Active networks represent a new approach to network architecture. Active networks provide a much more flexible network infrastructure than traditional networks do. Flexibility is a powerful merit of active networks, but it can raise considerable security problems. Current active network researches have applied diverse techniques to solve them. Cryptography is one way of protecting active networks. However it should not be applied conventionally, since the active network paradigm is different from the traditional one. It means that, in active network environments, active packets containing programmable codes should perform computations at intermediate-nodes as well as end-nodes. That is, since the packet sending-node does not know the intermediate receiving-node, it cannot apply traditional cryptographic techniques that can process each other only between end-nodes. The paper proposes a secure method for transferring active packets and performing computations using a transformed digital signature schemes with message recovery, in an active network environment in which intermediate packet receiving-nodes are not fixed. The proposed scheme uses a modified public key digital signature scheme in which signing/verifying key pairs have almost the same bit length and the verification-key storing server plays the role of key management server.

Summary form only given. Optical flow computation is known to be a fundamental step in many applications in image processing, pattern recognition, data compression, and biomedical technology. The goal is to compute an approximation to the projection of the 3D motion field onto the imaging surface. I consider in this talk the problem of real-time computation of dense optical flow for 2D and 3D images by the classical Horn-Schunck model. The basic assumption of this model is that the intensity variations are weak and only due to a movement in the image plan. This constant brightness assumption leads to an ill-posed problem that can only be solved by imposing an additional constraint requiring the flow field to be smooth by means of a standard regularization approach. The Horn-Schuck model is traditionally solved via a coupled point wise relaxation. The performance is generally poor when the image sequence data are strongly textured. I will review and discuss the multigrid components for a fast and robust computation. The parallel implementation of the proposed scheme using domain partitioning shows that the algorithm scales well up to 32 processors on a cluster of AMD Opteron CPUs which consists of four-way nodes connected by an Infiniband network. I will conclude by presenting some experimental results showing the good performance of the proposed algorithm on some classical 2D test images and also for computing 3D motion from cardiac C-arm CT images.

The philosophy of composing new software tools from previously created tool fragments can facilitate the development software systems. An examination is made of the extension of this philosophy to the design of program interpreters, demonstrating how the separation of interpretation into a core algorithm, value-kind definitions, and computation model allows the capture of conventional execution models, symbolic execution models, dynamic dataflow tracking, and other useful forms of program interpretation. An interpretation system based on this separation, called ARIES, is currently under development.< >

Spatial quadrature and speckle tracking are both techniques which extend the estimation of flow velocity or tissue motion velocity to two or three dimensions. The authors applied both under similar experimental conditions to assess and compare their performance. They also describe a new spatial quadrature processor that obviates the need for axial alignment under conditions of mixed axial-lateral flow. This processor avoids the estimate bias produced by jitter in the axial alignment step previously described, and thus allows the non-axial component(s) of flow to be tracked without sacrificing axial resolution. In the authors' flow experiment, summed radiofrequency echo data were captured in an M-mode scan geometry using 2:1 parallel receive processing in both spatial quadrature and two-beam speckle tracking configurations using a 7.5 MHz linear array and a modified commercial ultrasound scanner. Laminar flow was established in a wall-less vessel phantom using a computer-controlled pump. The authors captured echo data from this phantom at beam-vessel angles of 60/spl deg/ and 90/spl deg/ (i.e. pure lateral flow). These data were processed off-line to estimate flow velocity profiles. Volume flow rates were calculated from these profiles by integration. The mean volume flow rates estimated with 2-D speckle tracking agreed with the known flow rates with a maximum relative error of 7% for true lateral flow and 10% for mixed axial-lateral flow. The equivalent values for spatial quadrature were 5% and 15%.

Although research seems to address event and stream data processing as two separate topics, there are a number of similarities between them. For many advanced stream applications, both event and rule processing are needed and are not currently well-supported. Extant event processing systems concentrate primarily on complex events and rules and stream processing systems concentrate on stream operators, scheduling, and quality of service issues. Synergistic integration of these models will be better than the sum of its parts. We propose an integrated model to combine the capabilities of both models for applications that need both of them. Specifically, we introduced a number of enhancements, including stream modifiers, semantic windows, event generators, and enhanced event and rule specifications, to couple two models seamlessly. We prototype our integrated system using the stream processing system (MavStream) with the event processing system (Snoop and Sentinel) and discuss the design and implementation issues of our prototype.

This paper presents vision-based strategies for decentralized stabilization of unmanned vehicle (UV) formations. The key point of the algorithms is that they only require knowledge of leader-follower relative distances or bearing angles. These data are computed using measurements from pan-controlled off-the-shelf cameras on-board following robots, eliminating sensitivity to information flow among vehicles. The approaches are based on output feedback algorithms that use high-gain observers to estimate the derivatives of the UV's relative positions. A Lyapunov stability analysis guarantees that the closed-loop system is stable and the formation error can be made arbitrarily small. A 3D virtual environment and a vision system are used to validate the proposed methodologies

To achieve a high degree of autonomy, an agent usually needs some kind of memory mechanism. We present a new approach to the evolution of agents with memory, based on the use of genetically programmed networks. These are connectionist structures where each node has an associated program, evolved using genetic programming. Genetically programmed networks can easily be evolved into agents with very different architectures. We present experimental results from evolving genetically programmed networks as neural networks, distributed programs and rule based systems capable of solving problems where the use of memory by the agent is essential. Comparisons are made between the performance of these solutions and the performance of solutions obtained by other evolutionary strategies used to evolve agents with memory.
