DIKE: a system supporting the semi-automatic construction of cooperative information systems from heterogeneous databases

In this paper we present DIKE, a system supporting the semi-automatic construction of cooperative information systems from heterogeneous databases. The input of DIKE consists of the set of databases to belong to the cooperative system. First, DIKE constructs a data repository representing a structured, integrated and consistent description of the information stored in the input databases. The data repository thus constructed is then used as the core structure of a mediator-like module supporting the user-friendly integrated access to available data resources. The core of DIKE is the extraction and exploitation of the inter-schema knowledge (in the form of inter-schema properties) relative to the involved database schemas. An Approach for Content Retrieval from Web Pages Using Clustering Techniques

Mining the content from an information database provides challenging solutions to the industry experts and researchers, due to the overcrowded information in huge data. In web searching, the information retrieved is not an appropriate, because it gives ambiguous information for the user query, and the user cannot get relevant information within the stipulated time. To overcome these issues, we propose a new methodology for information retrieval EPCRR by providing the top most exact information to the user, by using the collaborative clustered automated filter which makes use of the collaborative data set and filter works on the prediction by providing the highest ranking for the exact data retrieved. The retrieval works on the basis of recommendation of data which consists of relevant data set with highest priority from the cluster of data which is on high usage. In this work, we make use of the automated wrapper which works similar to the meta crawler functionality and it obtains the content in the semantic usage data format. Obtained information from the user to the agent will be ranked based on the Enabled Pile clustered data with respect to the metadata information from the agent and end-user. The information is given to the end-user with the top most ranking data within the stipulated time and the remaining top information will be moved to the data repository for future use. The data collected will remain stable based on the user preference and works on the intelligence system approach in which the user can choose any information under any instances and can be provided with suitable high range of exact content. In this approach, we find that the proposed algorithm has produced better results than existing work and it costs less online computation time.

Parallel and high performance computing experts are obsessed with performance and scalability. Performance analysis and tuning are important and complex but there are a number of software tools to support this. One methodology is the detailed recording of parallel runtime behavior in event traces and their subsequent analysis. This regularly produces very large data sets with their own challenges for handling and data management. This paper evaluates the utilization of the MASi research data management service as a trace repository to store, manage, and find traces in an efficient and usable way. First, we give an introduction to trace technologies in general, metadata in OTF2 traces specifically, and the MASi research data management service. Then, the trace repository is described with its potential for both performance analysts and parallel tool developers, followed with how we implemented it using existing metadata and how it can utilized. Finally, we give an outlook on how we plan to put the repository into productive use for the benefit of researchers using traces.

Security and Confidentiality Approach for the Clinical E-Science Framework (CLEF)

Objectives: CLEF is an MRC sponsored project in the E-Science programme that aims to establish methodologies and a technical infrastructure for the next generation of integrated clinical and bioscience research. Methods: The heart of the CLEF approach to this challenge is to design and develop a pseudonymised repository of histories of cancer patients that can be accessed by researchers. Robust mechanisms and policies have been developed to ensure that patient privacy and confidentiality are preserved while delivering a repository of such medically rich information for the purposes of scientific research. Results: This paper summarises the overall approach adopted by CLEF to meet data protection requirements, including the data flows, pseudonymisation measures and additional monitoring policies that are currently being developed. Conclusion: Once evaluated, it is hoped that the CLEF approach can serve as a model for other distributed electronic health record repositories to be accessed for research.

