The importance of biological monitoring for the assessment of river quality is well established Bio-monitoring programmes, in particular the recording of benthic macroinvertebrate assemblages, produce an abundance of data to support the process of river quality assessment However, current data analysis techniques are largely based on subjective score systems that do not fully realise the potential information value of such complex multivariate data sets More advanced techniques of data analysis and visualisation can help to maximise the value of biological data, and hence to more efficiently and effectively direct resources, funding and research A River Pollution Diagnostic System (RPDS) is described RPDS was recently developed by the authors for the Environment Agency in England and Wales, it aims to maximise information retrieval from biological and environmental data.

Learning analytics dashboards (LADs) simplify complex learner data into accessible visualisations, providing actionable insights for educators and students. However, their educational effectiveness has not always matched the sophistication of the technology behind them. Explanatory and interactive LADs, enhanced by generative AI (GenAI) chatbots, hold promise by enabling dynamic, dialogue-based interactions with data visualisations and offering personalised feedback through text. Yet, the effectiveness of these tools may be limited by learners' varying levels of GenAI literacy, a factor that remains underexplored in current research. This study investigates the role of GenAI literacy in learner interactions with conventional (reactive) versus scaffolding (proactive) chatbot-assisted LADs. Through a comparative analysis of 81 participants, we examine how GenAI literacy is associated with learners' ability to interpret complex visualisations and their cognitive processes during interactions with chatbot-assisted LADs. Results show that while both chatbots significantly improved learner comprehension, those with higher GenAI literacy benefited the most, particularly with conventional chatbots, demonstrating diverse prompting strategies. Findings highlight the importance of considering learners' GenAI literacy when integrating GenAI chatbots in LADs and educational technologies. Incorporating scaffolding techniques within GenAI chatbots can be an effective strategy, offering a more guided experience that reduces reliance on learners' GenAI literacy.

Social media (such as online communities) is one of the main sources generating large, unstructured, and redundant big data. Analytics of social media data helps to maximise its utility, and visualisation plays a significant role in the exploration of both big data and the results of the analysis on it. A large amount of big data from online communities (and other social networks) are typically visualised through their interactions (e.g., who interacts with whom) in the form of graphs where people are represented as nodes and the interactions between them as edges. But there is a lot of other information that could be analysed and visualised, such as annotations performed through crowd sourcing which has been very popular in recent time. How can one visualise the social network data from the prism of such annotations? This is what we address here. Spring embedding algorithms have been used in semantic visualisations depicting semantic similarity relationship among nodes. In this paper, we borrow this idea and propose a multifaceted visualisation of annotated online community data using spring embedded graphs. The unique feature of our approach is that it offers a visualisation that captures the proximity of the members to annotated concepts in a heterogeneous community graph. We have evaluated our approach to visualise annotations related to emotions and work barriers faced by members of a Government run online community that was trialled to provide informational and emotional support to its members. We show with specific examples how our approach offers a multifaceted visualisation of the online community and facilitates interpretations and analysis of the large amount of social data captured.

Effects of feedback visualisation of peer-assessment on pre-service teachers' data literacy, learning motivation, and cognitive load

