A key point in rapid system prototyping is to be able to incorporate into the design and development process specification of hardware and software systems in a more-or-less uniform framework. This paper presents a representation basis for parallel computation structures which covers both hardware and software systems, which is declarative and in which specification of components and structures is well separated. The top level and most abstract specification of the representation basis is: (a) All parallel computation structures can be represented as an extended form of directed graphs called data/control flow graphs (DCGs) with appropriate semantics chosen for the nodes and the arcs. The nodes are transformational components and the arcs are communication components. (b) All executions of parallel computation structures can be described as traversals of these graphs by appropriately defined transactions. (c) There exist straightforward algorithms for translations between this and other representations of parallel computation systems such as equational or production rule programs or finite state machines.< >

It is noted that real-time, nonintrusive instrumentation (RTNI) of high-performance RISC (reduced-instruction-set computer) microprocessors will be very difficult without some on-chip circuitry to support the event detection and data acquisition logic used to distinguish instruction execution flow and data generation and usage. The authors present a conceptual approach to providing unprecedented RTNI capabilities with a minimal amount of additional on-chip circuitry. In addition, through the use of the same pipelining and parallelism techniques used to implement the RISC microprocessor itself, the RTNI circuitry will impose little or no performance impact on the basic chip operating speed. The proposed approach does not perturb the system being monitored, so that the observations made are accurate and of high fidelity. In addition to providing highly selective, focused data acquisition, a large number of unique and/or generic events can be detected and acquired for a broad view of system operation. Combined with appropriate external support equipment and workstation software, this will result in a highly productive and capable integration and test environment.< >

The author describes features of a parallel scientific software re-engineering and development environment. The ultimate goal is the creation of an integrated scientific programming environment that can assist both in reverse engineering of existing applications for parallel execution and in forward engineering of new applications. The restructured form allows much easier portability across a wide range of parallel processor architectures. The author has chosen Fortran as the first target language, both because of the large number of existing programs that could benefit from restructuring, and because the relatively simple, straightforward language model makes it possible to focus more attention on basic restructuring issues. The approach puts the application programmer (scientist) in the loop to help make high-level decisions regarding code restructuring and parallelization strategies. The resulting code at any stage is better 'structured' and can thus serve as a good basis for further (automatic or manual) optimizations. The proposed approach has been used to generate a large-grain parallel (LGDF2) version of a 5300 line vectorized Monte Carlo code (EGS4V).< >

Vector field visualization is an important topic in scientific visualization. Its aim is to graphically represent field data in an intuitively understandable and precise way. Here a new approach based on anisotropic nonlinear diffusion is introduced. It enables an easy perception of flow data and serves as an appropriate scale space method for the visualization of complicated flow patterns. The approach is closely related to nonlinear diffusion methods in image analysis where images are smoothed while still retaining and enhancing edges. An initial noisy image is smoothed along streamlines, whereas the image is sharpened in the orthogonal direction. The method is based on a continuous model and requires the solution of a parabolic PDE problem. It is discretized only in the final implementational step. Therefore, many important qualitative aspects can already be discussed on a continuous level. Applications are shown in 2D and 3D and the provisions for flow segmentation are outlined.

With the introduction of new Petri net-like semantics for Activities in UML 2.0, these have become a complete language for modeling behavior. Thus, UML Activities are nowadays investigated for application in many areas from embedded systems to business process modeling. However, some issues have been discovered that currently seem to limit the practical applicability of Activities. In this paper, we present an overview of the identified semantic and syntactic problems, and point at possible solutions and directions for future research.

Architectures for the realization of block matching algorithms are discussed, with emphasis on highly concurrent systolic array processors. A mapping methodology for systolic arrays known from the literature is applied to block matching algorithms. Examples of two-dimensional and one-dimensional systolic arrays are presented. The required transistor count and the maximum frame rate for real-time processing of video telephone and TV signals using currently available CMOS technology are estimated.< >

After parts of a program have been modified to incorporate specification changes or functional enhancements, regression testing has generally been necessary to confirm that the other parts of the program still operate according to original specifications, since the modifications may have affected those parts. It has been reported that program slicing techniques extracting the parts of a program that perform calculations both for the functions to be modified and for functions not to be modified enable modifications to be made without influencing the operations of non modified functions. Such techniques, though, cannot prevent the non modified parts from influencing the modified parts. We analyze the influence of non modified parts on modified parts and then present an independent modification method that automatically eliminates such influence and that of course also prevents the non modified functions from being affected by the modifications. This method makes it possible for a programmer to modify a program by concentrating only on those parts that perform calculations related to the functions to be modified. In addition, because testing performed only for the modified parts gives the same results as does testing the entire program, this method makes it unnecessary to test non modified functions.

Presents a new algorithm for computing lower bounds on the number of functional units (FUs) required to schedule a data flow graph in a specified number of control steps. We use a formal approach to compute the bounds that can be proven to be tighter than those produced by existing methods, and that considers the interdependencies of the bounds on the different FU-types. This quick, yet accurate estimation of the number of FUs is used to generate resource constraints for a design, and thus reduce the design space.< >

System-on-Chip is comprehensively applied in the image and signal processing field. With higher demands of customers and increasing complexity of System-on-Chip, System-on-Chip system level design issues become more critical. Hardware/software partitioning is an important step in the system level design. Application feature analysis and early design decision for hardware/software partitioning become a “must”. In this paper, we present a new application feature analysis approach. The approach excavates and utilizes application features including control flow, dataflow, computation, storage, and critical code features. And based on the analysis results, feature model is automatically generated to support hardware/software partitioning. The approach can excavate and utilize application features to improve partitioning algorithms and SoC performance. A case of JPEG codec indicates that this approach supports early design decision and helps to design space exploration in hardware/software partitioning.
