The general Petri nets are not suitable to model the data operations of concurrent read and coverable write. Therefore, Petri net with data operations (PN-DO) is defined, which extends contextual nets with write arcs and some other components. Its execution semantics are defined, and a new method is proposed to construct its reachability graph that is of a smaller scale than traditional reachability graph. Based on this kind of reachability graph, we propose a method to check the errors of inconsistent data and missing data. Meanwhile, case studies are given to illustrate the effectiveness of our methods.

A long running data-intensive computational application acquires costly computing resources. With the emerging new architectures, like computing systems with multiple nodes of many-core CPUs and accelerators, while domain-specific tools and libraries employed in such an application leverage high parallelism on accelerators for intensive computations, the remaining resources can potentially be utilized for other application-related data operations. Such data operations, called opportunistic data operations in this work, must usually be carried out for post-processing or follow-up analytics based on results produced during the runtime of the application. These operations are not easily backfilled or preempted under the guidance of the domain scientist or by common task scheduling systems due to their complex *** this paper, we introduce a framework for domain scientists to identify and execute opportunistic data operation tasks. With a minimal specification or modification of the main application, the scientists can specify, monitor, and execute opportunistic tasks independently from the main application and the framework will detect underutilized resources to execute these tasks, thereby, optimizing utilization efficiency within the allocated resources. We present experiments to demonstrate the applicability of our framework on a magnetic field modeling running on the LUMI computing system. © 2024 IEEE.

While the world is relying more on data, text descriptions of data inevitably become more prevalent. These descriptions synthesize data and highlight important things from the data for readers to better understand key takeaways. Obviously, there is a connection between data and text as it is a representation of information from the data. However, despite the surge of AI and data management research, studies on the connection between them are still lacking. Understanding the connection would not only streamline the work involving both components, but also introduce novel interaction techniques between them. Therefore, this work aims to develop a better comprehension of the connection by focusing on how each phrase in the sentence is formed given clues from the rest of the sentence and the associated data. We collected data-rich documents and investigated how people describe data in natural language. We found that this problem is complicated because it incorporates two difficult subproblems - language and data management problems. Also, each phrase inference can be viewed as a series of data operations that can be traced back to language. Thus, we propose a taxonomy of Language-Inferred data operations (LIDOs) based on our collected dataset. In addition, we propose data-Language Inference Framework (DLIF), a conceptual framework that eases the phrase prediction process by deconstructing this complex problem into five simpler steps. Examples of DLIF applications are shown with real datasets to illustrate how DLIF works.

We present a Dynamic Provable data Possession (PDP) system with Public Verifiability and data Privacy. Three entities are involved: a client who is the owner of the data to be stored, a server that stores the data and a Third Party Auditor (TPA) who may be required when the client wants to check the integrity of its data stored on the server. The system is publicly verifiable with the possible help of the TPA who acts on behalf of the client. The system exhibits data dynamicity at block level allowing data insertion, deletion and modification to be performed. Finally, the system is secure at the untrusted server and data private. We present a practical PDP system by adopting asymmetric pairings to gain efficiency and reduce the group exponentiation and pairing operations. In our scheme, no exponentiation and only three pairings are required during the proof of data possession check, which clearly outperforms all the existing schemes in the literature. Furthermore, our protocol supports proof of data possession on as many data blocks as possible at no extra cost.

This work addresses the issue of exploring design alternatives for data part (as contrasted with control part) implementations for digital systems using register transfer (RT) level components. Certain assumptions are made regarding the RT level of design, and a model for data part designs is postulated. It is shown that the number of possible designs is usually very large. A method to enumerate all possible designs is presented, followed by an algorithm that can generate the designs. The algorithm is easily implementable on a computer to explore the data part design space. A simple example, the implementation of a binary multiplier, is chosen and the different possible designs are generated. An evaluation of the designs along the dimensions of cost and performance is then performed and some interesting aspects of the design space are brought out. Finally, the implications on the design space of changing the component costs are described.
