Haptic technology refers to the technology that connects the user to a computerized system via the sense of touch by applying forces, vibrations and/or motions to the user. With this technology it is possible to measure and record haptic data generated directly as users interact with the system. Haptics can be seen as a mechanism to extract behavioral features that characterize a biometric profile for an identity authentication process. Generally, the haptic data captured during an individual interaction are very large (measured every few milliseconds) and with a high number of attributes (position, velocity, force, angular orientation of the end-effector and torque data, among others). Therefore, the behavioral haptic data that describe users are defined in terms of a large number of features, which adds complexity to the analysis. It is desirable to find a 3D virtual representation that shows the similarity of a user's haptic data during different trials, as well as the existing relationship among other users' features. In this paper, through this approach and with data collected from a multimodal system for signing a virtual cheque, interesting patterns and relationships, which are somewhat hidden in the original data, are described for individual authentication.

In this paper we analyze the role of physical scale models in the architectural design process and apply insights from architecture for the creation and use of data physicalizations. Based on a survey of the architecture literature on model making and ten interviews with practicing architects, we describe the role of physical models as a tool for exploration and communication. From these observations, we identify trends in the use of physical models in architecture, which have the potential to inform the design of data physicalizations. We identify four functions of architectural modeling that can be directly adapted for use in the process of building rich data models. Finally, we discuss how the visualization community can apply observations from architecture to the design of new data physicalizations.

Traditionally, understanding indoor space utilization in a typical design setting has been based on observation methodologies, where researchers document team interactions, space utilization and design activities using qualitative observation techniques. The authors of this paper propose a data mining driven methodology aimed at modeling the utilization of indoor design spaces using trajectory pattern data. Using indoor Radiofrequency identification (RFID) technology, researchers are able to collect trajectory data which can then be used to quantify the distribution of space usage patterns over time and predict future regions of interest. The proposed methodology consists of two phases: i) trajectory partitioning and ii) line segment clustering. For the first phase, trajectories are partitioned into line segments, based on unique user characteristics. In the second phase, a data mining clustering algorithm is employed to group line segments into different clusters based on a distance function. Since individual trajectories may exhibit similar movement patterns, the proposed methodology can help designers better understand how design spaces are utilized and how team dynamics evolve over time, depending on the specific design task being executed. A 3,500 square foot design space was used for the semester long study that included design teams supervised by teaching assistants. The results provide insight into the underutilization of certain regions of the design space and proposes directions towards an optimal design space methodology.

Isosurface extraction is the method of visualizing multivariate data in three-dimensional space. It is an important process to observe geometrical distribution of iso-value by isosurface extraction. data obtained by PIC (Particle In Cell) simulation have a characteristic of irregularly distributed volumetric scattered data. Unlike curved surfaces of implicit function, PIC simulation data cannot be represented by continuous function, and each points have no relationship. In such case, isosurface extraction algorithms do not guarantee crack-free surfaces on their results. This paper describes how we get smooth approximation of volumetric scattered data by using a natural neighbor interpolation, and extract a crack-free isosurface on interpolated data.

Designing and representing control algorithms is challenging in swarm robotics, where the collective swarm performance depends on interactions between robots and with their environment. The currently available modeling languages, such as UML, cannot fully express these interactions. We therefore propose a new, Behaviour-data Relations Modeling Language (BDRML), where robot behaviours and data that robots utilise, as well as relationships between them, are explicitly represented. This allows BDRML to express control algorithms where robots cooperate and share information with each other while interacting with the environment.

Open Government data (OGD) is data produced or commissioned by the government, which can be publicly published. These data can be accessed freely by anyone, in order to increase public participation and enable government agencies to report their performance transparently. Indonesia is one of many countries that has been applying open government data concept, by establishing Open Government Indonesia (OGI). With the establishment of the OGI, many Indonesian government agencies have developed open government data. However, many of them have low data quality. One standard that can assess open government data quality is Five Star Open data. This standard uses 5-step concept, with each data requires particular quality to achieve those steps. This paper proposed a solution to enhance the data quality of Indonesian government data and develop a data publishing tool. This data publishing tool accepts data with 2-star and 3-star quality and enhances the quality of input data to 5-star quality respectively. This tool also publishes the data and generates several types of data visualization according to the data. This tool uses data from Hasan Sadikin General Public Hospital (RSHS) as test data. Based on the evaluation conducted, this tool can enhance the data quality of five datasets, from 2-star to 5-star quality. In addition, the tool publishes the datasets and generates data visualization based on the datasets' contents.

Image-based morphometry of cells, tissues, and organs is an important topic in biomedical image analysis. We propose a novel method to characterize the morphological information that discriminates between two populations of morphological exemplars (cells, organs). We first demonstrate that the application of standard techniques such as Fisher linear discriminant analysis (FDA) can lead to undesirable errors in characterizing such information. We then describe an adaptation of the FDA technique that utilizes a least squares projection error to regularize the final solution. We show results comparing the FDA, modified FDA, and principal component analysis (PCA) techniques utilizing a contour-based characterization of both simulated and real images of cell nuclei.

We have developed software for an Electronic Medical Record (EMR) to be used by oncologists and researchers. It has rapid, structured data entry, visualization of clinical information and a searchable data base. Interactive, rules-based forms were designed for structured data entry. The web-based forms have been customized for the clinical staff who enter the data. The forms have been tested by oncologists and their office assistants. Modules have been added to upload images and add legends, metadata, and code classifications such as ICD and CPT. Other features include a search interface and a permission system that controls user access. Oncologists enter detailed information during a patient's visit to the clinic. The electronic forms capture diagnoses, stage and history, which includes social, family, and medical history. A time map provides a graphical summary of a patient's record. visualization of complex clinical information with intuitive navigation increases clarity while retaining the detail necessary for clinical information. Customized data entry forms and automatic coding speed the workflow. The system can potentially interface with multi-institutional data-sharing systems such as Cancer Bioinformatics Grid (CaBig).
