Large-scale science applications generate great volumes of data, which are frequently stored in remote data repositories or shared with cooperating laboratories across the network through the use of advance reservation connections. The groups that utilize these data transfers would benefit from having their applications simultaneously transmit data over multiple channels in parallel. Many of today's networks do not however provide the resource-aware scheduling to support this parallelization. As part of a framework for providing said applications with parallel resource-optimized provisioning of end-to-end requests, we propose and develop a scheduling enhancement to ESnet's On-demand Secure Circuits and Advance Reservation System (OSCARS). This enhancement comes in the form of a front-end client, the behavior of which we quantitatively evaluate to compare the performance of parallel resource-provisioning to serial resource usage for both unicast and anycast scenarios.

Learning analytics research presents challenges for researchers embracing the principles of open science. Protecting student privacy is paramount, but progress in increasing scientific understanding and improving educational outcomes depends upon open, scalable and replicable research. Findings have repeatedly been shown to be contextually dependent on personal and demographic variables, so how can we use this data in a manner that is ethical and secure for all involved? This paper presents ongoing work on the MOOC Replication Framework (MORF), a big data repository and analysis environment for Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs). We discuss MORF's approach to protecting student privacy, which allows researchers to use data without having direct access. Through an open API, documentation and tightly controlled outputs, this framework provides researchers with the opportunity to perform secure, scalable research and facilitates collaboration, replication, and novel research. We also highlight ways in which MORF represents a solution template to issues surrounding privacy and security in the age of big data in education and key challenges still to be tackled.

A virtual national data grid for Australia – current situation and vision for the future

Seamless access and efficient management of vast quantities of resource data is a significant and increasing challenge for both government and industry. CSIRO and Schlumberger embarked on a joint a study of geoscience data exchange between industry and government, based on their complementary domain of expertise and networks of national agencies and *** is clear that rapidly increasing volumes of data; the need for faster, more-efficient business practices; low-price data storage and higher Internet bandwidth will change the way that companies and governments do business. To explore current perceptions and future directions for geoscience data management and data exchange, interviews were conducted with 19 petroleum companies, 9 minerals companies, 11 government groups, 4 software providers and 2 *** in data exchange vary widely between industry and government. However, some common themes emerge: few groups have the resources to properly manage, curate and add-value to data. Much time is spent (and wasted) in moving data around. Companies generally ‘minimally comply’ with regulations for data submission as they see little advantage in putting any more time into data submission than is required by legislation. Finally, data management is usually seen as a financial and administrative burden rather than an enabler to add *** vision promoted by most people visited can be summarised as the immediate need for a "Single interface that delivers all validated spatial geoscientific data independent of database structure and location". The need for a multi-agency collaborative virtual databases is clear, and the way forward is as much controlled by policy issues as with technological enablers.

Fear and loathing in cooperative collection development

Purpose - The paper's aim is to demonstrate how research libraries might overcome their reluctance to enter into cooperative collection development ventures by devising resource sharing partnerships and streamlining ILL operations to the extent that they can replace significant portions of local collections. The data obtained from these and other library services can be used to identify collection areas that are ripe for cooperative collecting. Design/methodology/approach - The author uses data from the Borrow Direct cooperative to illustrate how efficient and effective ILL services have become, and identifies a number of data types that might be collected in a data repository and used to inform the construction of a successful cooperative collection development program. Findings - A data repository consisting of the following data types will prove useful in outlining the parameters of a cooperative collection development program: ILL and circulation transactions, database usage statistics, online catalog searches, electronic resource access logs, courseware usage and resources, user demographics course offerings and enrollment, and funding sources. Originality/value - Library managers and administrators interested in levels of library cooperation much deeper than the traditional ILL and consortial borrowing operations will find this article especially useful. The discussion of Metridoc and its application in building data repositories is also helpful.

