The paper introduces a visual programming language and corresponding web- and cloud-based development environment called NetsBlox. NetsBlox is an extension of Snap! and it builds upon its visual formalism as well as its open source code base. NetsBlox adds distributed programming capabilities to Snap! by introducing two simple abstractions: messages and NetsBlox services. Messages containing data can be exchanged by two or more NetsBlox programs running on different computers connected to the Internet. Services are called on a client program and are executed on the NetsBlox server. These two abstractions make it possible to create distributed programs, for example multi-player games or client-server applications. We believe that NetsBlox provides increased motivation to high-school students to become creators and not just consumers of technology. At the same time, it helps teach them basic distributed programming concepts.

Multiparty session types (MPST) provide a typing discipline for message passing concurrency, ensuring deadlock freedom for distributed processes. This paper first summarises the relationship between MPST and communicating finite state machines (CFSMs), which offers not only theoretical justifications of MPST but also a guidance to implement MPST in practice. As one of the applications, we present vSCR (NuScR), an extensible toolchain for MPST-based multiparty protocols. The toolchain can convert multiparty protocols in the SCRIBBLE protocol description language into global types in the MPST theory;global types are projected into local types, and local types are converted to their corresponding CFSMs. The toolchain also generates APIs from CFSMs that implement endpoints in the protocol. Our design allows for language-independent code generation, and opens possibilities to generate APIs in various programming languages. We design our toolchain with modularity and extensibility in mind, so that extensions of core MPST can be easily integrated within our framework. As a case study, we show the implementation of the nested protocol extension in vScR, to showcase our extensibility.

The lack of face-to-face interaction in distributed Software Development (DSD) projects is a great obstacle for informal communication, which is the way in which we normally discover more about the co-workers along with building trust. Since we are attempting to reinforce the team spirit and improve trust between co-workers, we have analyzed what information software engineers consider to be important to know about their virtual colleagues. In this paper we describe the preliminary results obtained from this study and outline the features of a tool, called Trusting Social Network, with which to support DSD and help stakeholders to know each other better. © 2010 IEEE.

Data-intensive applications are increasingly designed to execute on large computing clusters. Grouped aggregation is a core primitive of many distributed programming models, and it is often the most efficient available mechanism for computations such as matrix multiplication and graph traversal. Such algorithms typically require non-standard aggregations that are more sophisticated than traditional built-in database functions such as Sum and Max. As a result, the ease of programming user-defined aggregations, and the efficiency of their implementation, is of great current interest. This paper evaluates the interfaces and implementations for user-defined aggregation in several state of the art distributed computing systems: Hadoop, databases such as Oracle Parallel Server, and DryadLINQ. We show that: the degree of language integration between user-defined functions and the high-level query language has an impact on code legibility and simplicity;the choice of programming interface has a material effect on the performance of computations;some execution plans perform better than others on average;and that in order to get good performance on a variety of workloads a system must be able to select between execution plans depending on the computation. The interface and execution plan described in the Map Reduce paper, and implemented by Hadoop, are found to be among the worst-performing choices.

The complexity of implementing scalable data processing tasks in parallel and distributed computing environments has pushed the adoption of restricted programming models that simplify expressing such tasks. In this context, the dataflow model has emerged as the standard for building distributed data processing systems. The key insight of this model is to express computations as sequences of operations that do not share any state and can thus be deployed and executed independently on the same or on different machines. however entirely excluding state sharing may be detrimental for performance, as it prevents operations executed on the same machine from accessing common resources. The effects of these limitations become more and more evident as the computational and memory resources of individual hosts increase, and even large-scale data analysis tasks can be performed with few well-equipped machines. Moving from this observation, in this paper we present an extension to the classic dataflow model that enables disciplined state sharing across operators to improve performance. We implement the model in Renoir, a dataflow system written in Rust, and we exploit the characteristics of this programming language to ensure sate access to shared state by design. We present several use cases where our model may be beneficial, and we use them to evaluate the proposed model in terms of performance and code complexity. We show that our model empowers developers to better exploit the resources of machines, resulting in substantial performance improvements in several use cases. Programs written with our extended model may even be more concise and simpler than in the classic dataflow model.

distributed systems address the increasing demand for fast access to resources and fault tolerance for data. However, due to scalability requirements, software developers need to trade consistency for performance. For certain data, consistency guarantees may be weakened if application correctness is unaffected. In contrast, data flow from data with weak consistency to data with strong consistency requirements is problematic, since application correctness may be broken. In this paper, we propose LCD, a higher-order static consistency-typed language with replicated data types. The type system of LCD statically enforces noninterference between data types with weak consistency and data types with strong consistency. This means that updates of weakly-consistent data can never affect strongly-consistent data. Finally, our main theorem guarantees sequential consistency for so-called con operations in our language.

The main telescope of the UC Observatory Santa Martina is a 50cm optical telescope donated by ESO to Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile. During the past years the telescope has been refurbished and used as the main facility for testing and validating new instruments under construction by the center of Astro-Engineering UC. As part of this work, the need to develop a more efficient and flexible control system arises. The new distributed control system has been developed on top of Internet Communication Engine (ICE), a framework developed by Zeroc Inc. This framework features a lightweight but powerful and flexible inter-process communication infrastructure and provides binding to classic and modern programming languages, such as, C/C++, java, c#, ruby-rail, objective c, etc. The result of this work shows ICE as a real alternative for CORBA and other de-facto distribute programming framework. Classical control software architecture has been chosen and comprises an observation control system (OCS), the orchestrator of the observation, which controls the telescope control system (TCS), and detector control system (DCS). The real-time control and monitoring system is deployed and running over ARM based single board computers. Other features such as logging and configuration services have been developed as well. Inter-operation with other main astronomical control frameworks are foreseen in order achieve a smooth integration of instruments when they will be integrated in the main observatories in the north of Chile

distributed algorithms are regularly used to deploy distributed paradigms in smart grids. Computations are executed without any centralized server even in a limited bandwidth network. However, there are still some drawbacks in the proof of convergence as well as a lack of programming abstraction. In this paper, we propose a new approach to the distributed paradigm by using distributed programming in a data manipulation language called Smartlog. A distributed programming methodology will automatically divide a centralized Smartlog program into multiple rules while ensuring the correct transformation of the centralized computations. An application of voltage control in a distribution grid with high penetration of PV systems is used as an illustration of this approach. Two implementations are compared: centralized programming and distributed programming. Both are deployed in a real-time simulation with OPAL-RT and a network of Raspberry Pis. The response time of each implementation is analyzed to evaluate their respective performance, showing that the Smartlog language is particularly appropriate to smart grids in terms of compacity and simplicity.
