The application of a digital computer to the control and monitoring of a proton linear accelerator

Preliminary design studies have been carried out on the control system for an 8OO-Mev proton linear accelerator based on the use of an on-line digital computer as the main controlling element. The accelerator system is divided into fifty-two subsections or modules. A module has complete control of all the equipment associated with it. Selected data and monitoring signals are transmitted on a time-shared basis to a central control computer. The functions which the computer performs in the control of the accelerator may be classified into Operational Control, Operational Supervision, and data Monitoring and Handling. The operator gives instructions to the computer through interrupt lines. Commands to the modules and displays for the operator time-share a common channel in the computer output system. Synchronization of the input and output data flow is controlled by the computer through a timing unit. A comparison has been made of the computer-based control system with a possible alternate system which does not use a computer. The computer replaces much of the control and data handling equipment required by the alternate system. As a result, the costs of the two systems are comparable. However, the computer-based system is preferable since it has many functional advantages over the alternate system. Copyright © 1965 — The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc.

Computational chemistry comprises one of the driving forces of High Performance computing. In particular, manybody methods, such as Coupled Cluster methods (CC) (Bartlett and Musial, 2007) of the quantum chemistry package NWCHEM (Valiev, ***., 2010), are of particular interest for the applied chemistry community. With the increase in scale, complexity, and heterogeneity of modern platforms, traditional programming models fail to deliver the expected performance scalability. On our way to Exascale, we believe that dataflow-based programming models - in contrast to the control flow model (e.g., as implemented in languages such as C) - may be the only viable way for achieving and maintaining computation at scale. In this paper, we discuss a dataflow-based programming model and its applicability to NWCHEM's CC methods. Our dataflow version of the CC kernels breaks down the algorithm into finer grained tasks with explicitly defined data dependencies. As a result, the serialization imposed by the traditional, linear algorithms can be transformed into parallelism, allowing the overall computation to scale to much larger computational resources. We build this experiment using the Parallel Runtime Scheduling and Execution Control (PARSEC) framework (Bosilca, ***., 2012) - a task-based dataflow-driven execution engine - that enables efficient task scheduling on distributed systems.

Heterogeneous systems are becoming increasingly popular for data processing. They improve performance of simple kernels applied to large amounts of data. However, sequential data loads may have negative impact. data parallel solutions such as Polymorphic Register Files (PRFs) can potentially accelerate applications by facilitating high speed, parallel access to performance-critical data. Furthermore, by PRF customization, specific data path features are exposed to the programmer in a very convenient way. PRFs allow additional control over the registers dimensions, and the number of elements which can be simultaneously accessed by computational units. This paper shows how PRFs can be integrated in dataflow computational platforms. In particular, starting from an annotated source code, we present a compiler-based methodology that automatically generates the customized PRFs and the enhanced computational kernels that efficiently exploit them.

In Romania, in the last decades, any plan of management concerning the environmental rehabilitation of the natural riverbeds has not been made. After the floods from 2004, 2005 and 2014 uncontrolled deposits of sediments have been recorded or, in contrary, in other places zones with erosion and uncontrolled coastal slides. As an immediate effect zones with risk for the local population, and not only, have appeared. The present paper estimates the capacity of transport of riverbeds in real conditions, based on local measurements registered during and after the floods. The model is tested for the Bistrita River, an area well-known for repeated floods, sometimes even in the same year. Near the watercourse, there are many locations, with a high population. The time variation of the liquid and solid phases discharged are directly connected with the sediment transport. In these conditions, the fine fractions from the material of the bed sediments are removed from its surface. Some of them become "armored" with the coarser part of the bed sediment. It is proposed a mathematical model to simulate the effect of both types of deposits, to study the surface of an open channel, with a movable bed. The entire alluvial stream, until the base rock, is considered with a small thickness so the non-uniformity of the grain size in vertical distribution from riverbed could be neglected. The boundary conditions in flood analysis consist in the upstream hydrograph and the stationary downstream water level. Knowing the flow rate and the water levels by direct measurements, there is possible to establish the risks zones, far away from the river borders. The primary purpose of this study is to minimize the effects of such uncontrolled floods, to detemine the risk zones and to present a solution for increasing the safety near the riverbed. Finally, some conclusion and references are mentioned.

The emergence of massively parallel architectures, along with the necessity of new parallel programming models, has revived the interest on dataflow programming due to its ability to express concurrency. Although dynamic dataflow programming can be considered as a flexible approach for the development of scalable applications, there are still some open problems in concern of their execution. In this paper, we propose a low-cost mapping methodology to map dynamic dataflow programs over any multi-core platform. Our approach finds interesting mapping solutions in few milliseconds that makes it doable at regular time by translating it in an equivalent graph partitioning problem. Consequently, a good load balancing over the targeted platform can be maintained even with such unpredictable applications. We conduct experiments across three MPEG video decoders, including one based on the new High Efficiency Video Coding standard. Those dataflow-based video decoders are executed on two different platform: A desktop multi-core processor, and an embedded platform composed of interconnected and tiny Very Long Instruction Word -style processors. Our entire design flow is based on open-source tools. We present the influence of the number of processors on the performance and show that our method obtains a maximum decoding rate for 16 processors.

The concept of "determinism" of parallel programs and parallel systems has received a lot of attention since the dawn of computing, with multiple proposals for formal and informal definitions of deterministic execution. In this paper, we present precise definitions of two related properties of program schemata - determinacy and repeatability. A key advantage of providing definitions for schemata rather than concrete programs is that it simplifies the task for programmers and tools to check these properties. The definitions of these properties are provided for schemata arising from data flow programs and task-parallel programs, thereby also establishing new relationships between the two models. Our hope is that these definitions will help provide a framework for enabling more precise definitions of determinism in future work.

The exploitation of high-performance architectures based on reconfigurable hardware to build power efficient supercomputing clusters is becoming more and more common. Indeed, large speedups have already been demonstrated in several high-performance computing (HPC) applications. On the other hand, partial reconfiguration (PR) has the potential to further increase performance and power efficiency in many applications;however, there is currently very limited support for transforming a traditional design into a reconfigurable one. In this work, we introduce a design methodology for PR designs that combines application analysis, partitioning, mapping and scheduling, and supports fast exploration of various design options. These steps are integrated in an automated toolchain which allows a designer to implement reconfigurable designs with simple guidance through a graphical interface. We demonstrate our approach by applying the methodology to an image processing application, implementing the proposed design on a Maxeler MaxWorkstation.

dataflow process networks lead to different theoretical model approaches and have demonstrated their adequacy in data-dominated intensive systems, namely Synchronous dataflows. Since their appearance, dataflow models became too focused and specialized in their target applications. The paper presents a set of translating mechanisms allowing the mapping from dataflow models into Petri nets. This mapping allows taking advantage of Petri nets well-known properties verification capabilities and enriching dataflow models concerning scheduler information and resource allocation. This allows one to find out some hidden embedded features (model semantics and syntax) not normally addressed in dataflow analysis tools, which is briefly characterized. dataflow model translation into Petri net domain give support to attain the required resource allocation under dataflow static scheduling list. This scheme allows one to make conclusion in Petri net domain to be applied in dataflow models to foresee the necessary amount of storage resources for each arc. An application example is used to illustrate the concept and effectiveness of the outlined approach.
