This paper introduces NetsBlox, a visual programming environment for learning distributed programming principles. Extending both the visual formalism and open source code base of Snap!, NetsBlox provides two accessible distributed programming abstractions to simplify the process of creating networked applications: message passing and Remote Procedure Calls (RPC). Messaging passing allows NetsBlox applications to send data to other connected NetsBlox clients. Remote Procedure Calls enable seamless integration of third party services, such as Google Maps, weather, traffic and other public domain data sources, into NetsBlox applications. Other RPCs help coordinating distributed clients which may be difficult for novice programmers allowing the user to more quickly create captivating and sophisticated applications. These abstractions empower users to develop networked programs, including multi-player games and client-server applications. By providing networking support, NetsBlox not only allows users to learn distribute programming concepts but also makes programming more engaging by incorporating diverse services available on the web.

NetsBlox is a new collaborative learning environment extending Snap! with a few carefully selected abstractions that enable students to create distributed applications. In today's interconnected world, it will become increasingly important to have a basic understanding of computer networking and distributed computation yet these topics are rarely covered in K-12 curricula. Conversely, NetsBlox makes distributed programming accessible to beginner programmers using its simple yet powerful visual programming primitives, an intuitive user interface and a sophisticated cloud-based infrastructure. Moreover, the tool enables students to work together on the same project from different computers similarly to how Google Docs operate. This feature enables online collaboration and facilitates new ways to teach and learn programming. By allowing students to create multi-player games, NetsBlox provides increased motivation and is likely to prove engaging to students. By providing access to online public domain data sources, such as weather, earthquake, and air pollution data, in a unified manner, students will be able to create interesting science projects in a number of STEM fields promoting interdisciplinary learning. This technology demonstration will introduce the environment and demonstrate its utility in creating multi-player games, such as Battleship and Tic Tac Toe, as well as highlight two client-server applications that display weather and historical earthquake data, respectively, on top of an interactive Google Maps background. Audience members will be asked to participate in a massively parallel volunteer computing application doing prime factorization of large numbers. The most successful systems for "big data" processing have all adopted functional APIs. We present a new programming model we call function passing designed to provide a more principled substrate on which to build data-centric distributed systems. A key idea is to build up a persistent functional data structure representing transformations on distributed immutable data by passing well-typed serializable functions over the wire and applying them to this distributed data. Thus, the function passing model can be thought of as a persistent functional data structure that is distributed, where transformations to data are stored in its nodes rather than the distributed data itself. The model simplifies failure recovery by design-in the event of a failure, data is recovered by replaying function applications atop immutable data loaded from stable storage. Deferred evaluation is also central to our model;by incorporating deferred evaluation into our design only at the point of initiating network communication, the function passing model remains easy to reason about while remaining efficient in time and memory. We formalize our programming model using small-step operational semantics, and we provide an open-source implementation of our model in and for the Scala programming language, along with a case study of several example frameworks and end-user programs written atop of this model.

distributed collective systems are systems formed by homogeneous dynamic collections of devices acting in a shared environment to pursue a joint task or goal. Typical applications emerge in the context of wireless sensor networks, robot swarms, groups of wearable -augmented people, and computing infrastructures. programming such systems is notoriously hard, due to requirements of scalability, concurrency, faults, and difficulty in making desired collective behaviour ultimately emerge: ad -hoc languages and mechanisms have been proposed threads like spatial computing, macro -programming, and field -based coordination. In this paper we present the eXchange Calculus (XC), formalising a tiny set of key mechanisms, usable across many different languages and platforms, allowing to express the overall interactive behaviour of distributed collective systems in a declarative way. In this approach, computation (executed in asynchronous rounds), communication (which is neighbour -based), and state over time, are all expressed by a single declarative construct, called exchange. We provide a formalisation of XC in terms of syntax, device -level and network -level semantics, prove a number of properties of the calculus, and discuss applicability considering a smart city scenario. XC is implemented as a DSL in Scala and in C++, with different trade-offs in terms of productivity and platform targetting.

Reengineering the SLEEP Simulator in a Concurrent and distributed programming Course

This article presents laboratory exercises and project assignments developed to teach concepts of concurrent and distributed programming in Java. The exercises and assignments cover important topics determined after an analysis of topics that are often taught in different universities. During the exercises, students reengineer the general purpose discrete event simulator named SLEEP (Simulation, Logic, Execution, prEsentation, Physics). A multilayer organization of the SLEEP simulator enables coverage of the important topics in a coherent manner. In order to support parallel execution in SLEEP students start to reengineer the simulator layers with an exercise related to concurrent programming, followed by two exercises related to distributed programming, and finish with an exercise related to grid computing. The exercises follow the principles of error management training and teach students what common errors are and how to overcome them. The article also describes a practical experience with the use of SLEEP on a concurrent and distributed programming course over a 3-year period. Edelweiss: Automatic Storage Reclamation for distributed programming

Event Log Exchange (ELE) is a common programming pattern based on immutable state and messaging. ELE sidesteps traditional challenges in distributed consistency, at the expense of introducing new challenges in designing space reclamation protocols to avoid consuming unbounded storage. We introduce Edelweiss, a sublanguage of Bloom that provides an ELE programming model, yet automatically reclaims space without programmer assistance. We describe techniques to analyze Edelweiss programs and automatically generate application-specific distributed space reclamation logic. We show how Edelweiss can be used to elegantly implement a variety of communication and distributed storage protocols;the storage reclamation code generated by Edelweiss effectively garbage-collects state and often matches hand-written protocols from the literature.

Quadratic optimization problems appear in several interesting estimation, learning and control tasks. To solve these problems in peer-to-peer networks it is necessary to design distributed optimization algorithms supporting directed, asynchronous and unreliable communication. This paper addresses this requirement by extending a promising distributed convex optimization algorithm, known as Newton-Raphson consensus, and originally designed for static and undirected communication. Specifically, we modify this algorithm so that it can cope with asynchronous, broadcast and unreliable lossy links, and prove that the optimization strategy correctly converge to the global optimum when the local cost functions are quadratic. We then support the intuition that this robustified algorithm converges to the true optimum also for general convex problems with dedicated numerical simulations.

This article presents experiences of teachers from Lulea University of Technology when enhancing the teaching approach and depth of an undergraduate course on network programming and distributed applications. During the trial run of the course in the fall of 2013 agent-oriented programming and cloud technologies were married to provide students an exciting practical scenario and capability to test the performance of truly large scale distributed systems under extremely high traffic loads.

We face a glut of languages for programming distributed software today. However, only a few languages have proven their potential with wider practical use in different domains of computing. We picked two such languages, meant for different domains, to see if they could cross-pollinate and enrich one another. Specifically, we chose SystemJ, a language to program distributed embedded systems, and IEC61499, the next generation standard for distributed industrial automation control software. Unsurprisingly, we found similar structures and artifacts between the two. We also found significant differences mainly due to differing domain-specific requirements. This comparison leads to observations and guidelines for improving both languages, and we discuss directions towards an "ideal" distributed software programming language.

The long-term vision of an Internet of Things (IoT) is approaching reality and leading hardware vendors expect shipment of 50 billion devices in the near future. Emerging Internet standards will enable this huge number of embedded machines to interconnect and cooperate-and raise the challenge of building suitable software environments that provide scalability, reliability, and security at an efficient level. In this paper, we introduce such an approach-a modified actor model and a corresponding runtime environment. In contrast to common tools, it offers a higher level of abstraction to design and program applications for constrained devices, while remaining efficient, reliable, and open to include the security extensions from the agenda of the IETF.
