In recent years, Ethernet passive optical network (EPON) has been considered as a promising candidate of mobile front-haul networks, since it can provide high capacity for bandwidth-hungry enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB) traffic. However, the EPON cannot support ultra-reliable and low latency communication (uRLLC) traffic, which is sporadic, highly unpredictable, and delay-sensitive. To address this problem, this paper devises a hybrid dynamic bandwidth allocation (dba) algorithm, which treats the uRLLC traffic as high-priority traffic. In particular, the hybrid dba algorithm schedules the uRLLC traffic in a competitive manner every other fixed time interval and polls the eMBB traffic in a round-robin manner. Our simulation results show that the hybrid dba algorithm can work very well in the network with 16 ONUs.

The main problem of the deployment of long reach passive optical network (LR-PON) is that it suffers from larger propagation delay. Multi-thread polling (MTP) based dynamic bandwidth allocation (dba) algorithm is one of the solutions to mitigate the larger propagation delay in the LR-PON system. However, in the conventional online MTP based dba scheme, over-granting problem is severe. In this paper, we propose a new online MTP based dba algorithm namely slotted MTP (S-MTP) scheme, where each time cycle is divided into multiple grant scheduling slots and, in each slot, multiple request and grant messages are processed simultaneously including the use of frame by frame information in both the request and grant messages. The proposed S-MTP scheme effectively reduces the end-to-end packet delay and over-granting problem in the LR-PON system with lower computational complexity. We have evaluated the performances of the proposed scheme by numerical simulations. The simulation results show that the proposed scheme provides 45% and 20% lower end-to-end packet delay with 38% and 10% lower over-granting rate than the conventional online MTP and enhanced interleaved polling with adaptive cycle time schemes, respectively. The S-MTP scheme also provides higher throughput and bandwidth utilization than those of the existing schemes.

Dynamic hybrid slot-size bandwidth allocation algorithm for reducing packet delay and jitter variation of real time traffic in EPON

In the modern data networks, the demand is increasing for interruption free, high speed, and best quality of services to perform successful communications. This paper emphasizes on the high priority (HP) traffic like video conferencing, video streaming, telemedicine, teleconferencing, and interactive gaming for the real time communications. To achieve the best quality data communication for the HP traffic, in this paper, we propose a new dynamic bandwidth allocation (dba) algorithm called dynamic hybrid slot-size bandwidth allocation (DHSSBA) algorithm, which is the modified version of existing hybrid slot-size/rate (HSSR) algorithm. The performance of the proposed scheme has been analyzed by using numerical simulations in terms of the end-to-end packet delay, absolute delay variation, jitter, and throughput for both the HP and best effort (BE) traffic. We have also compared the simulation results of the proposed scheme with those of the existing modified HSSR (MHSSR), delay variation guaranteed protocol (DVGP), and HSSR schemes. From the comparison of the simulation results, at the highest offered load of 1.0, it can be seen that for the HP traffic the proposed scheme provides 60%, 50%, and 20% less average end-to-end delay than the existing HSSR, DVGP, and MHSSR schemes, respectively. At the highest offered load of 1.0, the proposed scheme also provides about 35% higher throughput than both the HSSR and DVGP schemes with 45% and 35% less jitter variation than the HSSR and DVGP schemes, respectively.

A passive optical network (PON) with multiple optical line terminals (OLTs) will play an important role in the optical access network. In this study, a novel dynamic bandwidth allocation (dba) algorithm for the downstream channel in a multi-OLT PON is proposed. To take care of bandwidth demands of different users, weight factors are introduced. Based on different weight factors, a core framework of the algorithm is constructed. Moreover, by combining a decision criterion and a bandwidth surplus ratio, a mathematical model of release bandwidth is established. Furthermore, by uniting judgement conditions and overload amount, a mathematical model of allocation bandwidth is also built. By constructing two mathematical models, the order and amount of release and allocation bandwidth are effectively solved. Moreover, to describe accurately the power of bandwidth transfer, a new concept bandwidth-transfer work' is introduced. Based on the bandwidth-transfer work, a ranking model is created to maximise the efficiency of the dba. Finally, the effectiveness of the dba algorithm and ranking model is demonstrated by the simulation and analysis.

Energy-efficiency and green communications have become dominant topics related to access network implementation, since their energy consumption is a major contributor of energy consumption within the Internet. In this paper we analyze an implementation of anew energy-efficient dynamic bandwidth algorithm in afour-channel Wavelength Division Multiplexing Ethernet Passive Optical Network(WDM EPON), in which wavelength assignments take place per service class and not per Optical Network Unit(ONU). The improved Dynamic Bandwidth Allocation (dba) algorithm introduces independent bandwidth allocation for each wavelength, which results in efficient bandwidth management and utilization. The mathematical model for new dba algorithm is described, as are changes to the Multi-Point Control Protocol(MPCP), necessary for its implementation. The obtained results show thatthe redefined dba algorithm improves Key Performance Indicators(KPIs) and as a consequently enables delivery of enhanced services to end-users. Significant energy savings are achieved without Quality of Service (QoS) degradation, and without network or equipment architecture changes.