The DART project undertook a coordinated program of e-Research requirements analysis, software development, policy and guideline creation and prototyping to investigate how best to: (1) collect, capture and retain large data sets and streams from a range of different sources;(2) deal with the infrastructure issues of scale, sustainability and interoperability between repositories;(3) support deposit into, access to, and annotation by a range of actors, to a set of digital libraries which include publications, datasets, simulations, software and dynamic knowledge representations;(4) assist researchers in dealing with intellectual property issues during the research process;and (5) adopt next-generation methods for research publication, dissemination and access. In this short paper we will describe a case study using an X-ray diffractometer. We report on the implementation and some of the issues encountered during the implementation.

dataset repositories publish a significant number of datasets continuously within the context of a variety of domains, such as biodiversity and oceanography. To conduct multidisciplinary research, scientists and practitioners must discover datasets from various disciplines unfamiliar with them. Well-known search engines, such as Google dataset and Mendeley data, try to support researchers with cross-domain dataset discovery based on their contents. However, as datasets typically contain scientific observations or collected data from service providers, their contextual information is limited. Accordingly, effective dataset indexing can be impossible to increase the Findability, Accessibility, Interoperability, and Reusability (FAIRness) based on their contextual information. This paper presents an indexing pipeline to extend contextual information of datasets based on their scientific domains by using topic modeling and a set of suggested rules and domain keywords (such as essential variables in environment science) based on domain experts' suggestions. The pipeline relies on an open ecosystem, where dataset providers publish semantically enhanced metadata on their data repositories. We aggregate, normalize, and reconcile such metadata, providing a dataset search engine that enables research communities to find, access, integrate, and reuse datasets. We evaluated our approach on a manually created gold standard and a user study.

Historically the railway industry has experienced considerable difficulty in effectively integrating RCM data. Previous work on information integration led to the implementation of a simple three tier architecture, where RCM data was collected from legacy systems, stored in a data repository (or warehouse) and processed using analysis tools. This paper discusses the history of RCM data integration and the path followed up to the present situation within the railway industry. It proposes an alternative to the third tier of the architecture, enabling the effective capture of the context of asset data, ensuring domain expert collaboration and supporting effective data analysis. Previous experience has demonstrated that, using a Web Ontology Language (OWL), we can automatically deduce (or infer) valuable information from integrated RCM data, using asset context and expert knowledge that is captured in an ontology. This paper describes how an OWL ontology may form part of a specification for RCM integration, highlighting its part in the solution to mass data integration.

The PRIDE Proteomics Identifications database provides users with the ability to explore and compare mass spectrometry-based proteomics experiments that reveal details of the protein expression found in a broad range of taxonomic groups, tissues and disease states. A PRIDE experiment typically includes identifications of proteins, peptides and protein modifications. Many of the submitted experiments also include processed peak lists representing the mass spectra that provide the evidence for these identifications. Since the inception of the PRIDE project, a number of tools supporting submission of data to PRIDE have been developed. Of particular note is the “PRIDE Converter” that has become the tool most frequently used for the production of PRIDE submissions at the time of writing. The PRIDE XML format has been expanded to provide submitters with the capacity to annotate fragment ion information on to peptide identifications and the fragmentation spectra that provide the experimental evidence for these peptides. A novel algorithm for annotating fragment ion information on to peptides and their evidential mass spectra has also been developed that will ultimately provide a route for evaluating the quality of peptide identifications arising from tandem mass spectrometry. This algorithm allows the visualisation of potential fragment ions on to the identified mass spectra, even where no such information has been submitted. In this chapter, we describe how PRIDE can be applied as a research tool and how the experiments in PRIDE can be compared and analysed. We also explore how complex queries can be constructed using the PRIDE BioMart. Finally, we will describe how the user can integrate PRIDE data with annotation from other resources, using federated BioMart queries. less

How (not) to design and implement a large-scale, interdisciplinary research infrastructure

Research is increasingly carried out in large-scale, interdisciplinary research programs that aim to tackle complex, multidimensional, and future-oriented challenges. We explore the case of the Swiss Initiative in Systems Biology (***), the largest ever Swiss research program, and more specifically the partial failure of the program's IT-project SyBIT. Apart from providing IT and data science support, SyBIT aimed to establish a common data repository. The establishment of this common data repository failed. Based on an interdisciplinary analytical framework, we propose that five explanatory factors account for this failure: a lack of demand from researchers, technological complexity of heterogeneous data formats, absence of governance decisions in favor of the data repository, interpersonal problems, and political difficulties. We conclude that for large-scale research infrastructure, the policy design is crucial for success, given that it can result in positive or negative after effects, such as user resistance versus acceptance and technological complexity versus coherence.
