Successful project management requires the effective control of the design teams and the exchange of information between them for successful design management. This paper describes a methodology involving discrete event simulation that can help the planning and control of building design. Discipline-based information flow models of the building design process are used to define the activities of the simulation model, concentrating on the concept and schematic design stages. Factors such as task durations and resources are then allocated along with any specific constraints that are to be evaluated. The model predicts the outcomes of the specific scenario of information related events, including design schedules and resource histograms. The paper describes the development and validation of the simulation model and discusses its potential application during the planning and design phases of building projects. It is concluded that this approach could form the basis of a useful tool for design managers responsible for multidisciplinary building design work.

Pentanalysis is a new method that allows the integration of task analysis with dataflow analysis. This is novel and desirable as it provides one means by which a human-computer interaction orientated method can provide input to the requirements specification stage of the software life cycle. It bridges the gulf that exists between this stage and one major representation, data flow diagrams, commonly used in the software design stage. The method is described and a worked example is provided to illustrate it.
This paper presents a formal semantics of data flow diagrams as used in Structured Analysis, based on an abstract model for dataflow transformations. The semantics consists of a collection of VDM functions, transform...

We base our approach to the design of complex logic ICs on four premises: Design of a chip's abstract architecture-its major components, their tasks, and their intercommunication-should precede definition of its functionality. Graphics is ideal for representing abstract architectures;text is better for functionality. The designer should not have to translate graphical information into text. Graphical and textual design capture can be integrated with synthesis.

Process tools are used during Systems Analysis to describe the process logic of bubbles in data flow diagrams, We conducted two experiments to determine the relative merits of three process tools: Structured English from textual tool category;Decision Tables from tabular tool category;and Nassi-Schneiderman Charts from graphical tool category, We measured three performance types: tool-based comprehension to find understandability of the information in the tool itself;context-based comprehension to find understandability of information in the tool in combination with the information in the rest of structured specification;and the time of comprehension, Unlike most previous research that show graphical tools are the best, our results are different, We show that textual tools (Structured English) are better than both graphical tools (N-S Chart) and tabular tools (Decision Tables), when the problem size is smaller and the users are technically (computer) oriented, The tabular tools (Decision Tables) are better than graphical tools and textual tools, when the problem is moderately large and the users are non-technically (management) oriented.

To date, CASE tools have generally been built around pre-CASE analysis and design techniques. The paper argues that more benefit would be obtained if analysis and design techniques were 're-engineered' so as to make the best use of the capabilities offered by CASE tools. Techniques such as entity-relationship modelling and data flow diagrams have successfully been transferred to the CASE environment, with significant administrative and clerical benefits. However, these techniques were not necessarily designed with automation in mind, and their CASE implementations have failed to adequately address important aspects of the modelling process, such as communication, collaboration, and the application of past experience. Ways in which these aspects can be supported pro-actively by CASE tools are given, using examples from a prototype CASE tool.

In this paper, we investigate the feasibility of applying logic programming to structured design. We propose to use Prolog as a common machinery for the representation of various structured tools. We illustrate through examples how to produce structure charts from data flow diagrams, and evaluate them according to commonly recommended design guidelines. If the structure charts produced are not satisfactory, the inherent backtracking mechanism in Prolog will help to produce other versions for further evaluation.

The paper gives an implementation paradigm for real-time systems developed using a dataflow method. It aims to provide a simple and coherent approach for producing designs that can be converted into a high-level language on target platforms with a suitable scheduling algorithm and concurrent programming primitives. A simple target machine is proposed in order that the model is widely applicable. A specific interpretation of the dataflow diagram (DFD) model is developed, the notation is extended and a process diagram (PD) is introduced VAXELN is identified as a suitable target system, and VAXELN Pascal is used to illustrate the given examples.

The increasing use of computer aided software engineering (CASE) tools, fourth-generation languages (4GLs) and other similar development automation techniques, has reduced the impact of implementation methods and individual ability on development task difficulty. It has therefore been suggested that measures derived from software specification representations may provide a consistent basis for relatively accurate estimation of subsequent development attributes. To this end, this paper describes the development of a functional complexity analysis scheme that is applicable to system specification products, rather than to the traditional products of the lower-level design and construction phases.

A specification framework for supplementing Structured Analysis (SA) process and data specification tools with predicative specifications is described. The framework includes composition operators, which a specifier can use to build specifications of large structures from specifications of their substructures, and is supported by consistency notions which support internal consistency checks and semantic decomposition of process models.
