Assimilation of linear viscoelastic measurements by joint inference of relaxation spectrum

We develop a two-stage computational method to assimilate linear viscoelastic material functions (LMFs), viz., stress relaxation modulus, creep compliance, and the complex modulus, by inferring a consensus discrete relaxation spectrum (dRS) that simultaneously fits all three LMFs. In the first stage, the dRS corresponding to the different LMFs is deduced independently, before they are combined heuristically to generate an initial guess for the consensus dRS. In the second stage, this initial guess is refined using nonlinear least squares regression. The effectiveness of this method for data fusion and validation is demonstrated by analyzing experimental data collected on two different polymer melt systems. We also investigate the performance of the method when the timescales probed by the LMFs do not overlap, or are limited to 4-6 decades, as is typically the case for thermorheologically complex materials. To explore these questions, we generate synthetic datasets by obscuring information from one of the experimental datasets. We find that the computational protocol works quite well. As expected, the quality of the inferred dRS is marginally impaired because information is suppressed.

ARC-LIGHT:d* algorithm for Robust Characterization of Lunar Surface Imaging for Ground Hazards and Trajectory

Safe and reliable lunar landings are crucial for future exploration of the Moon. The regolith ejected by a lander's rocket exhaust plume represents a significant obstacle in achieving this goal. It prevents spacecraft from reliably utilizing their navigation sensors to monitor their trajectory and spot emerging surface hazards as they near the surface. As part of NASA's 2024 Human Lander Challenge (HuLC), the team at the University of Michigan developed an innovative concept to help mitigate this issue. We developed and implemented a machine learning (ML)-based sensor fusion system, ARC-LIGHT, that integrates sensor data from the cameras, lidars, or radars that landers already carry but disable during the final landing phase. Using these data streams, ARC-LIGHT will remove erroneous signals and recover a useful detection of the surface features to then be used by the spacecraft to correct its descent profile. It also offers a layer of redundancy for other key sensors, like inertial measurement units. The feasibility of this technology was validated through development of a prototyped* algorithm, which was trained on data from a purpose-built testbed that simulates imaging through a dusty environment. Based on these findings, a development timeline, risk analysis, and budget for ARC-LIGHT to be deployed on a lunar landing was created.

Risk-aversed* algorithmic support and inventory management

We study how managers allocate resources in response tod* algorithmic recommendations that are programmed with specific levels of risk aversion. Using the anchoring and adjustment heuristic, we derive our predictions and test them in a series of multi-item newsvendor experiments. We find that highly risk-aversed* algorithmic recommendations have a strong and persistent influence on order decisions, even after the recommendations are no longer available. Furthermore, we show that these effects are similar regardless of factors such as source of advice (i.e., human vs.d* algorithm) and decision autonomy (i.e., whether thed* algorithm is externally assigned or chosen by the subjects themselves). Finally, we disentangle the effect of risk attitude from that of anchor distance and find that subjects selectively adjust their order decisions by relying more ond* algorithmic advice that contrasts with their inherent risk preferences. Our findings suggest that organizations can strategically utilize risk-aversed* algorithmic tools to improve inventory decisions while preserving managerial autonomy.

Generalization of Adler's Three-dimensional Proportional Navigation Law

A nonlinear 3-d navigationd* algorithm based on a generalization of the classical law by Adler is developed. In the development of the engagement kinematics it is shown that choosing two opposite directions of the unit normal to the lead angle plane formed by the missile velocity and the line of sight (LOS), and two different roots of a quadratic equation associated with the true collision velocity, one arrives at four different scenarios which give rise to distinct missile trajectories and distinct interception times. Through numerical simulation, it is shown that one of the choices leads to a missile trajectory that deviates from the target, while the other three result in interception of the target. The generalization of Adler's proportional navigation comprises two equations, a linear one and a nonlinear relation that possesses the turning rates of the LOS, the navigation gain, the lead angle, the range, and a velocity correction that brings the instantaneous collision-course velocity vector on the locus of the missile velocity. Numerical tests based on the generalized 3-d navigation scheme and Adler's proportional navigation law are compared and discussed. The generalized law is found to require less acceleration for intercept.

Innovative Method to Select Optimal Plugging Materials for Preventing Loss Circulation in deep Fractured Reservoirs Using Machine Learning

