The increasing demand for portable computing has elevated power consumption to be one of the most critical parameters for the execution of loops which constitute most of the computation of scientific applications. The reduction of a schedule length is usually considered to be opposite to the reduction of power. This paper presents a novel loop pipelining approach to reduce power consumption while reducing the schedule length. Power consumption is measured by transition activity between operands of successive operations. Both initial scheduling and loop scheduling across iterations try to reduce the transition activity at the inputs to the functional units. A series of experiments show that our method achieves considerable power dissipation and schedule length reduction.

A class of program transformations and data-flow-analysis tools is reviewed. The authors focus on supporting code reuse and maintenance by exploring transformations which modify programs. Typical purposes of modifications are to simplify programs, make side effects more visible, improve locality, or detect useless code. The authors review several methods which have been described for program simplification and identifying side effects. The authors describe an additional approach based on extracting information from parse tree representations of programs. The information is represented using various matrices; useless computations and side effects are identified through matrices.< >

As indicated by M.A. Jackson (1975), in order to create a generator to generate an efficient program structure which uses data flow for its constraint computations, we should detect and solve the problem of the clash of input-output data structures. The paper proposes a general framework to characterize the problem of structure clash in the creation of a generator for architectural CAD systems. This framework employs a method using relational inference to detect ordering clash, and at the same time determine the execution sequence of the generated procedural program. Moreover, the paper describes an implementation of this method for generating an object oriented program of a CAD system in the domain of architecture.

By the investigation to the characteristics of Pedestrians flow on stairways in some main Pedestrians distributing centers, such as the Shanghai Chifeng Road Light Orbit Station, Shanghai People's Square Subway Station and the Shanghai train station and so on, and on the basis of the investigation data above, the fundamental characteristics of Pedestrians flow in transfer station are found by qualitative analysis, the form of function about density-velocity and density-flow rate of Pedestrians flow on stairways is confirmed, then fitting functions in term of investigation data and ensuring parameters by using software, such as Matlab, thus the functions of Pedestrians flow in transfer stations are gained. By comparing vehicles flow to Pedestrians flow on stairways, Pedestrians flow on the walkways to Pedestrians flow on stairways, the foreign related researches to this thesis' research, the models of Pedestrians flow on stairways are suitable for transfer stations in some big cities in china. It will offer references and directions for improving capacity of stairways, strengthening management with Pedestrians flow and organizing effectively Pedestrians flow.

We propose a new approach to visual programming which adopts principles and elements from dynamic multimodeling for structured procedural programming, especially graphics programming. Unlike most traditional visual programming languages which simply replace syntactic parts of program with graphical objects, we applied the principles of dynamic model types in modeling and simulation to create program models and execute/simulate them. With this approach, computer programs are constructed by visual modeling instead of textual writing. The motivation for a method using dynamic model types in graphics programming is also tied to several emerging research areas: novice user interfaces, programming visualization, customized icons, and a broader view of aesthetics within programming. Metaphoric icons are extensively used for the visual representation of program model elements. Rube, a Web and XML-based modeling and simulation framework, provides the necessary environment for the construction, visualization and execution of program models.

One of the reasons that topological methods have a limited popularity for the visualization of complex 3D flow fields is the fact that such topological structures contain a number of separating stream surfaces. Since these stream surfaces tend to hide each other as well as other topological features, for complex 3D topologies the visualizations become cluttered and hardly interpretable. This paper proposes to use particular stream lines called saddle connectors instead of separating stream surfaces and to depict single surfaces only on user demand. We discuss properties and computational issues of saddle connectors and apply these methods to complex flow data. We show that the use of saddle connectors makes topological skeletons available as a valuable visualization tool even for topologically complex 3D flow data.

Nowadays, dynamically and partially reconfigurable architectures (DPRA) have been widely adopted by backbone equipment manufacturers to tackle the market pressure in terms of cost, performance, time to market, etc. Among all the advantages of DPRA, the run time rapid reconfiguration is still not fully utilized to deliver the greatest potential. In our work, a system level asynchronous virtual pipeline (SLAVP) is studied on a block partitioned DPRA for throughput critical telecommunication applications. Unlike previous approaches, SLAVP does not constrain the computation of pipeline stages to be strictly balanced, and it does not constrain the input specification to be a sequential data flow graph. By swapping tasks in/out, more logic stages are implemented than the physically available resources, and this achieves greater efficiency on the DPRA. In addition, we proposed a method to transform the problem to a generic system level synthesis problem, and then developed a hierarchical genetic algorithm (GA) based tool for synthesis on a block partitioned DPRA.

This paper explores mapping strategies for generating LIC-like images from streamlines and streamline-like images from LIC. The main contribution of this paper is a technique which we call pseudo-LIC or PLIC. By adjusting a small set of key parameters, PLIC can generate flow visualizations that span the spectrum of streamline-like to LIC-like images. Among the advantages of PLIC are: image quality comparable with LIC, performance speedup over LIC, use of a template texture that is independent of the size of the flow field, handles the problem of multiple streamlines occupying the same pixel in image space, reduced aliasing, applicability to time varying data sets, and variable speed animation.

We introduce the HyperC language, a data parallel extension of C intended for portability over a wide range of architectures. We present the main topics of the language: the explicit parallelism through the data, the synchronous semantics and the parallel flow control that allows asynchronous execution, new function qualifiers to emphasize locality properties code and, finally, new communication techniques to allow overlap of communications and computations even for irregular computations. All these features are discussed with respect to portability and code reusability issues.< >

A data flow general purpose digital signal processor has been previously developed [1] for real time applications of digital signal processing. The data flow Signal Processor (DFSP) is attached to a host computer, and is based on a binary tree structure. It employs two types of cells: processing and arithmetic cells, and utilizes residue number system [2] for arithmetic operations. The objective of this work is to develop architecture of the processing cell [3]. This processing cell is simulated on a VAX 11/785 computer system utilizing A Hardware Programming Language (AHPL) [4]. Simulation results shows that processing cell architecture is valid and DFSP is capable of high throughput rates. This paper describes structure and operation of the processing cell.
