The Retrieval of Social Network Data for Points-of-Interest in OpenStreetMap

OpenStreetMap is a volunteered geographic information system aimed at creating a free editable map of the world. One of the central elements of OpenStreetMap is the point-of-interest (POI). OpenStreetMap's contributors label POIs with information about them, including their name, type, address, etc. However, to use OpenStreetMap for touristic purposes, POIs should be annotated with useful information for visitors. Recently, our group developed XOSM, a query language and visualization tool for OpenStreetMap. This paper describes how to integrate social network queries into the XOSM query language. As a consequence of such integration, XOSM enables the definition and visualization of queries in which social network data are retrieved for POIs. XOSM social network queries serve to analyze the characteristics and relevance of POIs by visualizing Twitter and YouTube data. XOSM APIs have been built on top of the social network APIs to map XOSM POIs to social network data. To obtain better accuracy and reduce noise in the matching of OpenStreetMap POIs and social network data, some improvements are proposed. In particular, this paper suggests restricting the search space of the APIs by using the city name and the type of POI and then filtering the results of the APIs using the Levenshtein distance, examines the advantages of such improvements, and provides benchmarks that validate the proposal.

A set-oriented method definition language for object databases and its semantics

In this paper we propose a set-oriented rule-based method definition language for object-oriented databases. Most existing object-oriented database systems exploit a general-purpose imperative object-oriented programming language as the method definition language. Because methods are written in a general-purpose imperative language, it is difficult to analyze their properties and to optimize them. Optimization is important when dealing with a large amount of objects as in databases. We therefore believe that the use of an ad hoc, set-oriented language can offer some advantages, at least at the specification level. In particular, such a language can offer an appropriate framework to reason about method properties. In this paper, besides defining a set-oriented rule-based language for method definition, we formally define its semantics, addressing the problems of inconsistency and non-determinism in set-oriented updates. Moreover, we characterize some relevant properties of methods, such as conflicts among method specifications in sibling classes and behavioral refinement in subclasses. View operations on objects with roles for a statically typed database language

To deal with the evolution of data and applications and with the existence of multiple views for the same data, the object data model needs to be extended with two different sets of operations: object extension operations, to allow an object to dynamically change its type, and object viewing operations, to allow an object to be seen as if it had a different structure. Object extension and object viewing operations are related in that they are both identity-preserving operations, but different in that object extension may modify the behavior of the original object while object viewing creates a new view for the original object without modifying its behavior. In this paper, a set of object viewing operations is defined in the context of a statically and strongly typed database programming language which supports objects with roles, and the relationships with object extension and role mechanisms are discussed. We then show how the object viewing operations can be used to give the semantics of a higher level mechanism to define views for object databases. Examples of the use of these operations are given with reference to the prototype implementation of the language Galileo 97.

Extending a deductive object-oriented database system with spatial data handling facilities

This paper describes the integration of a spatial data-handling component with the ROCK & ROLL deductive object-oriented database system. The extended ROCK & ROLL system provides much more comprehensive and better integrated database programming facilities than other candidate platforms for spatial information systems. The extended system serves developers with an intuitive, expressive, formally defined collection of spatial data types as primitive types whose operations have state-of-the-art computational complexity. The integration of these types with the object-oriented modelling, imperative programming and deductive querying facilities of ROCK & ROLL makes available a comprehensive and integrated suite of complementary mechanisms for the development of spatial information systems. The paper also provides preliminary benchmark results which indicate that kernel-support for spatial data handling does yield performance gains and that the extended ROCK & ROLL system compares well with a specialist geographic information system and two widely known extensible database systems when the latter are extended with spatial data handling facilities. Algebraic query optimisation for database programming languages