Towards an integrated statistical system at Statistics Netherlands

Changes in circumstances put pressure on Statistics Netherlands (SN) to redesign the way its statistics are produced. Key developments are: the changing needs of data-users, growing competition, pressure to reduce the survey burden on enterprises, emerging new technologies and methodologies and, first and foremost, the need for more efficiency because of budget cuts. This paper describes how SN, and especially its business statistics, can adapt to these new circumstances. We envisage an optimum situation as one with a single standardised production line for all statistics and a central data repository at its core. This single production line is supported by generic and standardised tools, metadata and workflow management. However, it is clear that such an optimum situation cannot be realised in just a few years. It should be seen as the point on the horizon. Therefore, we also describe the first transformation steps from the product-based stovepipe-oriented statistical process of the past to a more integrated process of the future. A similar modernisation process exists in the area of social statistics. In the near future both systems of business and social statistics are expected to connect at pivotal points and eventually converge on one overall business architecture for SN. Discussions about such an overall business architecture for SN have already been started and the first core projects have been set up.

Public repositories for proteomics data have accelerated proteomics research by enabling more efficient cross-analyses of datasets, supporting the creation of protein and peptide compendia of experimental results, supporting the development and testing of new software tools, and facilitating the manuscript review process. The repositories available to date have been designed to accommodate either shotgun experiments or generic proteomic data files. Here, we describe a new kind of proteomic data repository for the collection and representation of data from selected reaction monitoring (SRM) measurements. The PeptideAtlas SRM Experiment Library (PASSEL) allows researchers to easily submit proteomic data sets generated by SRM. The raw data are automatically processed in a uniform manner and the results are stored in a database, where they may be downloaded or browsed via a web interface that includes a chromatogram viewer. PASSELenables cross-analysis of SRMdata, supports optimization of SRMdata collection, and facilitates the review process of SRMdata. Further, PASSELwill help in the assessment of proteotypic peptide performance in a wide array of samples containing the same peptide, as well as across multiple experimental protocols.

Record deduplication aims at identifying entities that are potentially the same in a data repository. A set of pairs that is manually labeled is generally used to tune the deduplication process, as each dataset has a particular dirtiness pattern. However, producing an informative set of pairs is a very costly task, especially in very large datasets (even for expert users). We propose a new sampling strategy that is able to select a very small and informative set of pairs from large datasets. Our results show that our approach reduces user effort substantially while achieving a competitive or superior matching quality.

In this work we address the problem of portable and flexible privacy-preserving access rights for large online data repositories. Privacy-preserving access control means that the service provider can neither learn what access rights a customer has nor link a request to access an item to a particular customer, thus maintaining privacy of both customer activity and customer access rights. Flexible access rights allow any customer to choose any subset of items from the repository and correspondingly be charged only for the items selected. And portability of access rights means that the rights themselves can be stored on small devices of limited storage space and computational capabilities, and therefore the rights must be enforced using the limited resources *** main results are solutions to the problem that utilize minimal perfect hash functions and order-preserving minimal perfect hash functions. None of them use expensive cryptography, all require very little space,and they are therefore suitable for computationally weak and space-limited devices such as smartcards, sensors, etc. Performance of the schemes is measured as the probability of false positives (i.e., the probability that access to an unpurchased item will be permitted) for a given storage space bound. Using our techniques, for a data repository of size n and subscription order of m ll n items, we achieve a probability of false positives of m^-c using only O(cm) bits of storage space, where c is an adjustable parameter (a constant or otherwise) that can be set to provide the desired performance. This is the first time that such provable bounds are established for this problem, and we believe the techniques we use are of more general interest through the unusual use we make of perfect hashing.

A mobile phone evolves as a data repository where the pieces of data have different owners and may thus be protected by different security policies. These pieces of data are used on an open environment controlled by a non-specialist user: the owner of the mobile phone. However, previous research projects have studied dynamic monitoring of information flows in a system. We believe that the results of these projects are well adapted for protecting information on an embedded system as a mobile phone. Nevertheless the difficulties to define the information flow policy that govern the information flow monitor is an obstacle for the usability of such an approach by a wide audience. In this paper we detail step by step the construction of a precise information flow policy for the Android operating system. Our main objective is to answer the following questions: in practice, how much sensitive information can be monitored on a real system? What information it is desirable to monitor on a mobile phone? What is the induced execution overhead for applications? Can we propose a default information flow policy?
