An important impact of the fast growing VLSI device technology will be the massive capability of parallel processing which will in turn greatly affect the trend of modern signal processing technology. For the new trend it will be a necessity to have revolutionary architectural design concepts such as topological mapping between algorithm and architecture, simple and regular data flow etc [1]. In this paper, based on a natural topology of the computing structure, a novel "computational wave-front" notion is introduced for describing and and validating data flow in locally connected networks. The parallel architectures include the linear system, with and without pivoting, and the least-square solver using Givens method. We believe that this set of linear system architectures will play a central role in modern signal processing.

Legacy applications can be difficult and time-consuming to understand and update due to the lack of modern abstraction mechanisms in legacy languages, as well as the gradual deterioration of code due to repeated maintenance activities. We present an approach for reverse engineering process model abstractions from legacy code. Such a process model can provide a quick initial understanding of an application, and can be a useful starting point for further program exploration. Our approach takes as input a user specification of interesting events, and creates a representation (i.e., a process model) that concisely depicts the occurrences of the events and the possible control-flow among them. The key features of our approach are the use of a logical data model of the program for specifying the events, and graph-projection techniques for creating the process model.

The program dependence graph (PDG) itself and the computed slices within the program dependence graph are results that should be presented to the user in a comprehensible form, if not used in subsequent analyses. A graphical presentation would be preferred as it is usually more intuitive than textual ones. This work describes how a layout for the PDGs can be generated to enable an appealing presentation. However, experience shows that the graphical presentation is less helpful than expected and a textual presentation is superior. Therefore, this work contains an approach to textually present slices of PDGs in source code. The innovation of this approach is the fine-grained visualization of arbitrary node sets based on tokens and not on complete lines like in other approaches. Furthermore, a major obstacle in visualization and comprehension of slices is the loss of locality. Thus, this work presents a simple, yet effective, approach to limit the range of a slice. This approach enables a visualization of slices where the local effects stand out against the more global effects. A second, more sophisticated approach visualizes the influence range of chops for variables and procedures. This enables a visualization of the impact of procedures and variables on the complete system.

An important aid to the problems of program comprehension has been the use of static analysis tools to provide useful and up to date information on a program. Through the use of different views a maintainer can gain a much clearer understanding of a program. A drawback of static analysis tools is that various representations of the code are required to construct the different views of the program. A solution is to devise a single combined representation containing sufficient information to allow construction of each required view. The paper describes research to extend an existing unified interprocedural graph to allow the representation of C programs. Techniques for the dependence analysis of pointer variables are described and the construction of interprocedural definition-use information in the presence of pointer parameters addressed. A fine grained program representation, the Combined C Graph (CCG), containing three new edge types is introduced.< >

The authors discuss the capability of graphical representations to ease the prototyping process and reduce the problem of information overload. The application of information-hiding and multiple views, coupled with ensuring consistency and automatic programming, can improve user productivity. The development of a graphical editor for performing hierarchical decomposition of composite PSDL (prototype system description language) operators for CAPS (computer aided prototyping system) is also discussed. Research on the graphical editor, as it relates to PSDL, indicates that a prototype design can be developed with much greater ease using the graphical editor than with only the syntax-directed editor. The graphical editor will also enhance prototype modification, presentation, and documentation.< >

The problem of finding the optimum wavefront that minimizes total computation time is discussed for iterative computations over two-dimensional arrays executed on linear or two-dimensional processor arrays. Assuming a continuum of data elements in two-dimensional arrays computed on a linear array of processors, efficient algorithms are presented to determine the optimum wavefront of the computation and the optimum partitioning of the wavefront into sections assigned to individual processors. An O(n/sup 2/) time algorithm, where n is the number of data dependence vectors, for finding the optimum wavefront for one-dimensional processor arrays is described. In addition, a method for finding a good wavefront for two-dimensional single-instruction, multiple-data (SIMD) machines is presented.< >

A cascadable circuit for high speed filtering has been made in a 1.2 mu m CMOS technology. Its structure allows the circuit to perform a 40 taps transversal filter either at 3 MHz alone or up to 50 MHz in a simple cascaded configuration of 16 circuits. The coefficients of the filter are mask programmable. The purpose of this circuit is for satellite communications.< >

Recently substantial research has been devoted to Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). One of a UAV's most demanding subsystem is vision. The vision subsystem must dynamically combine different algorithms as the UAVs goal and surrounding change. To fully utilize the available hardware, a run time system must be able to vary the quality and the size of regions the algorithms are applied to, as the number of image processing tasks changes. To allow this the run time system and the underlying computational model must be integrated. In this paper we present a computational model suitable for integration with a run time system. The computational model is called Image Processing data flow Graph (IP-DFG). IP-DFG has been developed for modeling of complex image processing algorithms. IP-DFG is based on data flow graphs, but has been extended with hierarchy and new rules for token consumption, which makes the computational model more flexible and more suitable for human interaction. In this paper we also show that IP-DFGs are suitable for modelling expressions, including data dependent decisions and iterations, which are common in complex image processing algorithms.

We address the problem of compression for wireless sensor networks, where each of the sensors has limited power, and acquires data that should be sent to a central node. The final goal is to have a reconstructed version of the sampled field at the central node, with the sensors spending as little energy as possible. We propose a distributed compression algorithm for multihop, distributed sensor networks based on the lifting factorization of the wavelet transform that exploits the natural data flow in the network to aggregate data by computing partial wavelet coefficients that are refined as the data flows towards the central node. A key result of our work is that by performing partial computations we greatly reduce unnecessary transmission, significantly reducing the overall energy consumption.

We present a global scheduling framework for synchronous data flow (SDF) streaming applications on MPSoCs, based on optimized computation and contention-free routing. The global scheduling of processors computing and communication transactions are formulated as constraint based problem, to avoid the scheduling overhead in TDMA-like heuristic schemes. A public domain constraint solver is exploited to solve the NP-complete scheduling efficiently, together with problem specific constraint modeling techniques. Experimental results show that the proposed framework can achieve a high predictable application throughput with minimized buffer cost. For instance, for applications in communication domain, higher throughput (up to 87%) has been observed with less buffer cost, compared to scenarios considering the heuristic scheduling overhead.
