Dimensional and form inspections are key to the manufacturing and assembly of products. Product verification can involve a number of different measuring instruments operated using their dedicated software. Typically, each of these instruments with their associated software is more suitable for the verification of a pre-specified quality characteristic of the product than others. The number of different systems and software applications to perform a complete measurement of products and assemblies within a manufacturing organisation is therefore expected to be large. This number becomes even larger as advances in measurement technologies are made. The idea of a universal software application for any instrument still appears to be only a theoretical possibility. A need for information integration is apparent. In this paper, a design of an information system to consistently manage (store, search, retrieve, search, secure) measurement results from various instruments and software applications is introduced. Two of the main ideas underlying the proposed system include abstracting structures and formats of measurement files from the data so that complexity and compatibility between different approaches to measurement data modelling is avoided. Secondly, the information within a file is enriched with meta-information to facilitate its consistent storage and retrieval. To demonstrate the designed information system, a web application is implemented.

An approach to integration testing based on data flow specifications

Integration testing of programs based on formal specifications can benefit considerably from the comprehensibility of specifications. In this paper, we describe an approach to testing programs based on data-flow-oriented specifications by analyzing data flow paths and discussing criteria for test case generation. This approach suggests a specific way to generate test cases directly from formalized data flow diagrams and the associated textual specifications. We apply the approach in a case study of testing part of an ATM system to evaluate its effectiveness in fault detection and to uncover its weakness for further improvement.

Information processing to date between various participants and phases of construction is still often carried out verbally and through written communication on paper. The information exchange and processing through paper-based communication consumes substantial time. Due to increasing complexity of construction projects and the project management team setup, information processing and communication using information technology had become critical and essential for efficient project management and control. The inherent complexity of information flows in construction project has always posed the challenge for implementing standard information systems to cater to all the needs. It appears practically not feasible to develop and implement such systems for construction industry. In the present study, critical information flow common to all construction projects are evaluated and selected through a case study. An object-oriented information system model is developed for these selected processes using unified modeling language. The benefit of computerized information system is discussed and the model development by unified modeling language is compared with traditional structured modeling. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. ＜正＞ Managing and planning good software is not an easy task, as software estimation activities are concerned not only with time and effort scheduling, but also with specifying work activities, skill levels and scheduling of necessary resources. With duration, effort and other factors overlooked, poor reliability and functionality of software may occur. Furthermore, inaccurate estimation will lead to higher pressure for working team, poor quality of final system development, and higher cost for developing software. Due to these reasons, a software size model was constructed using a sample consisting of 122 student projects. All the collected student projects addressed transaction processing, data retrieval and reporting, and file maintenance *** were developed following the phases of system development life cycle and up to the expectations of the *** considered for constructing the software size model are directly extracted from data flow diagrams（DFDs） and data Dictionaries（DDs）. This model takes several advantages: （1） there tends to be fewer counting problems than other software metrics, because this model is based upon simple counts;（2） the predicted software projects were calibrated to specific local environments rather than being based upon industry weights;（3） basic size components can be identified easily at the early stage of the development life cycle;（4） the model provides clues to project designers in planning and scheduling the development of new software ***, our work shows that it is possible to develop simple and useful software predictions based on simple counts extracted from early stage of system development life cycle without recourse to complex analysis techniques. We conclude that our model can provide valuable ideas and supports for project designers in managing software activities.

Use cases are the favoured technique for defining the functional requirements of a software system, but their use implies that the desired functionality of the new system is well known. The aim of this work is to present an alternative technique-and a supporting tool-to accurately define this functionality, expressed as use cases, starting from the workflows that describe the end user work. The use of hypergraphs in the proposed algorithm of transformation reinforces the generation process. In addition, the technique is independent of the development paradigm and a variation in the algorithm allows obtaining data flow diagrams. (C) 2003 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

The mission operations directorate (MOD) at the Johnson Space Center (JSC) is responsible for the planning and operation of human space flight missions. MOD is being challenged with sustaining and developing new operations capabilities to support increasingly demanding requirements and to improve its processes to accomplish these missions at higher levels of safety, mission success, and effectiveness. Automation is being considered as an enabling technology to meet the aforementioned challenges. The synergistic combination of flight controllers and intelligent software providing the function of 'operations assistants' (OA) is being pursued as the key implementation of this technology in the Mission Control Center (MCC). The flight control team (FCT) assesses the condition and operability of the major systems such as electrical power, thermal control, life support, communications, altitude control, and data handling at MCC. OA assist the flight controllers with their tasks of monitoring the status and health of the flight systems. They also help maintain the flight controller's awareness of the operations being performed during the mission and help assure that operational objectives are being met. The station duty officer (SDO) performs the lead operations role for the International Space Station (ISS) during quiescent times when FCT and the flight director are off-duty. SDOs assess the condition and operability of the major ISS systems. This assessment involves monitoring and controlling several periodic processes on systems such as the electrical power, thermal control, life support, communications, altitude control, and data handling systems. The SDO is also responsible for coordinating operations with the Russian FCT. The OA will help the SDO maintain an awareness of all the processes performed on board and will assist with the responses to anomalous conditions. SOFL is a formal language and method for system specification and design. As a language it is an integration of Petri nets, data flow diagrams, and VDM-SL. As a method it is a combination of structured method and object-oriented method. In this paper we introduce a graphical user interface (GUI) for supporting the construction of SOFL specifications, and a tool for testing SOFL specifications. With those tools it would be easy to construct a SOFL specification that consists of Condition data flow diagrams, modules, and classes and to ensure its consistency and validity.

Modelling information flow during the conceptual and schematic stages of building design

This paper reports on recent research the aim of which was to study, model and simulate the information flow at the conceptual and schematic stages of building design. The development of a generic model of the conceptual and schematic design process for buildings is described. This model comprising design tasks and their information requirements was produced using data flow diagrams. Examples from several levels of the model are provided. Details are then given as to how the model may be used to assist the management of the design process both directly and by providing primary data for other tools and techniques. Industry feedback on the data modelling and these tools and techniques is then discussed. It is concluded that it is only by a better understanding of the flow of information among project participants that the management of design may be improved, and that although the generic data flow model provides immediate benefits to design managers these can be enhanced greatly by the use of the model as a primary data source for other tools and techniques including the design structure matrix and simulation.

Generating Prolog program and skeleton code from data flow diagrams

In this paper Lye propose a method for generating Prolog program code and skeleton C code from a specification of requirements written in DFDs (data flow Diagram) and DD (data Dictionary). This generation of code takes two transformation steps. The specification is transformed into a Prolog program and the transformed Prolog is used for generating skeleton C code so that the specification is directly expendable in the conventional programming environment. This work makes it possible to rapidly have a prototype by executing Prolog programs and remove the design stage from the software development life cycle. This has been implemented on UNIX workstation environment with a data flow diagram editor START system.

Integrating task and data flow analyses using the pentanalysis technique

Pentanalysis is a new method that allows the integration of task analysis with data flow analysis. This is novel and desirable as it provides one means by which a human-computer interaction orientated method can provide input to the requirements specification stage of the software life cycle. It bridges the gulf that exists between this stage and one major representation, data flow diagrams, commonly used in the software design stage. The method is described and a worked example is provided to illustrate it.