Open access network (OAN) is an efficient converged network that can effectively connects several service providers in a ubiquitous city (u-City). Passive optical network (PON) provides enough bandwidth to support huge data traffic of the modern OAN of u-City. However, some service providers in the u-City contain high priority (HP) traffic while other service providers comprise low priority traffic, i.e., best efforts (BE) traffic. This HP traffic means the real time traffic, e.g., voice over internet protocol (VoIP), IPTV, video on demand (VoD), video conferencing etc. The conventional polling algorithms of the PON cannot provide differentiated service for data traffic of different priority groups. These polling algorithms also require almost same back off delay for both the HP and BE data traffic. So the PON-based OAN with the conventional polling algorithms are not enough to provide the real time service for the HP traffic. In this paper, we propose a new multi-threaded dynamic bandwidth allocation (dba) algorithm for the PON-based OAN that provides lower delay for the HP traffic by reducing the back off delay in every polling cycle. The proposed algorithm is called thread guaranteed bandwidth allocation (TGBA) algorithm. Performance of the proposed TGBA algorithm is evaluated by numerical simulations in terms of end-to-end packet delay and pre-transmission delay. The proposed scheme provides lower end-to-end and pre-transmission delays for the HP traffic than those of the conventional single-threaded and multi-threaded dba schemes.

In the modern data networks, users are communicating via real time traffic, i. e., high priority (HP) traffic, very often. The demand is increasing for interruption free, high speed, high efficiency, and best quality of services to perform successful communications. This thesis emphasizes on the HP traffic like video conferencing, video chat, telemedicine, teleconferencing, and interactive gaming for the real time communication. In contrast, the low priority data is considered as the best effort (BE) traffic because the BE traffic do not require delay sensitive applications. To achieve better quality data communication for the HP traffic, Ethernet passive optical network (EPON) is used to fulfill the bandwidth demand of such real time traffic. The effectiveness of EPON mostly depends on dynamic bandwidth allocation (dba) algorithm. In this thesis, we propose a new dba algorithm called dynamic hybrid-slot-size bandwidth allocation (DHSSBA) algorithm. To ensure better performance, the proposed DHSSBA is also incorporated with the new multi-point control protocol (MPCP). As the DHSSBA scheme uses two Gate messages, one Gate message for the HP traffic and other one for the BE traffic, for each optical network unit (ONU) in a time cycle, the proposed MPCP protocol eliminates the synchronization problem between the two Gate messages. The performances of the proposed scheme are also compared with the existing hybrid-slot-size/rate (HSSR) scheme and delay variation guaranteed polling (DVGP) scheme. The performance of the proposed scheme has been analyzed by using numerical simulation in terms of the end to end packet delay, jitter variation and throughput for both the HP and BE traffic. From the comparison of the simulation results it is clear that the proposed scheme provides lesser end to end packet delay for the HP traffic and provides better performances than those of the HSSR and DVGP schemes.

A passive optical network (PON) combines multiple service providers' in a ubiquitous city (u-City) without suffering from a bandwidth bottleneck. Multiple optical line terminals (multi-OLT) PON-based hybrid network effectively reduces the computational complexity of data packet processing of multiple service providers having different packet lengths and data rates. However, in the future u-Cities huge number of service providers, e.g., fiber to the home, wireless sensor network, femto networks, and video on demand, will be installed to provide several services. In this regards, only addition of multiple OLTs for multiple service providers are not enough to get the optimum performance from this hybrid network. In this paper, we propose a new dynamic bandwidth allocation (dba) algorithm for improving the bandwidth sharing efficiency and reducing the time jitter in the upstream channel. Performance of this new dba algorithm also analyzes for a multi-OLT PON-based hybrid networks where a group of service providers will be connected to an optical network unit (ONU) with individual uplink wavelengths. In contrast, the other groups of service providers will be connected to the other ONUs with different wavelengths and every ONU will be shared by the multiple service providers. In the central office, multiple OLTs will handle the data packets of the multiple service providers. In the proposed dba algorithm, all the service providers have been divided into two groups on the basis of the maximum packet length of each service provider while all the ONUs are also divided into two groups, i.e., heavily and lightly loaded ONUs, depending on the accumulated data traffics. The simulation results show that the proposed scheme provides less end to end delay and jitter with higher throughput than the conventional PON-based hybrid networks with the limited service (LS) dba algorithm. Preserving the privacy of biometric data becomes a critical work. To increase the privacy of the biometric data, novel method is proposed. In this proposed method, two different biometric data such as features from fingerprint and face are combined. In the face, the features like eyes, lips and brow are extracted. In the fingerprint, orientation feature is extracted. The database contains the training images. The ELM classifier is used to combine these features and matches with the training image.

A passive optical network (PON) is a highly capable access network that effectively converges several service providers, without suffering from any bandwidth deficiency. However, a PON consisting of a single optical line terminal (OLT) for multiple service providers increases the computational complexity for data packet processing in the OLT, resulting in a longer time delay and more packet loss. A multi-OLT PON-based access network is an effective solution for reducing the computational complexity of data packet processing in a hybrid network of multiple service providers. The most important issue concerning the multi-OLT PON is the sharing efficiency of upstream channels among multiple service providers having different packet lengths and data rates. In this paper, we propose a dynamic bandwidth allocation algorithm called adaptive limited dynamic bandwidth allocation for multi-OLT PON (ALdbaM). The proposed scheme is a modified version of adaptive limited dynamic bandwidth allocation (ALdba) algorithms that we proposed before, where both the ALdba1 and ALdba2 schemes are combined with proper guard time management and a modified multipoint control protocol. The simulation results show that the ALdbaM scheme provides lower packet delay with higher bandwidth utilization, higher upstream efficiency, and higher throughput than the conventional ALdba1 and ALdba2 schemes.
