Impact of "An Applicable Family of data flow testing Criteria"

We investigate the impact that the paper "An applicable family of data flow testing criteria" has had since it was published in 1988. We contrast its impact with that of an earlier paper, "Selecting software test data using data flow information" which introduced the family of data flow testing criteria and a new formal way of comparing testing criteria. We conclude that while the 1988 paper undoubtedly had a significant impact on the software testing research and practitioner communities, the earlier "Selecting software test data using data flow information" paper had significantly greater impact.

We propose an approach to perform data flow testing of feature-oriented programs. In our approach, we use a data flow model to represent flow of data across the mixin layers and classes. The model is represented as a control flow graph named composed control flow graph (CCFG). The CCFG depicts flow of control between various program statements. Then, we define different levels of testing to test a feature-oriented program inside a mixin layer and across mixin layers. Then, we compute def-use pairs for each variable in the program and design test cases randomly to exercise each def-use pair.

The functionality of most programs is delivered in terms of data. The values are somehow received by variables, which represent data and these values are used in computation of values for other variables. data flow testing focuses on variable definition and variable usage. One of the fastest growing and most wide-spread application domains is the web application domain. The wide acceptance of Internet Technology requires sophisticated and high quality web applications. There are some sorts of entry forms that are provided by many web pages. These web pages require the user to supply input to the forms and click on the button or image. Sometimes, this program (commonly known as CGI program) is just an interface to an existing database, massaging user input into a database understandable format and massaging the database's output into the web browser understandable format (usually HTML). In this paper, we propose a technique for data flow testing of CGI programs that are written in Perl. We first propose a data flow model and compute definition-use chains. Then, we identify the paths to be exercised for each of these definition-use pairs.

Service computing has increasingly been adopted by the industry, developing business applications by means of orchestration and choreography. Choreography specifies how services collaborate with one another by defining, say, the message exchange, rather than via the process flow as in the case of orchestration. Messages sent from one service to another may require the use of different XPaths to manipulate or extract message contents. Mismatches in XML manipulations through XPaths (such as to relate incoming and outgoing messages in choreography specifications) may result in failures. In this paper, we propose to associate XPath Rewriting Graphs (XRGs), a structure that relates XPath and XML schema, with actions of choreography applications that are skeletally modeled as labeled transition systems. We develop the notion of XRG patterns to capture how different XRGs are related even though they may refer to different XML schemas or their tags. By applying XRG patterns, we successfully identify new data flow associations in choreography applications and develop new data flow testing criteria. Finally, we report an empirical case study that evaluates our techniques. The result shows our techniques are promising in detecting failures in choreography applications.

Programmable logic controllers (PLCs) are broadly used in the safety-critical industrial field, which requires high reliability to avoid catastrophes. data flow testing (DFT) focuses on data flow relationships in a program and has a stronger fault-detection ability than other control flow-based testing. However, there is no automated testing tool supporting DFT for PLC programs. Hence, we propose an automated data flow testing framework for PLC programs. Our DFT framework is based on dynamic symbolic execution (DSE). Considering the cyclic execution feature of PLC programs, our approach needs reachable states which can be provided by branch testing. Besides, our approach improves testing performance through a novel guided path search algorithm. Furthermore, we evaluate our approach on several programs to demonstrate that this approach is practical and effective.

In recent years, Web applications have grown rapidly because of their abilities to provide online information access to anyone at anytime around the world. As Web applications become complex, there is a growing concern about their quality and reliability. This paper extends traditional data flow testing techniques to Web applications. Several data how issues about analyzing HyperText Markup Language (HTML) documents in Web applications are discussed. An object-based data how testing approach is presented. The approach is based on a test model that captures data flow test artifacts of Web applications. In the test model, each entity of a Web application is modeled as an object. The data flow information of the functions within an object or across objects is then captured using various flow graphs. Based on the object-based test model, data Row test cases for a Web application can be systematically and selectively generated in five different levels.

Experience is provided about the cost and effectiveness of the Rapps-Weyuker data flow testing criteria. This experience is based on studies using a suite of well-known numerical programs, and supplements an earlier study using different types of programs. The conclusions drawn in the earlier study involving cost are confirmed in this study. New observations about tester variability and cost assessment, as well as fault detection, are also provided.

Test-Case Generation for data flow testing of Smart Contracts Based on Improved Genetic Algorithm

Smart contracts are commonly deployed for safety-critical applications, the quality assurance of which has been a vital factor. Test cases are standard means to ensure the correctness of data flows in smart contracts. To more efficiently generate test cases with high coverage, we propose an improved genetic algorithm-based test-case generation approach for smart contract data flow testing. Our approach introduces the theory of particle swarm optimization into the genetic algorithm, which reduces the influence brought by the randomness of genetic operations and enhances its capability to find global optima. A set of 30 real smart contracts deployed on Ethereum and GitHub is collected to perform the experimental study, on which our approach is compared with three baseline approaches. The experimental results show that, in most cases, the coverage of the test cases generated by our approach is significantly higher than the baseline approaches with relatively lower numbers of iterations and lower execution time.

Meta-heuristic Artificial Bee Colony Algorithm finds its applications in the optimization of numerical problems. The intelligent searching behaviour of honey bees forms the base of this algorithm. The Artificial Bee Colony Algorithm is responsible for performing a global search along with a local search. One of the major usage areas of Artificial Bee Colony Algorithm is software testing, such as in structural testing and test suite optimization. The implementation of Artificial Bee Colony Algorithm in the field of data flow testing is still unexplored. In data flow testing, the definition-use paths which are not definition-clear paths are the potential trouble spots. The main aim of this paper is to present a simple and novel algorithm by making use of artificial bee colony algorithm in the field of data flow testing to find out and prioritize the definition-use paths which are not definition-clear paths.

Software testing is one of the most important phases of software development lifecycle. Software testing can be categorized into two major types;white box testing and black box testing. data flow testing is a white box testing technique that uses both flow of control and flow of data through the program for testing. Evolutionary testing selects and generates test data by applying optimizing search techniques. This paper discusses the architecture and implementation of an automated tool for data flow testing by applying genetic algorithm for the automatic generation of test paths for data flow testing based on selected criteria for data flow testing. Our tool generates random initial population of test paths and then based on the selected data flow testing criteria new paths are generated by applying a genetic algorithm. A fitness function in tool evaluates each chromosome ( path) based on the selected data flow testing criteria and computes its fitness. We have applied one point crossover and mutation operators for the generation of new paths based on fitness value. The proposed research tool called ETODF is continuation of our previous research work [6] on data flow testing using evolutionary approaches. The tool ETODF ( evolutionary testing of data flow) has been implemented in Java. In experiments with this tool, our implemented tool has much better results as compared to random testing.
