A course-based undergraduate research experience for bioinformatics education in undergraduate students

With rapid development of sequencing technology and the continuous accumulation of biological big data, people who are capable of using bioinformatic skills to analyze omics data and work out biological problems are urgently needed in the workforce, which highlights the importance of developing bioinformatics skills early in the undergraduate curriculum. Meanwhile, course-based undergraduate research experience (CURE) courses have been proved to be an effective teaching format that have many advantages over traditional labs and lectures. Here we introduced an implementation of CURE course of bioinformatics data analysis and visualization for undergraduate students in major of bioinformatics and evaluated the learning outcomes. We were able to address 10 out of 15 core competencies identified by Network for Integrating Bioinformatics into Life Sciences Education. Besides, results evaluated by Laboratory Course Assessment Survey demonstrated the goals of collaboration, discovery and relevance, and iteration were accomplished in our course. Meanwhile, a significant increase in scores of final examinations and a long-term improvement on students' research ability on bioinformatics data analysis and visualization were also observed. In summary, this CURE course is useful for undergraduate students learning related knowledge and participate in authentic research in the field of bioinformatics.

This paper presents a system for continuous vibration recording using sensors in a smartphone and the MATLAB Mobile application. The study aims to compare two different ways of measurement: using a mobile phone for this task and a specialized shock recorder typically used for sensitive transport monitoring. The obtained analyses will allow to determine the usefulness of the mobile devices or their application for wider use in transport monitoring applications without the need for investments in expensive sensing and acquisitions equipment as well as specialized software. By using a wireless device with communication to the cloud (Matlab cloud), the mobile phone becomes an IoT devise capable of measuring and sending the data for analysis in real-time to the companies headquarters as well as to the driver to inform him of the transport condition and eventual need for changing the speed of the car. © 2023 IEEE.

A pangenome captures the genomic diversity for a species, derived from a collection of genetic sequences of diverse populations. Advances in sequencing technologies have given rise to three primary methods for pangenome construction and analysis: de novo assembly and comparison, reference genome-based iterative assembly, and graph-based pangenome construction. Each method presents advantages and challenges in processing varying amounts and structures of DNA sequencing data. With the emergence of high-quality genome assemblies and advanced bioinformatic tools, the graph-based pangenome is emerging as an advanced reference for exploring the biological and functional implications of genetic variations.

Discrete Event Simulation-Based Evaluation of a Single-Lane Synchronized Dual-Traffic Light Intersections

This research involved an exploratory evaluation of the dynamics of vehicular traffic on a road network across two traffic light-controlled junctions. The study uses the case study of a one-kilometer road system modelled on Anylogic version 8.8.4. Anylogic is a multi-paradigm simulation tool that supports three main simulation methodologies: discrete event simulation, agent-based modeling, and system dynamics modeling. The system is used to evaluate the implication of stochastic time-based vehicle variables on the general efficiency of road use. Road use efficiency as reflected in this model is based on the percentage of entry vehicles to exit the model within a one-hour simulation period. The study deduced that for the model under review, an increase in entry point time delay has a domineering influence on the efficiency of road use far beyond any other consideration. This study therefore presents a novel approach that leverages Discrete Events Simulation to facilitate efficient road management with a focus on optimum road use efficiency. The study also determined that the inclusion of appropriate random parameters to reflect road use activities at critical event points in a simulation can help in the effective representation of authentic traffic models. The Anylogic simulation software leverages the Classic DEVS and Parallel DEVS formalisms to achieve these objectives.

The Design and Implementation of an Intelligent Education Prototype for an Electronic Systems Course

The rapid development of big data and artificial intelligence has brought impact on every aspect of people's lives. However, college students' education is still relatively traditional in that all students receive the same instruction, which hinders the improvement of students' performance. Students need more personalized teaching based on fast-developing technology. This paper introduces the design and implementation of an intelligent education prototype for an electronic systems course, and 89 students were given customized learning based on this prototype. The intelligent education prototype is based on the teaching platform to assist education. On the one hand, it provides students with various teaching resources. On the other hand, it makes statistical analysis based on the behavior data of students on the platform, so as to assist teachers in adjusting teaching strategies. To verify the effectiveness of our teaching method, we compared these students' final scores with the scores of other students who used traditional teaching methods. Student performance is assessed using examination results. The results indicate that the average score of the students who used the intelligent education prototype is 6.3 points higher than those who used the traditional teaching mode. The prototype proposed in this paper provides a reference for improving online education and is expected to positively influence the teaching of other courses in the future.

