This article describes the novel datamap visualization technique which enables visualizing large datasets interactively and fairly, inspired by geographic maps and microscopes. The main contributions include introducing the datamap metaphor and datamap visualization architecture, specifying efficient methods of approximate rendering, and illustrating the basic concepts in terms of example applications.

In recent years, the Internet has become popular in various application fields so that a huge number of data records are generated and stored on the web. In this situation, we need any tool that helps us to analyze such multidimensional data for obtaining new findings from those data. In this paper, we introduce a visual and interactive analysis tool for multidimensional data called Time-tunnel. Time-tunnel visualizes any number of time series numerical data records as individual charts each of which is displayed on an individual rectangular plane called data-wing in a 3D virtual space. Through direct manipulations on a computer screen, the user easily puts more than two data-wings overlapped together to compare their charts in order to recognize the similarity or the difference among those data records. Simultaneously a radar chart among those data at any time point is displayed to recognize the similarity and the correlation among them. This time, the authors extended Time-tunnel to make it available on the web and this paper clarifies the usefulness of web-version Time-tunnel by showing practical analysis examples.

Probabilistic databases address well the requirements of an increasing number of modern applications that produce large collections of uncertain data. We propose probabilistic cardinality constraints as a principled tool for controlling the occurrences of data patterns in probabilistic databases. Our constraints help organizations balance their targets for different data quality dimensions, and infer probabilities on the number of query answers. These applications are unlocked by developing algorithms to reason efficiently about probabilistic cardinality constraints, and to help analysts acquire the marginal probability by which cardinality constraints hold in a given application domain. For this purpose, we overcome technical challenges to compute Armstrong PC-sketches as succinct data samples that perfectly visualize any given perceptions about these marginal probabilities.

Third-party Web tracking is a serious privacy issue. Advertisement sites and social networking sites stealthily collect users' Web browsing history for purposes such as targeted advertising or predicting trends. Unfortunately, very few Internet users realize this, and their privacy has been infringed upon because they have no means of recognizing the situation. In this paper we present the design and implementation of a system called MindYourPrivacy that visualizes third-party Web tracking and clarifies the entities threatening users' privacy. The implementation adopts deep packet inspection, DNS-SOA-record-based categorization, and HTTP-referred graphical analysis to visualize collectors of Web browsing histories without device dependency. To demonstrate the effectiveness of our proof-of-concept implementation, we conducted an experiment in an IT technology camp, where 129 attendees discussed IT technologies for four days, The experiment's results revealed that visualizing Web tracking effectively influences users' perception of privacy. Analysis of the user data we collected at the camp also revealed that MCODE clustering and some features derived from graph theory are useful for detecting advertising sites that potentially collect user information by Web tracking for their own purposes.

We present a novel collaborative visual analytics application for cognitively overloaded users in the astrophysics domain. The system was developed for scientists needing to analyze heterogeneous, complex data under time pressure, and then make predictions and time-critical decisions rapidly and correctly under a constant influx of changing data. The Sunfall data Taking system utilizes several novel visualization and analysis techniques to enable a team of geographically distributed domain specialists to effectively and remotely maneuver a custom-built instrument under challenging operational conditions. Sunfall data Taking has been in use for over eighteen months by a major international astrophysics collaboration (the largest data volume supernova search currently in operation), and has substantially improved the operational efficiency of its users. We describe the system design process by an interdisciplinary team, the system architecture, and the results of an informal usability evaluation of the production system by domain experts in the context of Endsley's three levels of situation awareness [1].

An approach based on open research knowledge graph for knowledge acquisition from scientific papers

PurposeThis paper aims to curate open research knowledge graph (ORKG) with papers related to ontology learning and define an approach using ORKG as a computer-assisted tool to organize key-insights extracted from research ***/methodology/approachAction research was used to explore, test and evaluate the use of the Open Research knowledge Graph as a computer assistant tool for knowledge acquisition from scientific *** extract, structure and describe research contributions, the granularity of information should be decided;to facilitate the comparison of scientific papers, one should design a common template that will be used to describe the state of the art of a ***/valueThis approach is currently used to document "food information engineering," "tabular data to knowledge graph matching" and "question answering" research problems and the "neurosymbolic AI" domain. More than 200 papers are ingested in ORKG. From these papers, more than 800 contributions are documented and these contributions are used to build over 100 comparison tables. At the end of this work, we found that ORKG is a valuable tool that can reduce the working curve of state-of-the-art research.

Computational and experimental sciences produce and collect everlarger and complex datasets, often in large-scale, multi-institution projects. The inability to gain insight into complex scientific phenomena using current software tools is a bottleneck facing virtually all endeavors of science. In this paper, we introduce Sunfall, a collaborative visual analytics system developed for the Nearby Supernova Factory, an international astrophysics experiment and the largest data volume supernova search currently in operation. Sunfall utilizes novel interactive visualization and analysis techniques to facilitate deeper scientific insight into complex, noisy, high-dimensional, high-volume, time-critical data. The system combines novel image processing algorithms, statistical analysis, and machine teaming with highly interactive visual interfaces to enable collaborative, user-driven scientific exploration of supemova image and spectral data. Sunfall is currently in operation at the Nearby Supernova Factory;it is the first visual analytics system in production use at a major astrophysics project.

Team creativity is a key resource for developing a successful product or service. Creativity support groupware was invented to elevate a team creativity by providing interactive data visualizations, stimulating creative ideas by applying creativity techniques, and breaking communication barriers over the geographic distances and the different time availabilities. Team characteristics, which are the traits of a team combined from the traits of individual members, have strong impacts to the team creativity through a groupware use. The team characteristics can be wisely adjusted for achieving a higher degree of team creativity. This study examined the impacts of team characteristics, i.e., the background knowledge, the difference of background knowledge, the friendship closeness, and the difference of friendship closeness among team members, to the team creativity. Based on the statistic of the 90 KJ charts constructed by 30 innovation teams supported by a KJ Method groupware, the best team formation for the highest team creativity performance consists of team members who have high background knowledge in problems under consideration, and have the same level of friendship regardless the amount of its level.

Computing Consistency Between Microarray data and Known Gene Regulation Relationships

Microarray experiments produce expression patterns for thousands of genes at once. On the other hand, biomedical literature contains large amounts of gene regulation relationship information accumulated over the years. One obvious requirement is an automated way of comparing microarray data with the collection of known gene regulation relationships. Such an automated comparison is imperative because it can help biologists rapidly understand the context of a given microarray experiment. In addition, the consistency measure can be used to either validate or refute the hypothesis being tested using the microarray experiment. In this paper we present a systematic way of examining the consistency between a given set of microarray data and known gene regulation relationships. We first introduce a simple gene regulation network model with two separate algorithms designed to isolate a maximally consistent network. Subsequently, we extend the model to take into account multiple regulating factors for a single gene while highlighting both consistencies and inconsistencies. We illustrate the effectiveness of our approach with two practical examples, one that picks the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR) pathway as highly consistent from multiple pathways of Kyoto encyclopedia of genes and genomes (KEGG), and another that isolates key regulatory relationships involving nfkb1 and others known for macrophage's counter response to inflammation.
