The WITCH experiment is a medium-scale experimental set-up located at ISOLDE/CERN. It combines a double Penning trap system with,a retardation spectrometer for energy measurements of recoil ions from beta decay. For a correct operation of such a set-up a whole range of different devices is required. Along with the installation and optimization of the set-up a computer control system was developed to control these devices. The CS-Framework that is developed and maintained at GSI, was chosen as a basis for this control system as it is perfectly suited to handle the distributed nature of a control *** report here on the required hardware for WITCH, along with the basis of this CS-Framework and the add-ons that were implemented for WITCH. An autonomous blockchain-based workflow execution broker for e-science

Scientific workflows are essential for many applications, enabling the configuration and execution of complex tasks across distributed resources. In this paper, we contribute an Ethereum blockchain-based scientific workflow execution manager, which distributes workflows to run on cluster computing providers that utilize the Slurm workload manager to execute them. We extended our blockchain-based autonomous resource broker called eBlocBroker, which is a DAO-based decentralized coordinator, by providing distributed workflow execution via blockchain. Through various tests, we demonstrate how our eBlockBroker autonomous organization, which is programmed as a smart contract, can manage scientific workflow submission, scheduling, and execution on cluster computing providers. The utilization of blockchain for distributed workflow execution is a new concept. We are motivated because our system has been developed with e-Science in mind where scientific workflows are widely utilized.

One of the current challenges in tropical cyclone research is how to improve our understanding of TCs' interannual variability as well as climate change's impact. Modern advances in global modeling, visualization, and supercomputing technologies at NASA show potential, but scalability is an issue. Recent improvements to the multiscale modeling framework make long-term TC-resolving simulations much more feasible.

Google's MapReduce programming model -: Revisited

Google's MapReduce programming model serves for processing large data sets in a massively parallel manner. We deliver the first rigorous description of the model including its advancement as Google's domain-specific language Sawzall. To this end, we reverse-engineer the seminal papers on MapReduce and Sawzall, and we capture our findings as an executable specification. We also identify and resolve some obscurities in the informal presentation given in the seminal papers. We use typed functional programming (specifically Haskell) as a tool for design recovery and executable specification. Our development comprises three components: (i) the basic program skeleton that underlies MapReduce computations;(ii) the opportunities for parallelism in executing MapReduce computations;(iii) the fundamental characteristics of Sawzall's aggregators as an advancement of the MapReduce approach. Our development does not formalize the more implementational aspects of an actual, distributed execution of MapReduce computations. (C) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Network distributed finite element analysis

The widespread availability of local-area networks has made the combined processing power of workstations a viable approach for compute-intensive analyses. In this paper, we describe several distributed algorithms for structural analysis using finite element methods, and we assess their performance on a conventional Ethernet-connected workstation network. Direct, iterative and hybrid equation solvers are evaluated for their performance on plane-elasticity problems, and are contrasted with respect to overall solution time and efficiency in distributing computations over a network. Equations modeling the costs of network communication and structural analysis computations are derived, and are subsequently used to predict the performance of several variations on the implemented algorithms. Our results show that each of the methods performs well on network architectures, and in particular that, while direct methods usually minimize network communication, certain iterative and hybrid methods can often be used to minimize overall solution time. Modeling Service Applications for Optimal Parallel Embedding

Leveraging the traditional virtual network concept, some recent research works have proposed the Virtual Data Center (VDC) as an abstraction to capture both bandwidth and compute/storage resource requirements for an application. However a virtual node in a VDC is limited to a virtual machine (VM), which can only be embedded onto a single physical machine. This condition limits the applicability of the VDC abstraction and the potential of deploying parallel computing. In this paper, we propose a new abstraction based on our Application Centric Network Virtualization (ACNV) approach. Specifically, we model a service application offered by a service provider as a virtual network of service function nodes, which closely matches the service provider's view on the architecture of the application. An infrastructure provider that hosts the application decides how to map the virtual network to the substrate network. Different from the VDC abstraction, each virtual node in our proposed abstraction can be split and mapped onto multiple physical machines, which allows the infrastructure provider to provide auto scaling for the application with variable number of physical machines for exploring the full benefits of parallel computing. We also allow multiple virtual nodes to be mapped and colocated in the same physical machine to minimize resource fragmentation and communication overhead. Extensive simulation results show that the proposed ACNV abstraction outperforms existing VDC-like approaches in achieving optimal resource usage.

Continuation-based transformations for coordination languages

Coordination languages for parallel and distributed systems specify mechanisms for creating tasks and communicating data among them. These languages typically assume that (a) once a task begins execution on some processor, it will remain resident on that processor throughout its lifetime, and (b) communicating shared data among tasks is through some form of message-passing and data migration. In this paper, we investigate an alternative approach to understanding coordination. Communication-passing style (CmPS) refers to a coordination semantics in which data communication is always undertaken by migrating the continuation of the task requiring the data to the processor where the data resides. Communication-passing style is closely related to continuation-passing style (CPS), a useful transformation for compiling functional languages. Just as CPS eliminates implicit call-realm sequences, CmPS eliminates implicit inter-processor data communication and synchronization requests. In a CmPS-transformed program, only continuations (i.e., control contexts) are trans transmitted across machines: all synchronization and data communication occurs locally. Besides providing significant optimization opportunities, CmPS is a natural representation for implementations on networks of workstations. This paper presents several operational semantics for a coordination language that supports first-class (shared) distributed data repositories. The computation sub-language considered is an untyped call-by-value functional language similar to pure scheme. The first semantics describes a conventional synchronous message-passing implementation;the second is a formulation of a CmPS implementation: and, the third refines this implementation to support computation migration, a technique to lazily migrate control state. An empirical study of local-decision-making-based software customization in distributed development

Making a decision for the requirements of multi-stakeholders is a key process, especially in distributed software development projects. Local decision-making for requirements in distributed software development is really difficult to accomplish as well as communicating these requirements over organizational boundaries and conveying them to the offshore developers is a big task. This study presents an empirical evaluation for the effectiveness of local decision-making on the customization process of the software in the distributed development against productivity and cost reduction. This empirical evaluation utilizes the Communicating Customization Requirements of Multi-Clients in a distributed Domain (CCRD) model. The empirical study estimates the productivity of CCRD in terms of the number of requirements for which decisions are made. In addition, the study estimates the reduction in the total cost of the customization process in terms of the salaries of the required local decision-makers. Besides, this study finds the critical point at which the CCRD is still valid (i.e. the minimum number of requirements that violate the significance and worthy of CCRD). The study uses a real data set of 18 clients distributed through 16 cities and involved in one customization project requested about 3000 requirements collected in 1290 working hours. The results of this study showed that the local decision-making improved the productivity of the customization process from 503 requirements in 200 min of simulation to 1,499 requirements. In addition, it reduced 41.5% of the cost. Besides, the results showed that the minimum number of requirements at which CCRD is still valid is 112 requirements.

International projects present really difficult logistics challenges. In international investment projects, a vast number of individualised deliveries has to be managed through a large supply network in a tight timeframe. This article investigates how the logistic challenges of international projects can be solved by utilising advanced web technologies and product identification. The paper presents a control system being built at Helsinki University of Technology, which is based on distributed programming, and wireless identification technologies. The aim of the system is to change the controlling mechanisms of project deliveries by giving the deliveries themselves the means with which to control their route.
