As an important cornerstone of artificial intelligence, the knowledge graph is one of the indispensable foundations of the new generation of artificial intelligence from perception to cognition. RDF graphs and property graphs are the two main data models of KGs, and various data management methods have been developed for the two models. However, differences in data models will lead to differences in how the data is stored and manipulated, which will further hinder the widespread application of knowledge graphs. In this paper, we propose a novel unified storage scheme, UniS, which considers the characteristics of the two data model comprehensively. Unlike the existing approaches, the detailed conversion process for different storage forms of data that we devised will make it easier to manage multiple KGs in one database. Meanwhile, the experimental results show that UniS improves the storage and query efficiency by up to an order of magnitude than the state-of-the-art storage engines.

Legacy applications on the Mainframe platform have been, and will probably continue to be, the backbone to many large scale enterprise systems in banks and insurance companies in NA, EU and other regions across the globe. Since 1980, majority of the development, however, has been on new platforms. Predominantly, distributed systems and Web-enabled applications to support new business lines, for example, Creditor Insurance, Customer Relationship Management, and Mobile Banking, are taking the center stages. Two challenges are fundamental: how we effectively leverage the existing assets in terms of logic and data, and how we sustain the changes. The former is focusing on integration, the latter infrastructural modernization. Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) is taking hold in the industry as the preferred new way of integration and modernization. One big question remains: is SOA hype, like a fad in fashion, which will likely die out as the snow melts, or a new technological innovation alluding to financial derivatives that led to the financial market crush? Our research reveals that it is likely a hype unless a roadmap based on engineering principles is established and implemented. This paper reviews some of the failure and success factors across the industry and proposes a template to develop such a roadmap. What differentiates this paper from others is, however, a set of pressures or pain points, technical and business drivers, proven solutions and enablers (SDEP) that the authors summarized from their in-the-field and on-the-project experiences. Central to the factors is a canonical data model, which we touch on in this paper and will cover in depth in the next paper.

The study of temporal database systems is relatively new in the field of computer science. Two developments have led to the present interest. The advances of the storage technology for large amounts of data and applications' requirements for time-dependent data have prompted our study of temporal databases. This thesis conducts a survey of the major research areas concerning temporal databases. Temporal data, taxonomies of temporal data models, temporal data languages, and temporal database systems are presented. It is argued here that future database systems should handle the temporal domain by an integrated temporal database system. By understanding the present technology and the need of temporal database systems, our research in the area of real-time temporal database systems can begin. It is the purpose of this thesis to provide the background information and research references of temporal database systems as a first step towards the real-time database system research. Real-time database systems are time -constrained and temporally constituted. Solutions in temporal database systems can contribute to the design of real-time military applications using temporal database computers.

In this article we address the issue of sharing information in organizational forms involving parties with various levels of mutual trust and need for cooperation. We evaluate existing data access models and emphasize their failure to deliver a feasible method for providing consistent views of corporate information shared with other partners in an ad hoc relationship. A new data access model is proposed as a solution to this problem. This model combines the ease of maintenance with the ability to present semantically consistent views of the world to all constituents of a virtual enterprise. We discuss the relevance of information sharing across multiple-access levels for achieving competitive advantage in the electronic marketplace.

A metrics based project management system (MPMS) integrates software metrics data, management queries based on the software metrics data, as well as their responses in a single location. Given the variations in projects, queries, metrics and physical databases to be used, MPMSes should be flexible from a user point of view, and also generic from a designer point of view. Two important steps in the design of an MPMS involve the determination of typical queries that may be posed by users, as well as the selection of the physical database for storing metrics and other project related knowledge. The paper discusses the relative advantages and drawbacks of three selected physical database models, namely the relational data model, object oriented data model, and graph data model, based on a variety of classes of metrics based queries. We conclude that the choice of data model varies according to the class of queries, and has strong implications on the ease and efficiency with which metrics based queries may be posed and executed.
