In this work, we utilize multi-hop data fragmentation in energy harvesting wireless sensor networks (EHWSN) for improved security and routing.(1) data fragmentation is a secure data management and data provisioning technique used in unattended sensor networks. However, it compromises energy efficiency for better protection, possibly decreasing the lifetime of a traditional sensor network. Instead, it has potentials to be used in EHWSN, which allows better energy utilization for each sensor node while security of sensed data remains an important factor. In our work, we consider how data fragmentation can be applied in EHWSN, and propose a multi-hop data fragmentation method suitable for EHWSN.

At present, the demand for information in distributed database systems is large and growing day by day. While this is happening, new challenges arise to improve the performance of the databases. data fragmentation and replication methods have a leading role in distributed systems over the cloud, which is why this paper presents the design of a horizontal fragmentation, allocation and replication method in the cloud. This research proposes an algorithm for solving the problem of overlapping horizontal fragments in a data fragmentation and replication method in the cloud. The design of a Web application using the aforementioned method is also presented, this allows the fragmentation, assignment and replication scheme proposed by the method to be directly applied on a distributed database.

Delivery ratio of large file transmission in opportunistic networks is low for the characteristics of opportunistic networks. In order to improve the ability of transferring large files, a kind of data fragmentation strategy is proposed in this paper: self-adaptive data fragmentation (SADF). The size of data fragment in SADF is based on historical statistic transmission rate and historical statistic connection duration between communicating nodes. The SADF strategy makes full use of current networking connection, minimizing the overhead caused by fragmentation control information. Simulation results show that the proposed fragmentation strategies can improve delivery ratio of large file greatly.

data fragmentation and replication are an essential issue in cloud databases, since information demands are huge and improving performance through distributed database design techniques is a necessity. This paper aims to provide a review of the literature about data fragmentation and replication methods applied in a cloud environment in the last eight years, to determine if the methods take into account both techniques (fragmentation and replication) together, consider a cloud database, are easy to implement, are focused on improving the performance of the database, are complete (i.e., the paper includes all the necessary information to implement the method), and if they provide a cost model. To meet this objective we analyzed and classified 83 papers concerning data fragmentation and replication techniques. Finally, we selected the best method of our comparative analysis and presented an architecture of a web application for data fragmentation and replication in the cloud based on such method.

This thesis presents a novel security system developed for a multi-channel communication architecture, which achieves security by distributing the message and its associated message authentication code across the available channels at the bit level, to support systems that require protection from confidentiality and integrity attacks without relying solely on traditional encryption. One contribution of the work is to establish some helpful terminology, present a basic theory for multi-channel communications, describe the services provided by an optimal system, and then implement a proof of concept system to demonstrate the concept's validity. This proof of concept, focused on the splitting and recombination activities, operates by using existing key exchange mechanisms to establish system initialization information, and then splitting the message in fragments across each available channel. Splitting prevents the entirety of a given message from being transmitted across a single channel, and spreads the overall message authentication across the set of channels. This gives the end user the following unique service: the sender and receiver can identify a compromised channel, even in the presence of a sophisticated man in the middle attack wherein the adversary achieves fragment acceptance at the destination by altering the message's error detecting code. Under some conditions, the receiver can recover the original message without retransmission, despite these injected errors. The resulting system may be attractive for critical infrastructure communications systems as a holistic approach to both availability and a defense against integrity attacks. This system would be a natural fit as a cipher suite for a future iteration of the Transport Layer Security protocol targeting support for multi-channel communication systems.

Mitigating data fragmentation for small file accesses

In traditional file systems, data clustering and grouping have improved small file performance. These schemes make it possible for file systems to use large data transfers in accessing small files, reducing disk I/Os. However, as file systems age, disks become too fragmented to support the grouping and clustering. To offer a solution to this problem, we describe a De-Fragmented File System (DFFS), which gradually alleviates fragmentation of small files. By using data cached in memory, DFFS dynamically relocates blocks of small fragmented files, clustering them on the disks contiguously. In addition, DFFS relocates small related files in the same directory, grouping them at contiguous disk locations.

Effective data fragmentation is essential in enhancing the performance of distributed database management systems (DDBMS) by strategically dividing extensive databases into smaller fragments distributed across multiple nodes. This study emphasizes horizontal fragmentation and introduces an advanced machine learning algorithm, Red Fox Optimization-based Support Vector Machine (RFO-SVM), designed for optimizing the data fragmentation process. The input database undergoes meticulous pre-processing to address missing data concerns, followed by analysis through RFO-SVM. This algorithm efficiently classifies features and target labels based on class labels. The RFO algorithm optimizes critical SVM parameters, including the kernel, kernel parameter, and boundary parameter, leveraging the accuracy metric. The resulting classified data serves as fragments for the fragmentation process. To ensure precision in fragmentation, a Genetic Algorithm (GA) allocates these fragments to diverse nodes within the DDBMS, optimizing the total allocation cost as the fitness function. The proposed model, implemented in Python, significantly contributes to the efficient fragmentation and allocation of databases in distributed systems, thereby enhancing overall performance and scalability.

data fragmentation is one of the primary techniques that has been used in partitioning and developing distributed database systems (DDBs). database partitioning technique improves the performance of the system throughput and reduces the amount of irrelevant data to be accessed and transferred among different sites in DDBs. We propose a technique that splits the database relations into pair-wise disjoint fragments, which would be allocated to the DDBs sites during the process of allocation. This technique reduces the data transferred between the sites during the applications execution, minimizes the communication cost needed for processing applications, handles the database queries and meets their future needs, guarantees the ability of processing a given portion of a given transaction in all sites, and improves the applications speed and efficiency by minimizing the number of fragments to be accessed. We have also developed a fragmentation tool that is interactive, full functional and easy to use, based on our fragmentation life cycle algorithms to create the database segments and generate the minimum number of disjoint fragments. A case study and some results in tabular and graphical means will be presented to demonstrate the efficiency of the method.

The advancements in virtualisation and distributed computing have allowed the cloud paradigm to become very popular among users and resources. It allows companies to save costs on infrastructure and maintenance and to focus on the development of products. However, this fast-growing paradigm has brought along some concerns from users, such as the integrity and security of the data, particularly in environments where users rely entirely on providers to secure their data. This paper explores different techniques to fragment data on the cloud and prevent direct unauthorised access to the data. It explores their performance on a cloud instance, where the total time to perform the operation, including the upload and download of the data, is considered. Results from this experiment indicate that fragmentation algorithms show better performance compared to encryption. Moreover, when combining encryption with fragmentation, there is an increase in the security, with the trade-off of the performance.
