A computer-aided performance evaluation (CAPE) tool to support the evaluation of graphical, hierarchical performance models used to design parallel/distributed real-time software systems is presented. It is a graphical interface for CAPE environments called GRAPE. GRAPE supports five different performance models: a queuing model, a state model, a computation structure model, a data flow model and a statistical model. Each of these models is contained in a separate subsystem, but they are linked together to represent multilevel hierarchical modeling, allowing the user to integrate the relationships between different performance metrics at different levels of analysis. The overall structure and graphic environment of GRAPE and the five models are described.< >

Recently, there has been a growing interest in multicast communication, in which a group of applications works together and a multicast message is sent to only the members of the desired group. New multicast algorithms are required to increase the efficiency of multicast communication. Current multicast algorithms, such as the source-based tree algorithms, become inefficient, especially in the case of large-scale groups, due to the large amount of stored data. The shared based tree (SBT) algorithms are more efficient than the source-based tree algorithms, because they use a single spanning tree shared by all members. But in case of large groups, these algorithms do not try to make use of the large size to reduce the total overhead of sending messages. We present a mechanism belonging to the SBT family to enhance the performance of multicast communication over large scale multicast groups.

The NA48 experiment at the CERN SPS aims to measure the parameter Re(/spl epsiv/'//spl epsiv/) of direct CP violation in the neutral kaon system with an accuracy of 2/spl times/10/sup -4/. Based on the requirements of: i) high event rates (up to 10 kHz) with negligible dead time ii) support for a variety of detectors with very wide variation in the number of readout channels iii) data rates of up to 150 MByte/s sustained over the beam burst iv) level-3 filtering and remote data logging in the CERN computer center the collaboration has designed and built a modular pipelined data flow system with 40 MHz sampling rate. The architecture combines custom-designed components with commercially available hardware for cost effectiveness and flexibility. To increase the available data bandwidth and to add filtering and monitoring capabilities, the original custom-built event builder hardware has been replaced by a farm of 24 Intel Pentium II based PCs running the Linux operating system during the shutdown between the 1997 and 1998 data taking periods. During the data taking period 1998 the system has been successfully operated taking ca. 70 Terabyte of data.

In order to adapt to rapid changes of manufacturing environment, a trend in flexible manufacturing systems (FMS) is to compose identical versatile machines and to use dynamic tool allocation strategy, sharing tools between machines with fast tool delivery system. Unlike a conventional FMS where parts are fed to the machines with the required tools, tools are acquired from other machines using a tool delivery system and parts can be finished on the same machine in these FMS. Therefore it is more important problem to plan tool flow using tool delivery system in these FMS rather than part flow in conventional FMS. In this paper, in FMS under dynamic tool allocation strategy, a method of part release considering tool scheduling at the stage of part release is proposed. In order to prove the efficiency of the proposed part release it is compared with other part release through simulation experiments. Performance measures in these experiments are the throughput and the number of tardy parts

In this paper, we consider a networking scenario in which a group of nodes wants retrieve a function of another group of nodes data. Here we assume that the function can be cast into a sum of functions of the local variables, a case that subsumes several interesting types of queries. One approach to solve this problem is to route the information from each node to the interested parties one at a time, relaying it over a tree of paths. A second strategy is to reuse the paths when possible, multicasting to the intended recipients the data. A third one, which is the one we are interested in exploring, computes along the routes as well. More specifically, the goal of this paper is to examine how the sought information be forwarded to the intended recipients, computing along the routes by gossiping with selected neighbors. Unlike the context of standard gossiping, in our problem the information needs to flow in a specific direction. In this work we provide a sufficient condition for the convergence to the desired result, and propose a method how to design the information flow for a given network and a problem.

This paper describes Orchid, a system that converts declarative mapping specifications into data flow specifications (ETL jobs) and vice versa. Orchid provides an abstract operator model that serves as a common model for both transformation paradigms; both mappings and ETL jobs are transformed into instances of this common model. As an additional benefit, instances of this common model can be optimized and deployed into multiple target environments. Orchid is being deployed in FastTrack , a data transformation toolkit in IBM Information Server.

This paper presents a new approach to resource estimation in high level synthesis. Given a set of operators and a data flow graph specification, we apply a probability based method to compute the probable numbers of operators, registers, bus and operator connections for each time step or algorithm latency. Combined with statistical metrics, we obtain a quick and accurate estimation module that includes real precedence constraints. The aim of this work is to provide ASICs designers with a guidance tool for a better use of high level synthesis. Algorithm properties like dated resource concurrence and operator link statistics are computed to guide algorithmic, transformations and hardware selection.

This work deals with the problem of data cache for dynamic Web servers. A set of requests (which number could be large) is submitted to a server for computing. Every request is modelled by a series-parallel graph of elementary tasks. These tasks are computed and their results are submitted to be stored into a cache. Due to the limitation of the cache capacity, some strategies should be used to select the right ones. The aim of This work is to determine, in a static session, what tasks results have to be cached in order to reduce the computing time. The problem has been formalized using graphs representation whose complexity is briefly shown to be NP-hard. Then, heuristics are proposed to select the cached data. Finally some preliminary experimental results are discussed.

Along with the emergence of high-speed communication technologies and protocols, tools for multimedia applications are growing in terms of their variety and their performances, making multimedia data flows candidates to the integration in almost every computer system. We particularly focus on the case of the factory plant where audio and video equipments could soon take part in the control/monitoring of manufacturing processes. Our paper presents a novel architecture for real time distributed systems using a 155.52 Mbit/s ATM network. The system is based on an intelligent network interface board, which integrates a processor and a field programmable gate array component to implement flexible high level real time data services in an off-host implementation approach. Moreover, the embedded ATM switch allows to build a large variety of topologies and provides high speed communication links, in particular for audio and video streams, inside the workstation. We also propose an MMS-like multimedia application service element for the integrated service computer manufacturing system and present some target applications.

The time costs of several parallel computation structures are analyzed. These analyses are based on assumptions that the processes communicate implicitly via the shared memory and that a locking mechanism is imposed on the access to shared variables. In previous work, an approach to estimating a set of special parallel computation structures has been developed. The authors expand this approach and propose a new technique for covering more general parallel computation structures.< >
