distributed computing provides a cost-effective solution for computation intensive problems. With the emerging of networking operating system for personal computer (PC), such as WindowsNT, it is now feasible to develop distributed computing on a network of PCs. In addition, the computing power delivered by a PC is kept increasing whilst the cost is decreasing. Implying that the performance/cost factor for a PC is high and tile computing power delivered by the network is enormous. In this paper, we describe a software system which enables users to develop distributed computing program using the SPMD (Single Program Multiple Data) paradigm very quickly under the WindowsNT operating system. The programming model for the system is simple and a user can control the system through a graphical interface. The results show that our system provides a reasonable speedup in solving Image processing problems.

Imperative session types provide an imperative interface to session-typed communication in a functional language. Compared to functional session type APIs, the program structure is simpler at the surface, but typestate is required to model the current state of communication throughout. Most work on session types has neglected the imperative approach. We demonstrate that the functional approach subsumes previous work on imperative session types by exhibiting a typing and semantics preserving translation into a system of linear functional session types. We further show that the untyped backwards translation from the functional to the imperative calculus is semantics preserving. We restrict the type system of the functional calculus such that the backwards translation becomes type preserving. Thus, we precisely capture the difference in expressiveness of the two calculi and conclude that the lack of expressiveness in the imperative calculus is solely due to its type system.

The aim of this project is to develop an application which allows the user to automatize solving problems based on differential equations. The user of the application which was created especially for this thesis should have the possibility of defining equations by the graphical block diagramming interface. The application includes two different kinds of solving methods: local and distributed one. In these two cases every part of solving algorithm (which can work independently) is parallelized. The FEMM program was included in the solver module as an external one. A modification of FEMM program source has been done. Thus, the new LUA language features (shared memory and sockets communication commands) have been added.

Efficient control of urban traffic requires the implementation of a sufficiently accurate model allowing prediction of the effects of various control actions (such as adaptation of red-green phases at different intersections). Given the size of the plant it is important that one can use a distributed implementation of this simulation model. The computational efficiency is also improved by using a heterogeneous model, where some parts of the network are represented by a macroscopic model, other parts by a microscopic model. Long road sections with fairly homogeneous traffic conditions are represented by time driven macroscopic models describing the evolution over time of flow, speed and density of vehicles in different locations. In other parts of the plant it is more efficient to use event driven microscopic models representing the times at which individual cars cross certain boundaries. This is the case for short sections of road and for intersections. This paper presents a Java implementation of such a modular distributed simulator for a large system built up from many interacting components of long road segments, short road segments, and intersections, together with the boundary conditions at the edges of the plant. Each component represents some randomness in the evolution of the plant. We also discuss how to connect time driven and event driven components to each other in a computationally efficient way.

On a distributed implementation of a decomposition method for multistage linear stochastic programs

Implementation of a parallel decomposition method for solving linear multistage stochastic proarammina problems in Sun Network is described. The problem is decomposed into a system of subproblems connected in a tree-like structure. The subproblems can execute independently in parallel generating proposals for their predecessors and some backward information for their successors. Information is exchanged asynchronously through special buffers. This is the first truly parallel implementation of the method which was previously tested in multitasking environment. It is shown how the environment for parallel, distributed computations is constructed from the standard tools available in Sun Network and Unix operating system. Issues of communication, distribution of code and distributed semaphores are discussed. The main concepts of implementation are described in detail. The subproblems and the buffers are implemented as Unix processes performing their tasks on the client-server basis. The buffers are the servers of exchanged information and subproblems may access this information making requests to the server. Numerical tests were performed which show that the method allows substantial reduction of the solution time. The tradeoffs between decomposition and aggregation of the problem are discussed and some alternative methods of allocation of tasks to machines are compared.

This paper deals with a well-known problem, the learning of distributed programming languages, especially when they are included in distance programs. In particular, the course is focused on middleware learning in a master program, in which students that access to it have heterogeneous programming level and skills. Therefore, a real scenario and a real case study are presented, where students must rationalize their effort. An emphasis is placed on those students that offer more weaknesses. Moreover, this paper presents the students evaluation process, and summarizes the results obtained after the course had been developed.

Collaborative online encyclopedias such as Wikipedia and PlanetMath are becoming increasingly popular. In order to understand an article in a corpus a user must understand the related and underlying concepts through linked articles. In this paper, we introduce NNexus, a generalization of the automatic linking component of *** and the first system that automates the process of linking encyclopedia entries into a semantic network of concepts. We discuss the challenges, present the conceptual models as well as specific mechanisms of NNexus system, and discuss some of our ongoing and completed works.

CUDA-For-Clusters: A System for Efficient Execution of CUDA Kernels on Multi-core Clusters

Rapid advancements in multi-core processor architectures coupled with low-cost, low-latency, high-bandwidth interconnects have made clusters of multi-core machines a common computing resource. Unfortunately, writing good parallel programs that efficiently utilize all the resources in such a cluster is still a major challenge. Various programming languages have been proposed as a solution to this problem, but are yet to be adopted widely to run performance-critical code mainly due to the relatively immature software framework and the effort involved in re-writing existing code in the new language. In this paper, we motivate and describe our initial study in exploring CUDA as a programming language for a cluster of multi-cores. We develop CUDA-For-Clusters (CFC), a framework that transparently orchestrates execution of CUDA kernels on a cluster of multi-core machines. The well-structured nature of a CUDA kernel, the growing popularity, support and stability of the CUDA software stack collectively make CUDA a good candidate to be considered as a programming language for a cluster. CFC uses a mixture of source-to-source compiler transformations, a work distribution run-time and a light-weight software distributed shared memory to manage parallel executions. Initial results on running several standard CUDA benchmark programs achieve impressive speedups of up to 7.5X on a cluster with 8 nodes, thereby opening up an interesting direction of research for further investigation.

The ALMA Common Software (ACS), provides the infrastructure of the distributed software system of ALMA and other projects. ACS, built on top of CORBA and Data Distribution Service (DDS) middleware, is based on a Component-Container paradigm and hides the complexity of the middleware allowing the developer to focus on domain specific issues. The transition of the ALMA observatory from construction to operations brings with it that ACS effort focuses primarily on scalability, stability and robustness rather than on new features. The transition came together with a shorter release cycle and a more extensive testing. For scalability, the most problematic area has been the CORBA notification service, used to implement the publisher subscriber pattern because of the asynchronous nature of the paradigm: a lot of effort has been spent to improve its stability and recovery from run time errors. The original bulk data mechanism, implemented using the CORBA Audio/Video Streaming Service, showed its limitations and has been replaced with a more performant and scalable DDS implementation. Operational needs showed soon the difference between releases cycles for Online software (i.e. used during observations) and Offline software, which requires much more frequent releases. This paper attempts to describe the impact the transition from construction to operations had on ACS, the solution adopted so far and a look into future evolution.

The paper introduces a visual programming language and corresponding web- and cloud-based development environment called NetsBlox. NetsBlox is an extension of Snap! and it builds upon its visual formalism as well as its open source code base. NetsBlox adds distributed programming capabilities to Snap! by introducing two simple abstractions: messages and NetsBlox services. Messages containing data can be exchanged by two or more NetsBlox programs running on different computers connected to the Internet. Services are called on a client program and are executed on the NetsBlox server. These two abstractions make it possible to create distributed programs, for example multi-player games or client-server applications. We believe that NetsBlox provides increased motivation to high-school students to become creators and not just consumers of technology. At the same time, it helps teach them basic distributed programming concepts.