A major challenge still facing the designers and implementors of database programming languages (DBPLs) is that of query optimisation. We investigate algebraic query optimisation techniques for DBPLs in the context of a purely declarative functional language that supports sets as first-class objects. Since the language is computationally complete issues such as non-termination of expressions and construction of infinite data structures can be investigated, whilst its declarative nature allows the issue of side effects to be avoided and a richer set of equivalences to be developed. The language has a well-defined semantics which permits us to reason formally about the properties of expressions, such as their equivalence with other expressions and their termination. The support of a set bulk data type enables much prior work on the optimisation of relational languages to be utilised. In the paper we first give the syntax of our archetypal DBPL and briefly discuss its semantics. We then define a small but powerful algebra of operators over the set data type, provide some key equivalences for expressions in these operators, and list transformation principles for optimising expressions. Along the way, we identify some caveats to well-known equivalences for non-deductive database languages. We next extend our language with two higher level constructs commonly found in functional DBPLs: set comprehensions and functions with known inverses. Some key equivalences for these constructs are provided, as are transformation principles for expressions in them. Finally, we investigate extending our equivalences for the set operators to the analogous operators over bags. Although developed and formally proved in the context of a functional language, our findings are directly applicable to other DBPLs of similar expressiveness. © Springer-Verlag 1996.

Complex applications in domains such as decision support systems and real time systems require a functionality that is achieved by combining the active and temporal database technologies. In this paper we present TALE, a Temporal Active Language and Execution model. TALE is a temporal active database programming language, combined with an execution model that enables a correct and efficient processing of operations. As such, TALE is a step in accommodating software engineering challenges in modern information systems. TALE primitives are presented using examples and an EBNF. The run-time control mechanism of the model is introduced and TALE properties, namely active and temporal capabilities, and reflective programming capabilities are discussed.

G-LOG - A GRAPH-BASED QUERY LANGUAGE

In this paper we introduce G-Log, a declarative query language based on graphs, which combines the expressive power of logic, the modeling power of complex objects with identity and the representation power of graphs. G-Log is a nondeterministic complete query language, and thus allows the expression of a large variety of queries. We compare G-Log to well-known deductive database languages, and find that it is the only nondeterministic and computationally complete language that does not suffer from the copy-elimination problem. G-Log may be used in a totally declarative way, as well as in a ''more procedural'' way. Thus, it provides an intuitive, flexible graph-based formalism for nonexpert database users.

Fibonacci is an object-oriented database programming language characterized by static and strong typing, and by new mechanisms for modeling data-bases in terms of objects with roles, classes, and associations. A brief introduction to the language is provided to present those features, which are particularly suited to modeling complex databases. Examples of the use of Fibonacci are given with reference to the prototype implementation of the language. © 1995 VLDB Endowment.

This article presents a database programming language, Thémis, which supports subtyping and class hierarchies, and allows for the definition of integrity constraints in a global and declarative way. We first describe the salient features of the language: types, names, classes, integrity constraints (including methods), and transactions. The inclusion of methods into integrity constraints allows an increase of the declarative power of these constraints. Indeed, the information needed to define a constraint is not always stored in the database through attributes, but is sometimes computed or derived data. Then, we address the problem of efficiently checking constraints. More specifically, we consider two different problems: (1) statically reducing the number of constraints to be checked, and (2) generating an efficient run-time checker. Using simple strategies, one can significantly improve the efficiency of the verification. We show how to reduce the number of constraints to be checked by characterizing the portions of the database that are involved in both the constraints and in a transaction. We also show how to generate efficient algorithms for checking a large class of constraints. We show how all the techniques presented exploit the underlying type system, which provides significant help in solving (1) and (2). Last, the current status of the Thémis prototype is presented. © 1995 VLDB Endowment.

Persistent Application Systems (PASs) are of increasing social and economic importance. They have the potential to be long-lived, concurrently accessed, and consist of large bodies of data and programs. Typical examples of PASs are CAD/CAM systems, office automation, CASE tools, software engineering environments, and patient-care support systems in hospitals. Orthogonally persistent object systems are intended to provide improved support for the design, construction, maintenance, and operation of PASs. Persistence abstraction allows the creation and manipulation of data in a manner, that is independent of its lifetime, thereby integrating the database view of information with the programming language view. This yields a number of advantages in terms of orthogonal design and programmer productivity which are beneficial for PASs. Design principles have been proposed for persistent systems. By following these principles, languages that provide persistence as a basic abstraction have been developed. In this paper, the motivation for orthogonal persistence is reviewed along with the above mentioned design principles. The concepts for integrating programming languages and databases through the persistence abstraction, and their benefits, are given. The technology to support persistence, the achievements, and future directions of persistence research are then discussed. © 1995 VLDB Endowment.
