With the development of e-science, more and more attention is drawn to the visualization and interoperation of scientific data. Integrating data grid technology and Geographical Information System (GIS) offers a well solution to implement e-science applications. Utilizing data grid technology could take advantages to share heterogeneous and distributed data sources. GIS provides visualization environment for spatial data and non-spatial data. In this paper we brought forward spatial information grid (SIG) architecture for gas network safety evaluation application. After discussing the key technologies of gas network SIG, such as spatial metadata modeling and spatial metadata searching, one prototype system was designed and then implemented. Through the SIG system, gas network safety evaluation results can be shown to users in an intuitive and convenient way.

Recent activities in Japan to deploy a data grid for high energy physics will be reported. Japanese collaboration of LHC-ATLAS experiment is now preparing a Tier-2 analysis center at Tokyo. Several institutes/universities have grid facilities and they are connected to the Tokyo Tier-2 center. Collaborators of Phenix of RHIC at BNL and CDF of Tevatron at FNAL are also using grid tools for data transmission. KEK-CRC is also hosting the Belle experiment VO and is running a site for it as a part of LCG. A general purpose virtual organization for Japanese high energy physics society is to be launched. Network and data location aware approach for simultaneous job scheduling and data replication in large-scale data grid environments

data grid integrates graphically distributed resources for solving data intensive scientific applications. Effective scheduling in grid can reduce the amount of data transferred among nodes by submitting a job to a node, where most of the requested data files are available. Scheduling is a traditional problem in parallel and distributed system. However, due to special issues and goals of grid, traditional approach is not effective in this environment any more. Therefore, it is necessary to propose methods specialized for this kind of parallel and distributed system. Another solution is to use a data replication strategy to create multiple copies of files and store them in convenient locations to shorten file access times. To utilize the above two concepts, in this paper we develop a job scheduling policy, called hierarchical job scheduling strategy （HJSS）, and a dynamic data replication strategy, called advanced dynamic hierarchical replication strategy （ADHRS）, to improve the data access efficiencies in a hierarchical data grid. HJSS uses hierarchical scheduling to reduce the search time for an appropriate computing node. It considers network characteristics, number of jobs waiting in queue, file locations, and disk read speed of storage drive at data sources. Moreover, due to the limited storage capacity, a good replica replacement algorithm is needed. We present a novel replacement strategy which deletes files in two steps when free space is not enough for the new replica： first, it deletes those files with minimum time for transferring. Second, if space is still insufficient then it considers the last time the replica was requested, number of access, size of replica and file transfer time. The simulation results show that our proposed algorithm has better performance in comparison with other algorithms in terms of job execution time, number of intercommunications, number of replications, hit ratio, computing resource usage and storage usage.

Simulations and experiments in the fusion community generate very large data sets at remote sites. Downloading it to local sites is very time consuming. Visualization and analysis of these data sets is then difficult, as the data comes in different formats. In addition, data analysis and visualization tools vary from site to site. These problems are addressed by a grid service under development at Tech-X. This service will connect heterogeneous data sets coming from simulations and experiments, bring data into well-established analysis tools and provide means to switch between data-transfer protocols, data formats and data analysis tools, thus providing mechanism for data and tools unification and comparison. In this paper we present the motivation, architecture, status of this application and first results of our performance tests comparing different data transfer mechanisms. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. data grid provides scalable infrastructure for storage resource and data files management. which supports several large scale applications. Due to limitation of available resources in grid, efficient use of the grid resources becomes an important challenge. Replication is a technique used in data grid to improve fault tolerance and to reduce the bandwidth consumption. This paper proposes a Dynamic Hierarchical Replication (DHR) algorithm that places replicas in appropriate sites i.e. best site that has the highest number of access for that particular replica. It also minimizes access latency by selecting the best replica when various sites hold replicas. The proposed replica selection strategy selects the best replica location for the users' running jobs by considering the replica requests that waiting in the storage and data transfer time. The simulated results with OptorSim, i.e. European data grid simulator show that DHR strategy gives better performance compared to the other algorithms and prevents unnecessary creation of replica which leads to efficient storage usage. data grid is one of key technologies to build tip large-scale dataset storage system by connecting scattered storage resources dispersedly located in the grid. One major challenge in data grids is how to provide good and timely access to huge amount Of data in distributed locations, given the high latency of interconnection networks. Parallel downloading methods can improve download efficiency and performance, and for such, processes Should have started from appropriate locations. In this research paper. we present the design framework of PU-DG Optimizer toolbox (also known as PU-DG Optibox) for data grid environments. The proposed toolbox is a package containing a number of high-end techniques and algorithms running as middleware on top of data grid platforms, in order to optimize file downloads, by improving its efficiency and performance. Moreover, PU-DG Optibox not only provides users and developers possibilities for setting their own priority strategies, as also different downloading modes. Furthermore, workload balancing to avoid low quality computing node to execute highly complex Job is also included in this design. Experimental results of techniques packaged in the proposed toolbox demonstrate its potential and effectiveness.

The data grid provides computation and storage facilities for intensive applications to carry out their computational jobs. The computational jobs in grid is carried out by grid scheduling, file access pattern and replica replacement and hence the performance of the grid is depending on them. The replication in the grid plays a major role in data grid. As the storage capacity is limited, replica replacement is required for providing space for new replication. The replica replacement should increase the performance of the grid. The replica replacement algorithms include LFU, LRU, Binomial, Zip f algorithms are using the uni-dimensional parameters to predict the possibility of using the same replica in the near future. But, it is a need for replica replacement algorithm to use the multidimensional parameters to predict the future use of the replica. The proposed work is using multi-dimension parameters to predict the future use of the replica. The proposed replica replacement algorithm using normalization and weight values to predict the future usage of replica. The proposed algorithm is simulated in the OptorSim simulator. The Hit Rate, Mean Job Execution Time, Effective Network Usage, and Computation Element Usage are used for evaluating the performance of the algorithm. The simulation result is showed that the proposed algorithm yielded better performance in comparison with other algorithms.

In a hospital, various kinds of medical images acquired from different modalities are generally used and stored in different department and each modality usually attaches several workstations to display or process images. To do better diagnosis, radiologists or physicians often need to retrieve other kinds of images for reference. The traditional image storage solution is to buildup a large-scale PACs archive server. However, the disadvantages of pure centralized management of PACs archive server are obvious. Besides high costs, any failure of PACS archive server would cripple the entire PACs operation. Here we present a new approach to develop the storage grid in PACs, which can provide more reliable image storage and more efficient query/retrieval for the whole hospital applications. In this paper, we also give the performance evaluation by comparing the three popular technologies mirror, cluster and grid.

data replication is used in data grid to enhance data availability and fault tolerance. However, replication should be used wisely because the storage size of each node reside on the data grid is limited. Thus, the node must accommodate only the important replicas. In this paper, a dynamic replication strategy that takes into account the number and frequency of requests, the size of the replica, and the last time the replica was requested is proposed. This strategy is an enhanced version of Fast Spread replication strategy. The simulation results show that the new proposed strategy attained better performance than Fast Spread with Least Recently Used (LRU) and Fast Spread with Least Frequently Used (LFU) in terms of total response time and total bandwidth consumption. Not only is the quantity of data growing in size, it is becoming Much more diverse and complex, significantly complicating the issues around its curation. We describe an approach to automation in which digital curation policies and strategies are represented as rules, which are implemented in data grids based oil the iRODS middleware.
