Multi-touch devices and their applications are one of the newest trends in human interaction research. While this approach has been envisioned more than 20 years ago, advances in computational power and display resolution have allowed the implementation of impressive hardware devices with virtually unlimited tracking capabilities. A large number of eye-catching applications have been implemented around the world but there is a clear need for practical engineering applications in order to allow this technology to become appealing even for industrial and academic purposes. This paper tries to address this issue by proposing a complete hardware and software solution for multi-touch multi-user data visualisation. A new interface for analysing measurement data as well as manipulating virtual instruments has been created in the belief that it will help students and researchers alike.

The use of virtual reality (VR) technology in data visualisation and analytics introduces a new way for users to explore and understand the data through Immersive Analytics (IA). However, previous works evaluated the IA based on the traditional 2D visualisation tasks and thus reduced the VR benefits. The IA is also still in its infancy and lacks standard design guidelines for user tasks and evaluation. Hence, this paper aims to review the information exploration tasks in IA. This work used the systematic literature review methodology to search and analyse the literature, where there were eighteen studies identified for the systematic mapping based on type by task taxonomy. The timestep task is an additional user task proposed to support the IA function. The studies found that the IA supports various data visualisation fields and spatial tasks. Lastly, the limitation of this paper is discussed to identify potential future studies.

BackgroundHealth and social care interventions are often complex and can be decomposed into multiple components. Multicomponent interventions are often evaluated in randomised controlled trials. Across trials, interventions often have components in common which are given alongside other components which differ across trials. Multicomponent interventions can be synthesised using component NMA (CNMA). CNMA is limited by the structure of the available evidence, but it is not always straightforward to visualise such complex evidence networks. The aim of this paper is to develop tools to visualise the structure of complex evidence networks to support *** performed a citation review of two key CNMA methods papers to identify existing published CNMA analyses and reviewed how they graphically represent intervention complexity and comparisons across trials. Building on identified shortcomings of existing visualisation approaches, we propose three approaches to standardise visualising the data structure and/or availability of data: CNMA-UpSet plot, CNMA heat map, CNMA-circle plot. We use a motivating example to illustrate these *** identified 34 articles reporting CNMAs. A network diagram was the most common plot type used to visualise the data structure for CNMA (26/34 papers), but was unable to express the complex data structures and large number of components and potential combinations of components associated with CNMA. Therefore, we focused visualisation development around representing the data structure of a CNMA more completely. The CNMA-UpSet plot presents arm-level data and is suitable for networks with large numbers of components or combinations of components. Heat maps can be utilised to inform decisions about which pairwise interactions to consider for inclusion in a CNMA model. The CNMA-circle plot visualises the combinations of components which differ between trial arms and offers flexibility in presenting additional information such as th

Planning and development involves balancing potentially conflicting goals. Development control systems attempt to optimise the trade-offs between ecology, economy and society. Environmental impact assessment (EIA) is one o f the tools used to improve the way in which decisions to develop are made. E IA is now well established in national and international legislation and declarations, and in policy and practice. As implemented in Ireland, E IA is carried out by statutory planning and licensing authorities, with the assessment based on the information provided in Environmental Impact Statements (EIS). There is scope for improvement in the effectiveness o f communication o f graphic, text and tabular information, which would benefit the assessment and decision-making process. data visualisation theory is considered in the context o f the prediction o f environmental impacts, and the following suggestions are made for best-practice in graphical presentation in EISs: Use horizontally-oriented histograms to illustrate impact significance. Com pile the predicted impacts in 'small multiples' o f histograms. Use sequential colour schemes. A void tones that cannot be differentiated by colour blind viewers. Use double-ended colour schemes to encode the adverse-to-beneficial data range. U se techniques such as 'TableLens' to aggregate and summarise the data. Illustrate additional characteristics, such as uncertainty, using bullet graphs.

data visualisation, as a key tool in data understanding, is widely used in science and everyday life. In order data visualisation to be effective, perceptual factors and the characteristics of the display interface play a crucial role. Virtual Reality is nowadays accepted as a valid medium for scientific visualisation, because of its inherent characteristics of real-world emulation and intuitive interaction. However, the use of VR in abstract data visualisation is still limited. In this research, I investigate the use and suitability of mobile phone-based Virtual Reality as a medium for abstract data visualisation. I develop a prototype VR An- droid application and visualise data using the Scatterplot and Parallel Coordinates methods. After that, I conduct a user study to compare the effectiveness of the mobile VR application compared to a similar screen-based one by implementing some data exploration scenarios. The study results, while not being statistically significant, show improved accuracy and speed in the mobile VR visualisation application. The main conclusions are two-fold: Virtual Reality is beneficial for abstract data visualisation, even in the case of limited processing power and display resolution. Mobile VR, an affordable alternative to expensive desktop VR set-ups can be utilized as a data visualisation platform.

