Improved parallelization techniques for the density matrix renormalization group

A distributed-memory parallelization strategy for the density matrix renormalization group is proposed for cases where correlation functions are required. This new strategy has substantial improvements with respect to previous works. A scalability analysis shows an overall serial fraction of 9.4% and an efficiency of around 60% considering up to eight nodes. Sources of possible parallel slowdown are pointed out and solutions to circumvent these issues are brought forward in order to achieve a better performance. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. Lightweight distributed computing framework for orchestrating high performance computing and big data

In recent years, the need for the ability to work remotely and subsequently the need for the availability of remote computer-based systems has increased substantially. This trend has seen a dramatic increase with the onset of the 2020 pandemic. Often local data is produced, stored, and processed in the cloud to remedy this flood of computation and storage needs. Historically, HPC (high performance computing) and the concept of big data have been utilized for the storage and processing of large data. However, both HPC and Hadoop can be utilized as solutions for analytical work, though the differences between these may not be obvious. Both use parallel processing techniques and offer options for data to be stored in either a centralized or distributed manner. Recent studies have focused on using a hybrid approach with both technologies. Therefore, the convergence between HPC and big data technologies can be filled with distributed computing machines at the layer described. This paper results from the motivation that there exists a necessity for a distributed computing framework that can scale from SOC (system on chip) boards to desktop computers and servers. For this purpose, in this article, we propose a distributed computing environment that can scale up to devices with heterogeneous architecture, where devices can set up clusters with resource-limited nodes and then run on top of. The solution can be thought of as a minimalist hybrid approach between HPC and big data. Within the scope of this study, not only the design of the proposed system is detailed, but also critical modules and subsystems are implemented as proof of concept.

Bringing network effects to pervasive spaces

We developed the Obje interoperability framework, a middleware technology that lets networked applications and services coordinate with each another-even when they know almost nothing about one other. We've implemented the current version of the Obje framework (version 4) in Java. It supports both Java and native mobile code and can be implemented in a variety of languages and platforms. It also runs on several platforms, including Windows, Mac OS X, Linux, and Windows PocketPC. Leveraging the Obje framework, we have been able to return to our focus of developing pervasive spaces to explore the human experience of pervasive computing.

Java 2 Enterprise Edition has excelled at standardizing many important middleware concepts. For example, J2EE provides a standard interface for distributed transaction management, directory services, and messaging. In addition, Java 2 Standard Edition (J2SE), which underpins J2EE, provides a largely successful standard for Java interaction with relational databases. However, the platform has failed to deliver a satisfactory application programming model. Many in the open source community, especially smaller vendors, have chosen the alternative of developing frameworks designed to simplify the experience of building J2EE applications. Popular frameworks such as Struts, Hibernate, and the Spring Framework play an important role in many of today's J2EE development projects.

The distributed termination problem involves determining the instant at which a distributed computation, which is accessed in common by a number of processes within a network, can be terminated. Each process can only determine when its own local termination conditions have been met; an algorithm is required to detect when local termination conditions have been met by all processes. The present paper develops an efficient synchronized distributed termination algorithm that does not require prior knowledge of network configuration or number of processes. The network is assumed to be strongly connected with no central controller. Unidirectional channels connect distributed processes. Once all processes have satisfied local termination conditions, distributed computation termination will require a number of steps proportional to the network diameter.

A logic for a coordination model with multiple spaces

This paper introduces and studies PoliS, a coordination model to specify the software architecture of distributed applications. PoliS is based an multiple dataspaces containing both data and programs. We define PoliS syntax and semantics, and show how it can be used as a formal notation for specifying open systems. We adopt TLA logic to reason on PoliS specifications. Finally, we discuss an application field for PoliS, namely we use it to specify and reason on software architectures of some simple distributed systems. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. Similarity joins are recognized to be among the most used data processing and analysis operations. We introduce a C++-based high-level parallel pattern implemented on top of FastFlow Building Blocks to provide the programmer with ready-to-use similarity join computations. The SimilarityJoin pattern is implemented according to the MapReduce paradigm enriched with locality sensitive hashing (LSH) to optimize the whole computation. The new parallel pattern can be used with any C++ serializable data structure and executed on shared- and distributed-memory machines. We present experimental validations of the proposed solution considering two different clusters and small and large input datasets to evaluate in-core and out-of-core executions. The performance assessment of the SimilarityJoin pattern has been conducted by comparing the execution time against the one obtained from the original hand-tuned Hadoop-based implementation of the LSH-based similarity join algorithms as well as a Spark-based version. The experiments show that the SimilarityJoin pattern: (1) offers a significant performance improvement for small and medium datasets;(2) is competitive also for computations using large input datasets producing out-of-core executions.

A software engineering approach for the development of heterogeneous robotic applications

One of the most evident characteristics of robotic applications is heterogeneity: large robotic projects involve many different researchers with very different programming needs and areas of research, using a variety of hardware and software that must be integrated efficiently (i.e.: with a low development cost) to construct applications that satisfy not only classic robotic requirements (fault-tolerance, real-time specifications, intensive access to hardware, etc.) but also software engineering aspects (reusability, maintainability, etc.). Most existing solutions to this problem either do not deal with such heterogeneit, or do not cover specific robotic needs. In this paper we propose a framework for the integration of heterogeneous robotic software through a software engineering approach: the BABEL development system, which is aimed to cover the main phases of the application lifecycle (design, implementation, testing, and maintainance) when unavoidable heterogeneity conditions are present. The capabilities of our system are shown by its support for designing and implementing diverse real robotic applications that use several programming languages (C, C+ +, JAVA), execution platforms (RT-operating systems, MS-Windows, no operating system at all), communication middleware (CORBA, TCP/IP, USB), and also a variety of hardware components (Personal Computers, microcontrollers, and a wide diversity of sensor and actuator devices in mobile robots and manipulator arms).