Backgrounddata literacy (DL) is vital for teachers, as it enables them to build on data and improve teaching and learning. Therefore, developing DL among pre-service teachers is *** purpose of this study is threefold: to evaluate whether a feedback visualisation of peer assessment-based teaching approach (FVPA-based teaching approach) can (1) promote pre-service teachers' DL;(2) enhance their learning motivation;and (3) improve their cognitive *** research was conducted based on a pre-test-post-test control group quasi-experimental design. With 20 participants in the experimental group and 21 in the control group, a total of 41 pre-service teachers were included in the study. The pre-service teachers in the experimental group adopted the FVPA-based teaching approach, and those in the control group adopted the traditional peer assessment-based learning *** and ConclusionsThe experimental group participants outperformed the control group participants in DL, learning motivation, and cognitive load. FVPA was conducive to helping pre-service teachers critically interpret data, understand their teaching and learning issues, and improve self-reflection. The findings indicate a reciprocal relationship between learning motivation and DL;improving the learning motivation of pre-service teachers could promote their *** study contributes to current knowledge by providing empirical evidence on the benefits of an FVPA-based teaching approach in improving pre-service teachers' DL, motivation, and cognitive load. Digital crimes are a part of modern life but evidence of these crimes can be captured in network traffic data logs. Analysing these logs is a difficult process, this is especially true as the format that different attacks can take can vary tremendously and may be unknown at the time of the analysis. The main objective of the field of network forensics consists of gathering evidence of illegal acts from a networking infrastructure. Therefore, software tools, and techniques, that can help with these digital investigations are in great demand. In this paper, an approach to analysing and visualising network traffic data based upon the use of self-organising maps (SOM) is presented. The self-organising map has been widely used in clustering tasks in the literature;it can enable network clusters to be created and visualised in a manner that makes them immediately more intuitive and understandable and can be performed on high-dimensional input data, transforming this into a much lower dimensional space. In order to show the usefulness of this approach, the self-organising map has been applied to traffic data, for use as a tool in network forensics. Moreover, the proposed SOM takes into account the qualitative features that are present in the traffic data, in addition to the quantitative features. The traffic data was was clustered and visualised and the results were then analysed. The results demonstrate that this technique can be used to aid in the comprehension of digital forensics and to facilitate the search for anomalous behaviour in the network environment.

Mapping of groundwater aquifers has historically followed the path of 2D geological maps and interpreted cross sections derived from available geological borehole data. Isopachs or aquifer thicknesses are then derived from data layers. The addition of geophysical interpretation, through methods such as gravity and electro-magnetic surveys provide some confidence of continuity between boreholes. The advent of GIS and modern computer modelling has stretched the data further into the three dimensional digital world with the use of high-end numerical modelling and high-tech visualisation tools. Input data may be assessed for quality and integrity. However, rarely are the digital data layers assessed by visual inspection. With a visual inspection the influence of individual data points on data layers is more easily accounted for, enabling a more rigorous assessment of the quality and or suitability of input data. Visual inspection aids in the identification of geological structures that often have significant impacts on groundwater dynamics, where such structures are often not identifiable from 2 dimensional borehole data. Visual inspection also allows a range of experts to view the aquifers in a multi-dimensional state and apply additional knowledge to the development of the models. While many models may be based upon all available data, we argue that without visual assessment they are not based upon all available interpretation and assessment tools. We propose that models of complicated geological systems undergo several stages of visual assessment, including for example: 1. Integration of raw data sets and preliminary 3 dimensional model development, 2. visualisation of layers, identification of spurious data and any geological features and discussion of where or what additional data sets are required (e.g., geophysics etc). Visual brokerage: Communicating data and research through visualisation

Researchers increasingly use visualisation to make sense of their data and communicate findings more widely. But these are not necessarily straightforward processes. Theories of knowledge brokerage show how sociopolitical contexts and intermediary organisations that translate research for public audiences shape how users engage with evidence. Applying these ideas to data visualisation, I argue that several kinds of brokers (such as data collectors, designers and intermediaries) link researchers and audiences, contributing to the ways that people engage with visualisations. To do this, I draw on qualitative focus groups that elicited non-academic viewers' reactions to visualisations of data about UK migration. The results reveal two important features of engagement: perceptions of brokers' credibility and feelings of surprise arising from visualisations' content and design. I conclude by arguing that researchers, knowledge brokers and the public produce - as well as operate within - a complex visualisation space characterised by mutual, bi-directional connections.

This paper presents a framework to mine and identify the areas of life and the way they are perceived, understood cognitively, and effectively using visualisation and machine learning. We provide an overview of the network of users including their activity and connections as well as zoom and details on demand of each individual areas of life. This research identifies the factors of each area of life which are significant on the user's social media profile in relation to information associated with each user such as time and location, including dynamic social behaviours. It aims to identify the key psychological factors and salient behaviours in order to find out the psychological factors of the user, and other overheads that can be portrayed in an image.

Xiplot is an HTML5-based system for interactive exploration of data and machine learning models. A key aspect is interaction, not only for the interactive plots but also between plots. Even though Xiplot is not restricted to any single application domain, we have developed and tested it with domain experts in quantum chemistry to study molecular interactions and regression models. Xiplot can be run both locally and online in a web browser (keeping the data local). The plots and data can also easily be exported and shared. A modular structure also makes Xiplot optimal for developing machine learning and new interaction methods.
