AUTOMATIC COMPUTER CONTROL OF MANUFACTURE OF THIN-FILM OPTICAL-DEVICES

This paper describes a project to investigate the feasibility of using a small digital computer to automatically control the manufacture of multilayer thin film optical interference devices. The manufacturing process and the computer control systems are described in detail and the results from a particular case study are presented. These results relate to the manufacture of a 5-layer antireflectance coating. The computer is shown to be able to control the process with precision and to have the potential for manufacturing devices toa consistent high quality.

After discussing the current status of the autonomation in signal interpretation from seismic networks, a new approach, based on artificial-intelligence tecniques, is proposed. The knowledge of the human expert analyst is examined, with emphasis on its objects, strategies and reasoning techniques. It is argued that knowledge-based systems (or expert systems) provide the most appropriate tools for designing an automatic system, modelled on the expert behaviour.

An algorithm based on the direct search of parameter optimization without evaluating derivatives is discussed. It consists of a slightly modified version of the Hooke and Jeeves method, optimized in velocity, in order to give quick rensponses also on personal computers. In the present work it has been applied to the minimization of a sum of squares, common case in data fitting. An application to Mössbauer spectroscopy is presented

A procedure for forecasting and, more in general, for making statistical inference about the degree of predictability of dynamical systems given by experimental time series is presented. A parametric time series modelling approach is taken, yielding a powerful technique for analysing the structure of a given signal. The approach we propose consists in fitting autoregressive processes to the data and forecasting future values of the system on the basis of the model selected. We distinguish between two possible forecasting techniques of a dynamical system given by experimental series of observations. The <> views the observations as a realization of a stochastic process, the autoregression coefficients are estimated by best-fitting the model to all the data at once. The <> views the observations as realizations of a truly deterministic process and the autoregression coefficients are continuously updated by using the nearest neighbours of the current state. Then, a proper comparison between the predictive skills of the two techniques allows us to gain insight into distinguishing low-dimenisional chaos from randomness. The global procedure also gives adaptive spectral filters (all-poles filters) which are able to pick the dominant oscillations of the system. As an example of the application of the procedure the author considers the Henon map and stochastic processes as well (autoregressive moving average processes). The effects of additional noise (e.g. measurement errors) are also discussed.

CRITICAL COMPARISON OF KRIGING AND OBJECTIVE ANALYSIS

Equicontour-line maps are often used in the reconstruction and in the graphic display of environmental phenomena. Effective and reliable interpolator tools are required to do this in the best objective manner. The stochastic-interpolation procedure based on the kriging technique satisfied this requirement and it is mostly applied to geological and hydrological problems. Along with the equicontour-plot map, the map of the standard deviation sigma is given and provides the degree of reliability of the variable field reconstructed. A similar interpolation procedure, commonly used in meteorological-oceanographical fields, is called objective analysis. Both methods objectively reproduce the event under study, based upon two principal statistical hypotheses: the covariance of experimental data (variogram) and the trend of the occurrence. In this paper the two techniques are compared, either in their theoretical development, or in their application to the two different experimental data (geological and oceanographic). From the discussion which follows it can be concluded that the two methods are substantially identical. The objective analysis shows however more generality because it could be applied to time-dependent fields.

A method is discussed for the fitting of experimental curves in cases in which a scale factor on the vertical axis can be omitted. It consists of maximizing the correlation coefficient between curve and fitting function. A relationship between chi-square and correlation coefficient is obtained, which shows the equivalence between least square and correlation methods. This relationship, moreover, allows us to utilize the chi-square reliability test when the correlation coefficient is found. An exemplifying application to Mössbauer spectroscopy is presented

MATERIALS ENGINEERING FOR OPTOELECTRONIC CRYSTALS RELATED TO III-V COMPOUNDS

An introductory glimpse of modern approaches to the application of productive and reasonable techniques for the defined electronic materials will be presented. The paper is divided into four parts. Each is supplemented with illustrations. The first part explains the meaning of materials engineering for electronics (MEE) and for optoelectronic crystals in particular. its interdisciplinarity is shown and also the range of problems it can solve. Graduate courses of some MEE disciplines are also given. The second part of the paper related to the feasible solution with MEE as to the optimal realization of the application requirements. The physical modelling, databases and characterization techniques are given. The third part deals with particular materials: III-V semiconductors. A brief survey of the best methods of crystal growth is given, stressing those which imply a possibility of creating crystals defined up to the atomic range. The last part is devoted to our team's original crystal growth methods: CAM-S (A Crystallization Method Providing Composition Autocontrol in Situ) and COM-S (Calculation Method of Optimal Molten-Solution Composition). The combination of these methods, further modified with vibrational and magneto-hydrodinamical stirring (VS, MHD-S), allows us to grow crystalline ingots of ternary solid solutions (TSS) possessing extreme homogeneity. Illustrations on In-Ga-Sb system are supplied. We conclude with a discussion of the impact of such methods and approaches on a device quality and to other fields.
