individuals are randomly selected from the ob-swarm to produce a new individual. The old one will be replaced by the new one if the new one is better. At the end of each generation, a potential optimal solution will be searched for locally around the current global optimal solution in the evolution direction. This local searching operation can make up the problem that the search step may be not appropriate. The simulation results show that the improved algorithm improves the global search ability, convergence speed and convergence precision of the algorithm.

Despite its simplicity and efficiency, the CS is easy to suffer from the premature convergence and fall into local optimum. In this study, a differential CS extension with balanced learning namely DFCS is proposed. In DFCS, two sets including the better fitness set (FSL) and the better diversity set (DSL) are produced in the iterative process. Two excellent individuals are selected from two sets to participate, which improved the search ability by learning their beneficial behaviors in search process. The performance of DFCS algorithm is evaluated on the logistics distribution problem. The results show that DFCS algorithm has stronger competitiveness in solving logistics distribution problem than CS algorithm.

Fractal image reconstruction through iterated function systems (IFS) is a very hot topic of research. Yet, existing methods have focused exclusively on binary or gray level images, and the case of colored images has been largely ignored so far. This paper aims to tackle this issue for colored fractal images by coupling a swarm intelligence method called cuckoo search algorithm and k-means clustering. To show the performance of the method, an illustrative example is discussed in detail. The numerical and graphical results show that the method is effective and very promising, as it is able to recover both the geometry and color of the input fractal image, but it still yields sub-optimal solutions to this problem and should be further improved.

This paper presents the application of cuckoo search algorithm (CSA) in optimizing the control variables of power system operation in solving the optimal reactive power dispatch (ORPD) problem. CSA is inspired by the parasitic behavior of cuckoo birds in reproduction process based on the probability for a host bird in discovering an alien egg in its nest. The implementation of CSA in determining the optimal value of control variables such as generator bus voltages, transformer tap setting and shunt reactive elements in order to obtain the minimize loss in the system. In this paper, IEEE-30 bus system is utilized to show the effectiveness of CSA and then the comparison with other nature inspired algorithms will be presented.