With the increasing number of students in colleges and universities, the employment rate of graduates has been attached great importance. Because of the impact of various external factors, such as social environment and epidemic situation, the employment opportunities of graduates have greatly increased, but the salary level of graduates has also changed due to the different internal and external conditions of graduates. This paper analyzes the influence of various factors on the employment salary of college graduates according to the attached data and the graduates' employment situation on the Internet, and gives suggestions for specific situations, so as to provide practical employment advice for the college students who are about to graduate.

This paper examines and analyses weather data in Oman to re-encode the appropriate climate dimension to generate solar energy. It also suggested prediction models that could accurately predict future weather information. The present study aims to help decision-makers take the necessary measures to address the demand for renewable energy generation and solutions to environmental problems by taking advantage of long daylight hours in Oman to increase the production of alternative and clean electricity. There is no doubt that different environmental factors such as temperature, humidity, wind intensity and rain have a significant impact on the amount of solar cells produced. However, accurate forecasting of temperature and humidity helps to select the best weather conditions that can help raise the generation of solar energy and reduce the cost of production, leading to an increase in the economic income of countries. This paper presents various mathematical prediction models based on a multi-boundary score (2, 3, 4), which has the value of the R-2 determination factor equal to (0.9335, 0.9603, 0.9977), respectively. The column test results (Prob > F) proved that the null hypothesis was accepted and rejected the alternative hypothesis. Thus, all the results are less than the significant value (0.5), and each variable has an average value or less than the mean value of the test (26). Therefore, there are no significant differences or unusual cases in historical temperature data in Oman from 1991 to 2015. Also, the prediction values corresponding to the actual temperature in the future, which helps to predict and analyze the temperature data at any time.

Creating a data representation is a common approach for efficient and effective data management and exploration. The compressed bitmap indexing is one of the emerging data representation used for large-scale data exploration. Performing sampling on the bitmap-indexing based data representation allows further reduction of storage overhead and be more flexible to meet the requirements of different applications. In this paper, we propose two approaches to solve two potential limitations when exploring and visualizing the data using sampling-based bitmap indexing data representation. First, we propose an adaptive sampling approach called information guided stratified sampling (IGStS) for creating compact sampled datasets that preserves the important characteristics of the raw data. Furthermore, we propose a novel data recovery approach to reconstruct the irregular subsampled dataset into a volume dataset with regular grid structure for qualitative post-hoc data exploration and visualization. The quantitative and visual efficacy of our proposed data sampling and recovery approaches are demonstrated through multiple experiments and applications.

Information visualization is the final process of any data analytics project, which gives an overall insight about the identified trends, patterns and anomalies. Efforts in data analysis become useless when we fail to convey the results effectively. Among visualization methods graphs play a vital role and are used frequently. This paper introduces "Roopana", a semi-automated platform for data visualization. It is capable of identifying the context of user data automatically, consider the purpose of data visualization (comparison, distribution, relationship, composition) and recommend the most accurate chart type to use. Considering chart types, "Roopana" is capable of proving recommendations from large number of charts. It then enables the use of less frequently used chart types, which are matching with data context and purpose of visualization. Further the system can alter the order of recommendations depending on user feedback enabling the most popular chart types to appear on top. Thus data scientists and developers can use "Roopana" to select most appropriate chart for their data without having an expert knowledge in the field of data visualization projects they are working on.

The global mining industry is focused on improving unit metal productivity and energy efficiency to fulfil increasing demand for natural resources. These are currently being impacted by the dramatic decrease in average grade of mine ore bodies. Lower head grades require greater comminution and grinding energy intensity to achieve the liberation target required for downstream processes. Size based Grade Engineering® aims to increase feed grades by removing low grade uneconomic material through screening prior to energy intensive grinding. Two size based strategies are assessed in an open cut Cu- porphyry deposit in the current study: preferential grade by size deportment and differential blasting for grade. The former refers to a natural based rock phenomena whereby a significant metal proportion preferentially deports into specific size fractions after breakage. Differential blasting aims to change blast product fragmentation to induce grade by size deportment through the exploitation of spatial grade heterogeneity. This characteristic relates the presence of high and low grade areas within a certain production volume originally assigned to a single processing destination based on its average grade. These size based separation drivers are subsequently exploited through a Grade Engineering circuit. This comprises a set of screens and crushers, with a configuration and operating settings defined a Grade Engineering recipe. While assessments at a strategic level indicate that application of size based Grade Engineering strategies are able to add significant value over the life of mine, the effective deployment of these techniques at production level present significant challenges to the standard operating philosophy. The additional operating flexibility driven by the ability of dynamically exploiting size based levers through the appropriate Grade Engineering recipe need to be properly managed.