This research undertook an investigation in digital archaeology, modernisation, and re- vitalisation of the InetVis software application, developed at Rhodes University in 2007. InetVis allows users to visualise network traffic in an interactive 3D scatter plot. This software is based on the idea of the Spinning Cube of Potential Doom, introduced by Stephen Lau. The original InetVis research project aimed to extend this concept and implementation, specifically for use in analysing network telescope traffic. The InetVis source code was examined and ported to run on modern operating systems. The porting process involved updating the UI framework, Qt, from version 3 to 5, as well as adding support for 64-bit compilation. This research extended its usefulness with the implementation of new, high-value, features and improvements. The most notable new features include the addition of a general settings framework, improved screenshot generation, automated visualisation modes, new keyboard shortcuts, and support for building and running InetVis on macOS. Additional features and improvements were identified for future work. These consist of support for a plug-in architecture and an extended heads-up display. A user survey was then conducted, determining that respondents found InetVis to be easy to use and useful. The user survey also allowed the identification of new and proposed features that the respondents found to be most useful. At this point, no other tool offers the simplicity and user-friendliness of InetVis when it comes to the analysis of network packet captures, especially those from network telescopes.

data storytelling (DS) is rapidly gaining attention as an approach that integrates data, visuals, and narratives to create data stories that can help a particular audience to comprehend the key messages underscored by the data with enhanced efficiency and effectiveness. It is been posited that DS can be especially advantageous for audiences with limited visualisation literacy, by presenting the data clearly and concisely. However, empirical studies confirming whether data stories indeed provide these benefits over conventional data visualisations are scarce. To bridge this gap, we conducted a study with 103 participants to determine whether DS indeed improve both efficiency and effectiveness in tasks related to information retrieval and insights comprehension. Our findings suggest that data stories do improve the efficiency of comprehension tasks, as well as the effectiveness of comprehension tasks that involve a single insight, compared with conventional visualisations. Interestingly, these benefits were not associated with participants' visualisation literacy.

Non-linear dimensionality reduction can be performed by manifold learning approaches, such as stochastic neighbour embedding (SNE), locally linear embedding (LLE) and isometric feature mapping (ISOMAP). These methods aim to produce two or three latent embeddings, primarily to visualise the data in intelligible representations. This manuscript proposes extensions of Student's t-distributed SNE (t-SNE), LLE and ISOMAP, for dimensionality reduction and visualisation of multiview data. Multi-view data refers to multiple types of data generated from the same samples. The proposed multi-view approaches provide more comprehensible projections of the samples compared to the ones obtained by visualising each data-view separately. Commonly, visualisation is used for identifying underlying patterns within the samples. By incorporating the obtained low-dimensional embeddings from the multi-view manifold approaches into the K-means clustering algorithm, it is shown that clusters of the samples are accurately identified. Through extensive comparisons of novel and existing multi-view manifold learning algorithms on real and synthetic data, the proposed multi-view extension of t-SNE, named multi-SNE, is found to have the best performance, quantified both qualitatively and quantitatively by assessing the clusterings obtained. The applicability of multi-SNE is illustrated by its implementation in the newly developed and challenging multi-omics single-cell data. The aim is to visualise and identify cell heterogeneity and cell types in biological tissues relevant to health and disease. In this application, multi-SNE provides an improved performance over single-view manifold learning approaches and a promising solution for unified clustering of multi-omics single-cell data.

To tackle sustainability, the building sector has to take into account the life cycle impacts of buildings. However, due to the complexity of life cycle assessment (LCA) and life cycle costing (LCC), architects still have a huge hurdle to integrate LCA and LCC in their design processes and even more in the first design stage where the most important decisions are taken. To overcome the complexity, this research aims to develop a comprehensive visual approach in line with an architectural design process. Firstly, environmental impacts are translated into cost so that they can be integrated with financial cost in a life cycle costing approach. Secondly, various visualisations of this single unit result are selected, and a visual approach is elaborated, which supports an integration of life cycle approach in a design process. This paper demonstrates via a theoretical simplified case of dwellings in the Belgian context how the approach can support making more desirable design decisions. The proposed approach with a combined use of visualisations can be expected to enable architects integrating LCA and LCC results in their design loop thinking and easily overview the effect of their design decisions for sustainable dwellings.
