In this paper, we present a Java-based framework for supporting the development of music-related software, called the Crest Muse Toolkit. Although various efficient software for dataflow visual programming of sound and music processing have been developed, they are not necessarily suitable for exploiting conventional programming skills and experience. Our toolkit has an datallow-paradigm-based but non-visual programming environment that has been carefully designed from an object-oriented point of view. By using this tookit, one can develop music-related software smoothly and efficiently.

Stream processing is a compute paradigm that promises safe and efficient parallelism. Its realization requires optimization of multiple parameters such as kernel placement and communications. Most techniques to optimize streaming systems use queueing network models or network flow models, which often require estimates of the execution rate of each compute kernel. This is known as the non-blocking "service rate" of the kernel within the queueing literature. Current approaches to divining service rates are static. To maintain a tuned application during execution (while online) with non-static workloads, dynamic instrumentation of service rate is highly desirable. Our approach enables online service rate monitoring for streaming applications under most conditions, obviating the need to rely on steady state predictions for what are likely non-steady state phenomena. This work describes an algorithm to approximate non-blocking service rate, its implementation in the open source RaftLib [2] framework, and validates the methodology using streaming applications on multi-core hardware.

Gateways between IP-based networks and fieldbus systems often create the impression of providing a unique, standardised remote access to automation systems. At second sight, however, it becomes apparent that there are several possibilities on the LAN side with individual strengths and shortcomings. This paper reviews typical functions expected from a fieldbus gateway and investigates the properties of SNMP, LDAP, SQL, HTTP and a specially designed proprietary protocol (IGUANA) with respect to their appropriateness for remote access. Particular emphasis is laid on the restriction these protocols impose on the way the data inside the gateway are structured. We find that none of these approaches fully satisfies all requirements.

dataflow process networks lead to different theoretical model approaches and have demonstrated their adequacy in data-dominated intensive systems, namely Synchronous dataflows. Since their appearance, dataflow models became too focused and specialized in their target applications. The paper presents a set of translating mechanisms allowing the mapping from dataflow models into Petri nets. This mapping allows taking advantage of Petri nets well-known properties verification capabilities and enriching dataflow models concerning scheduler information and resource allocation. This allows one to find out some hidden embedded features (model semantics and syntax) not normally addressed in dataflow analysis tools, which is briefly characterized. dataflow model translation into Petri net domain give support to attain the required resource allocation under dataflow static scheduling list. This scheme allows one to make conclusion in Petri net domain to be applied in dataflow models to foresee the necessary amount of storage resources for each arc. An application example is used to illustrate the concept and effectiveness of the outlined approach.

To provide a good balance between the performance and flexibility of future digital control platforms, we propose an FPGA-based heterogeneous multiprocessor approach, in which the platform is composed of processing elements from a set of parameterizable heterogeneous Application-Specific Instruction-set Processors (ASIPs), connected with an hierarchical interconnect. With a case-study treating two different industrial-scale controllers, we show that a platform generated from our template using only a small library of instantiable ASIP types outperforms an optimized 8-core general-purpose implementation by a factor 4.9 on sampling frequency and reduces IO-delay with 37.5%.

Bounded Model Checking (BMC) for software is a precise bug-finding technique that builds upon the efficiency of modern SAT and SMT solvers. BMC currently does not scale to large programs because the size of the generated formulae exceeds the capacity of existing solvers. We present a new, compositional and property-sensitive algorithm that enables BMC to automatically find bugs in large programs. A novel feature of our technique is to decompose the behaviour of a program into a sequence of BMC instances and use a combination of satisfying assignments and unsatisfiability proofs to propagate information across instances. A second novelty is to use the control-and data-flow of the program as well as information from proofs to prune the set of variables and procedures considered and hence, generate smaller instances. Our tool BLITZ outperforms existing tools and scales to programs with over 100,000 lines of code. BLITZ automatically and efficiently discovers bugs in widely deployed software including new vulnerabilities in Internet infrastructure software.

Unlike their hard realtime counterparts, soft realtime applications are only expected to guarantee their "expected delay" over input data space. This paradigm shaft calls for customized statistical design techniques to replace the conventional pessimistic worst case analysis methodologies. Statistical design methods can provide a realistic assessment of design space, and improve the design quality by exploiting its stochastic behavior We present a novel probabilistic time budgeting algorithm that translates the application expected delay constraint into its components delay constraints. Our algorithm which is based on mathematical properties of the problem, determines the optimal maximum weighted timing relaxation of an application under expected delay constraint. Experimental results on core-based synthesis of several multimedia applications on FPGAs show about 20% and 19% average energy and area improvement, respectively.

In Romania, in the last decades, any plan of management concerning the environmental rehabilitation of the natural riverbeds has not been made. After the floods from 2004, 2005 and 2014 uncontrolled deposits of sediments have been recorded or, in contrary, in other places zones with erosion and uncontrolled coastal slides. As an immediate effect zones with risk for the local population, and not only, have appeared. The present paper estimates the capacity of transport of riverbeds in real conditions, based on local measurements registered during and after the floods. The model is tested for the Bistrita River, an area well-known for repeated floods, sometimes even in the same year. Near the watercourse, there are many locations, with a high population. The time variation of the liquid and solid phases discharged are directly connected with the sediment transport. In these conditions, the fine fractions from the material of the bed sediments are removed from its surface. Some of them become "armored" with the coarser part of the bed sediment. It is proposed a mathematical model to simulate the effect of both types of deposits, to study the surface of an open channel, with a movable bed. The entire alluvial stream, until the base rock, is considered with a small thickness so the non-uniformity of the grain size in vertical distribution from riverbed could be neglected. The boundary conditions in flood analysis consist in the upstream hydrograph and the stationary downstream water level. Knowing the flow rate and the water levels by direct measurements, there is possible to establish the risks zones, far away from the river borders. The primary purpose of this study is to minimize the effects of such uncontrolled floods, to detemine the risk zones and to present a solution for increasing the safety near the riverbed. Finally, some conclusion and references are mentioned.

The concept of "determinism" of parallel programs and parallel systems has received a lot of attention since the dawn of computing, with multiple proposals for formal and informal definitions of deterministic execution. In this paper, we present precise definitions of two related properties of program schemata - determinacy and repeatability. A key advantage of providing definitions for schemata rather than concrete programs is that it simplifies the task for programmers and tools to check these properties. The definitions of these properties are provided for schemata arising from data flow programs and task-parallel programs, thereby also establishing new relationships between the two models. Our hope is that these definitions will help provide a framework for enabling more precise definitions of determinism in future work.
