A machine learning approach for accelerated design of magnesium alloys. Part A:Alloy data and property space

Typically, magnesium alloys have been designed using a so-called hill-climbing approach, with rather incremental advances over the past century. Iterative and incremental alloy design is slow and expensive, but more importantly it does not harness all the data that exists in the field. In this work, a new approach is proposed that utilises data science and provides a detailed understanding of the data that exists in the field of Mg-alloy design to date. In this approach, first a consolidated alloy database that incorporates 916 datapoints was developed from the literature and experimental work. To analyse the characteristics of the database, alloying and thermomechanical processing effects on mechanical properties were explored via composition-process-property matrices. An unsupervised machine learning(ML) method of clustering was also implemented, using unlabelled data, with the aim of revealing potentially useful information for an alloy representation space of low dimensionality. In addition, the alloy database was correlated to thermodynamically stable secondary phases to further understand the relationships between microstructure and mechanical properties. This work not only introduces an invaluable open-source database, but it also provides, for the first-time data, insights that enable future accelerated digital Mg-alloy design.

Towards more effective visualisations in climate services: good practices and recommendations

visualisations are often the entry point to information that supports stakeholders' decision- and policy-making processes. Visual displays can employ either static, dynamic or interactive formats as well as various types of representations and visual encodings, which differently affect the attention, recognition and working memory of users. Despite being well-suited for expert audiences, current climate data visualisations need to be further improved to make communication of climate information more inclusive for broader audiences, including people with disabilities. However, the lack of evidence-based guidelines and tools makes the creation of accessible visualisations challenging, potentially leading to misunderstanding and misuse of climate information by users. Taking stock of visualisation challenges identified in a workshop by climate service providers, we review good practices commonly applied by other visualisation-related disciplines strongly based on users' needs that could be applied to the climate services context. We show how lessons learned in the fields of user experience, data visualisation, graphic design and psychology make useful recommendations for the development of more effective climate service visualisations. This includes applying a user-centred design approach, using interaction in a suitable way in visualisations, paying attention to information architecture or selecting the right type of representation and visual encoding. The recommendations proposed here can help climate service providers reduce users' cognitive load and improve their overall experience when using a service. These recommendations can be useful for the development of the next generation of climate services, increasing their usability while ensuring that their visual components are inclusive and do not leave anyone behind.

The Accuracy of Gauge-Figure Tasks in Monoscopic and Stereo Displays

The gauge-figure task (GFT) is a widespread method used to study surface perception for evaluating rendering and visualization techniques. The authors investigate how accurately slant angles probed on well-defined objects align with the ground truth (GT) in monoscopic and stereoscopic displays. Their results show that the GFT probes taken with well-defined objects align well with the GT in the all-monoscopic and all-stereoscopic conditions. However, they found that a GF rendered in stereo over a monoscopic stimulus results in a strong slant underestimation and that an overestimation occurred in the inverse case (monoscopic GF andstereoscopic stimulus). They discuss how their findings affect the interpretation of absolute GFT measures, compared to the GT normal.

In this article, we discuss challenges and strategies for evaluating natural language interfaces (NLIs) for data visualization. Through an examination of prior studies and reflecting on own experiences in evaluating visualization NLIs, we highlight benefits and considerations of three task framing strategies: Jeopardy-style facts, open-ended tasks, and target replication tasks. We hope the discussions in this article can guide future researchers working on visualization NLIs and help them avoid common challenges and pitfalls when evaluating these systems. Finally, to motivate future research, we highlight topics that call for further investigation including development of new evaluation metrics, and considering the type of natural language input (spoken versus typed), among others.

Visualising the relationships between synoptic circulation type and air quality in Sydney, a subtropical coastal-basin environment

Ozone and particle pollution are of concern for the Sydney basin, in particular during warm months (November to March) when pollution levels can exceed national standards. Previous studies on the relationship between synoptic circulation and air quality focused on high pollution days or aggregated air quality conditions over the region as a whole. This study provides both temporal and spatial analyses of the synoptic processes affecting warm-month ozone and particle pollution in Sydney. A warm-month synoptic catalogue was developed by applying the self-organising map method to the NCEP/NCAR geopotential height reanalysis for south-east Australia. The catalogue was linked to mesoscale meteorological features such as drainage flows and sea breezes, and subsequently to the spatial variability in air quality across the Sydney basin. The typical synoptic types commonly associated with high or low ozone and PM10 levels, as well as variations in visibility, were identified. The results suggest that, due to Sydney's subtropical coastal-basin environment, the interaction between meso- and synoptic-scale features determine local air quality conditions in the region, rather than the synoptic conditions alone. Emissions from bushfires appear to have considerable impacts on the synoptic modulation to visibility and PM10 levels, with such impacts tending to be more at a local scale. In contrast, no comparable impacts were found for ozone pollution. For ozone and visibility, the probability for an exceedance day under some synoptic types varied considerably over time, implying that there might have been a shift in the role of synoptic modulation to local air quality associated with changes in air emissions profiles. This study provides a leap in our understanding of the relationship between synoptic circulation and air quality in a coastal-basin environment. A Confidence-Guided Technique for Tracking Time-Varying Features

Application scientists often employ feature tracking algorithms to capture the temporal evolution of various features in their simulation data. However, as the complexity of the scientific features is increasing with the advanced simulation modeling techniques, quantification of reliability of the feature tracking algorithms is becoming important. One of the desired requirements for any robust feature tracking algorithm is to estimate its confidence during each tracking step so that the results obtained can be interpreted without any ambiguity. To address this, we develop a confidence-guided feature tracking algorithm that allows reliable tracking of user-selected features and presents the tracking dynamics using a graph-based visualization along with the spatial visualization of the tracked feature. The efficacy of the proposed method is demonstrated by applying it to two scientific datasets containing different types of time-varying features.

OpenSpace: Bringing NASA Missions to the Public

This viewpoint presents OpenSpace, an open-source astrovisualization software project designed to bridge the gap between scientific discoveries and their public dissemination. A wealth of data exists for space missions from NASA and other sources. OpenSpace brings together this data and combines it in a range of immersive settings. Through non-linear storytelling and guided exploration, interactive immersive experiences help the public to engage with advanced space mission data and models, and thus be better informed and educated about NASA missions, the solar system and outer space. We demonstrate this capability by exploring the OSIRIS-Rex mission.

Broadening Intellectual Diversity in Visualization Research Papers

Promoting a wider range of contribution types can facilitate healthy growth of the visualization community, while increasing the intellectual diversity of visualization research papers. In this paper, we discuss the importance of contribution types and summarize contribution types that can be meaningful in visualization research. We also propose several concrete next steps we can and should take to ensure a successful launch of the contribution types.
