We suggest using a class of semiparametric dynamic panel data models to capture individual variations in panel data. The model assumes linearity in some continuous/discrete variables that can be exogenous/endogenous and allows for nonlinearity in other weakly exogenous variables. We propose a nonparametric generalized method of moments (NPGMM) procedure to estimate the functional coefficients, and we establish the consistency and asymptotic normality of the resulting estimators.

The study of temporal database systems is relatively new in the field of computer science. Two developments have led to the present interest. The advances of the storage technology for large amounts of data and applications' requirements for time-dependent data have prompted our study of temporal databases. This thesis conducts a survey of the major research areas concerning temporal databases. Temporal data, taxonomies of temporal data models, temporal data languages, and temporal database systems are presented. It is argued here that future database systems should handle the temporal domain by an integrated temporal database system. By understanding the present technology and the need of temporal database systems, our research in the area of real-time temporal database systems can begin. It is the purpose of this thesis to provide the background information and research references of temporal database systems as a first step towards the real-time database system research. Real-time database systems are time -constrained and temporally constituted. Solutions in temporal database systems can contribute to the design of real-time military applications using temporal database computers.

A metrics based project management system (MPMS) integrates software metrics data, management queries based on the software metrics data, as well as their responses in a single location. Given the variations in projects, queries, metrics and physical databases to be used, MPMSes should be flexible from a user point of view, and also generic from a designer point of view. Two important steps in the design of an MPMS involve the determination of typical queries that may be posed by users, as well as the selection of the physical database for storing metrics and other project related knowledge. The paper discusses the relative advantages and drawbacks of three selected physical database models, namely the relational data model, object oriented data model, and graph data model, based on a variety of classes of metrics based queries. We conclude that the choice of data model varies according to the class of queries, and has strong implications on the ease and efficiency with which metrics based queries may be posed and executed.

With the rise of portal sites for image-file download of musical scores, the electronic distribution of musical scores, an activity in progress of 15 years, has attracted increased attention. We describe several data models for score distribution and emphasize the one used in the Musedata archive of musical data (1984-). This archive (containing substantial quantities of the music of Bach, Handel, Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Corelli, and Vivaldi) employs a "solar" model of supersets of musical data. From these files, score printing, sound generation, and logical information for musical analysis can be generated. The design, efficiencies, and shortcomings of this 'write-once, convert-many" system are compared with models emphasizing generic musical-data interchange, and models in which music must be re-encoded for each new application. Finally, these considerations are examined in light of social practices and economic models traditionally associated with the print publication of music in Europe and the U.S.

Constructing and testing various data models is a highly iterative and creative process. It requires the work of a team in an interdisciplinary way and a good understanding of the domain within which the models are developed. In this paper, we showed an approach for the construction and the estimation of various data models for hardware commissioning of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). We reported the development of the methodology for constructing and testing the data models for electrical quality assurance (ELQA) and presented the outputs of the iterative processes of various models intended for the development of a software analysis tool for the ELQA campaigns, which will be used to discover similar patterns of low quality tests on circuits when dealing with non-conformities of the LHC hardware commissioning in the future.

This paper examines the application of count data models to firm level panel data on technological innovations. The model we propose exhibits dynamic feedback and unobserved heterogeneity. We develop a fixed effects estimator that generalises the standard Poisson and negative binomial models allowing for dynamic feedback through both the firm's stock of knowledge and its product market power. By using the long pre-sample history of innovation information this ''entry stock'' estimator is shown to control for correlated fixed effects and is compared with an alternative nonlinear GMM estimator. We find evidence of history dependence in innovation activity although variables reflecting the company's economic environment are also found to play a major role.
