Stateful InREC: Stateful In-Network Real Number Computation With Recursive Functions

The current generation of Reconfigurable Match-Action Tables switches are highly programmable, able to support stateful operations and pipeline specifications using languages like P4. Nevertheless, these switches do not offer primitives to support real-valued operations on the data plane, thus requiring support from external servers or middle boxes to perform advanced operations. We introduce Stateful InREC, a system that extends the capabilities of programmable switches to support in-network real-valued operations using the IEEE half-precision floating point representation. Stateful InREC relies on decomposing real-valued functions into lookup tables taking into account the RMT model constraints to reach the right trade-off between accuracy and resource usage. It also supports state management for the computation of recursive function over time series. Stateful InREC prototype on Barefoot Tofino switches demonstrates the efficiency of Stateful InREC for in-network computation of different types of operations and its application for in-network logistic regression models used for classification problems. We also demonstrate the use of Stateful InREC to implement an ARIMA model on a Tofino switch for DDoS detection. Our evaluation of Stateful InREC shows that it is possible to implement complex in-network applications with high accuracy and low latency.

Transport layer congestion control relies on feedback signals that travel from the congested link to the receiver and back to the sender. This forward congestion control loop, first, requires at least one Round-Trip Time (RTT) to react to congestion and secondly, it depends on the downstream path after the bottleneck. The former property leads to a reaction time in the order of RTT + bottleneck queue delay, while the second may amplify the unfairness due to heterogeneous RTT. In this paper, we present Reverse Path Congestion Marking (RPM) to accelerate the reaction to network congestion events without changing the end-host stack. RPM decouples the congestion signal from the downstream path after the bottleneck while maintaining the stability of the congestion control loop. We show that RPM improves throughput fairness for RTT-heterogeneous TCP flows as well as the flow completion time, especially for small data Center TCP (DCTCP) flows. Finally, we show RPM evaluation results in a testbed built around P4 programmable ASIC switches.

data plane where all the packet processing and forwarding is done based on control plane logic can be used to monitor the network traffic along with forwarding of the packets. Security threats have become common in IoT networks. Due to the pandemic, as things have moved to virtual platforms, security at every level, including network devices, has become a major concern. Attackers try to gather as much data as possible through various means. In networking, dependence on the control plane to take forwarding decisions is inefficient when quick response is required, in cases of attack mitigation, anomaly detection, intrusion detection etc. Some of the forwarding logic in control plane can be transformed into rules at the data plane. In this work, this is achieved through programmable switches and domain specific language such as P4. A machine learning algorithm is used to train a classifier on publicly available malware dataset. These rules are used for classifying data packets. This work derives rules from a public malware traffic dataset and uses Mininet (network emulator) to emulate an IoT network, and 88% accuracy is achieved in detecting malware at the data plane.

The development of programmable switches such as the Intel Tofino has allowed network designers to implement a wide range of new in-network applications and network control logic. However, current switch programming languages, like P4, operate at a very low level of abstraction. This paper introduces SwitchLog, a new experimental logic programming language designed to lift the level of abstraction at which network programmers operate, while remaining amenable to efficient implementation on programmable switches. SwitchLog is inspired by previous distributed logic programming languages such as NDLog, in which programmers declare a series of facts, each located at a particular switch in the network. Logic programming rules that operate on facts at different locations implicitly generate network communication, and are updated incrementally, as packets pass through a switch. In order to ensure these updates can be implemented efficiently on switch hardware, SwitchLog imposes several restrictions on the way programmers can craft their rules. We demonstrate that SwitchLog can be used to express a variety of networking applications in a mere handful of lines of code.

Software-defined networking (SDN) has notably improved networks by providing Machine Learning-Powered programming capabilities at the control plane (CP), making it easier to dynamically manage the network resources according to varying traffic conditions. However, the geographically remote location of the CP from the data plane (DP) leads to significant round-trip delays in the order of milliseconds, which can adversely impact the performance of delay-sensitive and real-time traffic. To address this issue, this paper proposes a novel innetwork reinforcement learning (RL) inference framework that extends programming capability from the CP to the DP for fine-grained control of network resources to meet the Quality of Service (QoS) demands of real-time applications. The in-network RL inference is achieved by adopting a match-action table mapping strategy in the DP and validating it through programming protocol-independent packet processors (P4). A P4 meter extern is utilized to allocate bandwidth to individual traffic flows based on their QoS requirements. Our proposed strategy achieves in-network RL inference at the line rate with negligible processing overhead while reducing packet loss rate and jitter by up to 92% and 57%, respectively, compared to the CPbased approach. Additionally, we evaluate the performance of our proposed bandwidth allocation framework using a state-of-theart deep-deterministic policy gradient (DDPG)-based RL agent with a heuristic priority experience replay (hPER) technique. Our proposed DDPG agent achieves a faster convergence rate, higher reward, superior training stability, and up to 56% reduction in operational cost compared to two alternative agents.

In this study, the feasibility of a hardware abstracted switch that targets TSN applications is evaluated. A solution using P4, a flexible solution to program SDN switches, is discussed. Nevertheless, extensions to this approximation have to be made to respect time oriented features that are unavailable to implement in a sole P4 environment. As a consequence, the Linux tc package is used to program the traffic control functionalities such as TAS and CBS shapers. The final implementation is a proof of concept that uses tc and runs on top of the Linux kernel. Finally, future work is discussed as a passible followup to this project.

data breaches linked to individual and company information are exposed on an almost daily basis. With increasing media attention and visibility of this security issue, users are becoming more aware of privacy concerns related to their activity on the Internet. Fundamental to the operation of the Internet is the Domain Name System (DNS), which translates domain names to IP addresses enabling easy web browsing. Encrypted DNS has become popular to increase user privacy by ensuring that activity transmitted over domain queries is not visible to intermediary network devices between the client and the DNS endpoint. Unfortunately, this undermines the security services designed to analyse DNS traffic for the detection of exploitation of DNS for use as a covert communication and data exfiltration channel. In this work, we propose a solution, DoHxP, to enable protection of DNS over HTTPS (DoH) traffic from data exfiltration without compromising user privacy. Our results show that DoHxP successfully prevents up to 99.88% of the malicious DoH traffic from being transmitted outside of the network.

The current generation of networks empowers the use of programmable switches whose behaviour can be defined using languages like P4. Nevertheless, these languages do not support network-wide deployment of stateful real-value functions. This paper presents NetREC, an extension of RMT programmable data planes designed to enable stateful real-value functions computation across multiple switches. NetREC first decomposes the real-value functions into a dependency graph of elementary operations that are distributed among the network. This distribution is carried out by dynamically generating and solving an integer linear program. We deploy a prototype of NetREC on a network of Tofino switches and demonstrate its capability of computing recursive real-value functions like exponential weighted moving average.

The rapid development of information technologies necessitates the use of high-speed network technologies. Software defined networking and network function virtualization are critical technologies for high-bandwidth, dynamically managed and cost-effective networks. Offloading network functions to the data plane and management of network service function chain (SFC) using data plane programming improve network performance. In this study, the framework that enables the management of service function chains from the data layer with P4 programming is proposed. The proposed framework can work in hybrid networks and allows SFC-unaware network functions to be used in SFC. In the study, a prototype has been developed for the proposed framework and the preliminary results of evaluations have been presented.
