Cloud computing, supported by advancements in virtualisation and distributed computing, became the default options for implementing the IT infrastructure of organisations. Medical data and in particular medical images have increasing storage space and remote access requirements. Cloud computing satisfies these requirements but unclear safeguards on data security can expose sensitive data to possible attacks. Furthermore, recent changes in legislation imposed additional security constraints in technology to ensure the privacy of individuals and the integrity of data when stored in the cloud. In contrast with this trend, current data security methods, based on encryption, create an additional overhead to the performance, and often they are not allowed in public cloud servers. Hence, this paper proposes a mechanism that combines data fragmentation to protect medical images on the public cloud servers, and a NoSQL database to secure an efficient organisation of such data. Results of this paper indicate that the latency of the proposed method is significantly lower if compared with AES, one of the most adopted data encryption mechanisms. Therefore, the proposed method is an optimal trade-off in environments with low latency requirements or limited resources.

In this paper, we study and analyze data fragment placement techniques to exploit their problems and design an energy-aware fragment placement method in Unattended Wireless Sensor Networks (UWSN). In UWSN, the survivability of data is of utmost importance because sensed data cannot be immediately transmitted and must reside in the storage of sensor nodes for extended periods of time. The data, which have delay-tolerant characteristics, can be exploited by attackers that access the storage to erase or steal the data. Even though data fragmentation methods have been designed to solve this problem, these works do not consider a critical issue of where to place data fragments in the sensor network. In this work, we show that basic existing methods of data fragment placement have some problems, especially in terms of energy efficiency and data survival probability. Based on our analysis, we propose a lightweight method that allows us to efficiently select sensor nodes that are used to safely distribute and place data fragments. We show through simulation and preliminary testbed analysis that our proposed method can improve the overall performance of data fragmentation.

data deduplication is a lossless compression technology that replaces the redundant data chunks with pointers pointing to the already-stored ones. Due to this intrinsic data elimination feature, the deduplication commodity would de-linearize the data placement and force the data chunks that belong to the same data object to be divided into multiple separate parts. In our preliminary study, it is found that the de-linearization of the data placement would weaken the data spatial locality that is used for improving data read performance, deduplication throughput and efficiency in some deduplication approaches, which significantly affects the deduplication performance. In this paper, we first analyze the negative effect of the de-linearization of data placement to the data deduplication performance with some examples and experimental evidences, and then propose an effective approach to reduce the de-linearization of data placement by sacrificing little compression ratios. The experimental evaluation driven by the real world datasets shows that our proposed approach effectively reduces the de-linearization of the data placement and enhances the data spatial locality, which significantly improves the deduplication performances including deduplication throughput, deduplication efficiency and data read performance, while at the cost of little compression ratios.

data fragmentation in flash SSDs is a common problem that leads to performance degradation, especially when the underlying storage devices become aged by heavily updating workloads. This paper addresses that problem in MongoDB, a popular document storage in the current market, by introducing a novel stream mapping scheme that based on unique characteristics of MongoDB. The proposal method has low overhead and independent with data models and workloads. We use YCSB and Linkbench with various cache sizes and workloads to evaluate our proposal approaches. Empirical results shown that in YCSB and Linkbench, our methods improved the throughput by more than 44% and 43.73% respectively;reduced 99th-percentile latency by up to 29% and 24.67% in YCSB and Linkbench respectively. In addition, by tuning the leaf page size in B+Tree of MongoDB, we can significantly improve the throughput by 3.37x and 2.14x in YCSB and Linkbench respectively.

Combining data sources from NoSQL and SQL systems leads to data distribution and complexifies user queries: data is distributed among different stores having different data models. This data implementation complexifies the writing of user queries. This work proposes a querying framework of a polystore with the use of unified models as a user vision of the polystore. Unified models hides the variety of data models and data distribution to the user. Our solution uses the Entity-Relationship model of the polystore to infer unified models and to identify intermediate required operations to fulfill querying on real polystore. Using these required transformations, a rewriting framework allows to automatically rewrite the user query (against the unified model) with respect to the real data distribution over the polystore. We apply this framework with one dataset (UniBench benchmark) between a relational, a document-oriented and a graph-oriented databases. We illustrate in this work performance and the low impact of our query rewriting solution when compared to query execution time.

Securing big data is among the major challenges for information suppliers. With the continuous development of information technology and college education informatization, there's a lot of data produced in the course of teaching activities. However, in the early stage of informationization construction, a lack of experience in top-level design (or frame) leads to the phenomenon of "information isolated islands" and fragmentation of data. Nowadays an increasing amount of data is produced, the produced data is difficult to be analyzed, either it cannot be shared interactively nor be used efficiently. Furthermore, such problems are becoming more and more serious. To solve such problems, the authors enumerate the modes of fragmented data integration in this paper. In addition, taking the mode of building a data sharing platform as an example, the authors propose a specific plan for fragmented data integration in colleges and universities to bring inspiration.

This study investigates the effect of temporal event localization of speech-imagery in electroencephalogram (EEG) signals. Temporal event localization is required for speech-imagery EEG signals as they are often recorded over long segments with the actual event being a fraction of the recorded duration. It is achieved by fragmenting the EEG epochs into smaller components and identifying those fragments from different signals that are common to the same class. After extracting these fragments and merging them into a new set of signals, they are validated using a set of classifiers. The results show a significant improvement in the classifier performance when compared to using signals without fragmentation. Extracting these fragments would also allow for extracting features of syllables (and eventually, phonemes), as the same algorithm used to fragment the signals may be used to extract features of those word components.

One approach to leverage scalable systems for RDF management is partitioning large datasets across distributed servers. In this paper we consider workload data, given in the form of query patterns and their frequencies, for determining how to partition RDF datasets. Our experimental study shows that our workload-aware method is an effective way to cluster related data and provides better query response times compared to an elementary fragmentation method.

Memory-Access Optimization of Parallel Molecular Dynamics Simulation via Dynamic data Reordering

Dynamic irregular applications such as molecular dynamics (MD) simulation often suffer considerable performance deterioration during execution. To address this problem, an optimal data-reordering schedule has been developed for runtime memory-access optimization of MD simulations on parallel computers. Analysis of the memory-access penalty during MD simulations shows that the performance improvement from computation and data reordering degrades gradually as data translation lookaside buffer misses increase. We have also found correlations between the performance degradation with physical properties such as the simulated temperature, as well as with computational parameters such as the spatial-decomposition granularity. Based on a performance model and pre-profiling of data fragmentation behaviors, we have developed an optimal runtime data-reordering schedule, thereby archiving speedup of 1.35, 1.36 and 1.28, respectively, for MD simulations of silica at temperatures 300 K, 3,000 K and 6,000 K.