Lost circulation, a critical issue in drilling operations caused by drilling fluid loss into formation fractures, is a significant barrier in the exploration and production of oil, natural gas, and geothermal reservoirs. Effective design of the plugging formula to mitigate such losses is vital for the successful extraction of these resources. To efficiently design the plugging formula, in this paper we determine the key performance parameters of plugging materials based on the formation mechanism of the plugging zone, using them as feature input variables. We then use multitask learning (MTL) to establish a high- precision prediction model for the plugging formula, followed by the development of a mathematical optimization model for selecting performance parameters of the plugging formula, with displacement pressure and cumulative loss volume as the objective functions. An improved particle swarm optimization (PSO)d* algorithm is used to solve this mathematical model and determine the characteristic parameters of the plugging formula. Based on these parameters, the appropriate types of plugging materials, including bridging materials, fillers, and deformable reinforcement materials, are identified for the formula. The results show that the improved PSOd* algorithm outperforms the basic PSOd* algorithm, geneticd* algorithms, and whale optimizationd* algorithms in solving the mathematical optimization model, with a performance improvement of about 10%. Additionally, sensitivity analysis confirms the model's robustness, revealing that bridging materials play a critical role in the effectiveness of the plugging formula. As the variety of bridging, filling, and deformable reinforcement materials increases, their displacement pressure improves. More specifically, the analysis explores how the friction coefficient, d90 particle- size distribution, thermostability, compressive strength, and acid solubility of bridging materials affect displacement pressure and cumulative loss volume.

Ship pipe production optimization method for solving distributed heterogeneous energy-efficient flexible flowshop scheduling with mobile resource limitation

The ship pipe workshop stands out as the complicated production system, which operates with characteristics like multi-factory configuration, multi-mobile resource and multi-processing mode. Stemming from the bottleneck issue of ship pipe production and the urgent demand for green intelligent production, this paper investigates a distributed heterogeneous energy-efficient flexible flowshop scheduling, where the limited mobile resource, permutation flowshop and flexible flowshop are explicitly and simultaneously taken into account. With the integration of multiple goals and complex constraints, an integer programming model is well-established, aiming to minimize the makespan and total energy consumption simultaneously. To address this problem, an effective shuffled frog leaping differential evolutiond* algorithm, named SFL-dEA, is proposed. Within the SFL-dEA, an innovative good-point set initialization is well-designed to improve the initial solution group. To further promote the searchability of SFL-dEA, we introduce several effective operations, including hybrid self-adaptive double differential strategy, bidirectional crossover strategy and modified shuffled frog leapingd* algorithm. Extensive experiments and comparisons corroborate the effectiveness and versatility of the presented SFL-dEA in addressing the studied problem. The findings are very valuable to curtail the delay cost and promote the environmental pollution issue for manufacturing industries especially in the ship pipe workshop.

A map c : V(G) -> {1,. .. , k} of a graph G is a packing k-coloring if every two different vertices of the same color i is an element of {1,. .. , k} are at distance more than i. The packing chromatic number chi rho(G) of G is the smallest integer k such that there exists a packing k-coloring. In this paper we introduce the notion of Grundy packing chromatic number, analogous to the Grundy chromatic number of a graph. We first present a polynomialtimed* algorithm that is based on a greedy approach and gives a packing coloring of any graph G. We then define the Grundy packing chromatic number Gamma rho(G) of a graph G as the maximum value that thisd* algorithm yields in G. We present several properties of Gamma rho(G), provide results on the complexity of the problem as well as bounds and some exact results for Gamma rho(G). (c) 2025 Elsevier B.V. Initial Boundary Value Problem for Partial differential-Algebraic Equations With Parameter

The paper addresses an initial boundary value problem for a partial differential-algebraic equation involving a parameter. An integral condition with respect to the time derivative of the unknown function is provided as an additional condition to determine this parameter. The dzhumabaev parameterization method is employed to solve the problem. The domain is subdivided, and functional parameters are defined as the values of the solution along the internal lines of the subdomains. This reformulates the original problem into an equivalent initial boundary value problem for a system of hyperbolic equations with parameters and associated functional relations. The paper developsd* algorithms to solve the problem, demonstrating their applicability. Furthermore, conditions for the existence and uniqueness of a solution to the initial boundary value problem, involving the partial differential-algebraic equation with a parameter and discrete memory, are established.

Misclassification in Workers' Telecommuting Frequency Choices Using a Generalized Extreme Value Model

Telecommuting frequency is a response variable collected in travel surveys and is, therefore, prone to errors leading to mismeasurements or misclassification. Misclassification of explanatory variables is a common risk when using statistical modeling techniques. We define "misclassification" as a response reported or recorded in the wrong category;for example, a variable is recorded as a 1 when it should be 0. In this context, this study aims to develop a statistical model to analyze telecommuting data which accounts for potential misclassification errors by building on existing literature in econometrics. The empirical analysis was undertaken using the 2017 National Household Travel Survey (NHTS) and the general extreme value (GEV) models available in the literature. Specifically, the frequency of telecommuting days was analyzed using the negative binomial (NB) model recast as the multinomial logit (MNL) model. By nature-and consistent with other studies-NHTS data are prone to errors that can be classified as intentional or unintentional misinformation provided by the person being interviewed. Ignoring these errors while modeling telecommuting frequencies using standard discrete count models can result in biased parameter estimates. The misclassification parameter was calculated for both over-reporting and under-reporting scenarios. The misclassification errors can be as high as 14% over-reported and 10% under-reported, particularly for the neighboring values. Statistical fit comparison between the models shows that models that ignore misclassification have worse data fit and biased parameter estimates with significant policy implications.
