This article begins by tracing the evolution of data visualization from the fields of aesthetics to areas of creative practice, arguing that the emergence of big data presents creative potential for digital artists. Whereas conventional information visualization emphasizes the effective understanding of data, aesthetics considers the possibility that visualization can enhance the experience of data and support the acquisition of knowledge. In expressing an artistic intent or form, data-based creative practices synthesize and build upon techniques in communications and aesthetics. The article provides a review of recent digital art projects involving big data and suggests further directions for creative practice in an era of data proliferation.

As many other kinds of simulation experiments, simulations of computer networks tend to generate high volumes of output data. While the collection and the statistical processing of these data are challenges in and of themselves, creating meaningful visualizations from them is as much an art as it is a science. A sophisticated body of knowledge in information design and data visualization has been developed and continues to evolve. However, many of the visualizations created by the network simulation community tend to be less than optimal at creating compelling, informative narratives from experimental output data. The primary contribution of this paper is to explore some of the design dimensions in visualization and some advances in the field that are applicable to network simulation. We also discuss developments in the creation of the visualization subsystem in the Simulation Automation Framework for Experiments ( SAFE) in the context of best practices for data visualization.

data visualization offers librarians the ability to better manage, explore, and present information collected by various individuals throughout a library organization. This article discusses The Ohio State University Libraries experiments with Tableau, a sophisticated data visualization and rapid analytics software. Tableau allows librarians to blend and leverage data collected from a number of disparate sources, including transaction logs, Google Analytics, and e-resource usage reports. The article provides context for incorporating data visualization into the Ohio State University Libraries' assessment program and shares examples of visualizations created for two data analysis projects. The benefits of blending and simultaneously viewing visualizations of data from multiple sources are articulated and explored. The article concludes with a short discussion of potential future projects for visualizing library data using Tableau Desktop.

This work presents an improved interactive data visualization interface based on a mixture of the outcomes of dimensionality reduction (DR) methods. Broadly, it works as follows: The user can input the mixture weighting factors through a visual and intuitive interface with a primary-light-colors-based model (Red, Green, and Blue). By design, such a mixture is a weighted sum of the color tone. Additionally, the low-dimensional representation space produced by DR methods are graphically depicted using scatter plots powered via an interactive data-driven visualization. To do so, pairwise similarities are calculated and employed to define the graph to simultaneously be drawn over the scatter plot. Our interface enables the user to interactively combine DR methods by the human perception of color, while providing information about the structure of original data. Then, it makes the selection of a DR scheme more intuitive -even for non-expert users.

There are several numbers of diseases and conditions which contribute the progress of cognitive impairment and deterioration of cognitive functions compared to an individual norm. Currently, the causes and progression of cognitive impairment are poorly researched. This paper presents a system analysis of data including 152 patients and the results of their examination. Various machine learning models were used in the research, including classification and clustering algorithms. Methods of data preprocessing and dimension reduction were used for visualization. The result models have demonstrated the possibility of applying the latest artificial intelligence approaches for data analysis in the medical field. It was possible to achieve an accuracy of the cognitive impairment diagnosis in the initial stages of 75% despite the small data set.

In this paper, we determine associations between social media use and beliefs in conspiracy theories and misinformation among African American communities in Tuskegee County. We will study a high community with significant social problems. The primary goal of this work is to visualize how information ( both false and accurate) flows through social media, t raditional media, and social networks to influence decision-making in rural areas. The second goal is to examine how various other factors moderate this influence. We will e xamine the impacts of education, age, and other demographics, as well as measure Gigerenzer's concept of "risk literacy" which examines the accuracy of people's perceived notions of risk. We will develop our model based on data collected from in-person meetings and town halls, questionnaires, and other information collected to measure peoples' social media use, social networks, and their beliefs about issues such as the efficacy of COVID vaccines, their trust in the health care system, their beliefs about mental health.

In a world of 'Big data', data visualization allows the viewer to explore curated data;the creator to quickly convey complex information;and advocates to vividly display their view of a better world. Fields as disparate as journalism, environmental advocacy, and development assistance are taking advantage of these data-filled times. A similar movement can be described for the realm of human rights advocacy-although at a much smaller scale. Human rights advocates have been increasingly using data to better understand rights violations and to communicate their inot signndings and messages to targeted audiences, from the general public to policymakers and judicial bodies. While the use of data and visualization among human rights advocates is becoming more common, innovations are being taken up unevenly, and advocates admit that choices about approaches and techniques are largely based on anecdotal evidence. This article introduces the results of preliminary research into some of these questions that are the product of collaboration between researchers from a school of engineering and a school of law. It provides an initial assessment of the field, presenting the results of a study examining the use of data visualization and other visual features by Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch through content coding and expert interviews. It then offers the findings of two crowdsourced user studies into pressing questions in the visualization field which hold promise for human rights advocates seeking to communicate their messages through data visualization, and concludes by suggesting further areas for research.

The emerging creative practices of digital collections are increasing in prominence thanks to the access to, and appeal of, data visualizations. Interactive data visualizations, such as a map, timeline, chart, graph, or artist's rendering of data, enable users to pursue their own research interests within a collection and participate in new areas of research. Use of these data visualizations enhances the scope of the collection and enables a modern and diverse thematic collection to emerge. This article considers the question: Does the addition of data visualizations affect how users participate with a research collection? Impacts on collection development, application of user-centered design, and analysis of users' exploratory strategies are discussed. Examples of data visualizations used in digital humanities projects and digital collections are presented as case studies.
