Scenario-oriented data interoperability: maximising the connection between data and users in collaboration environments

In large-scale collaborative environments, data interoperability faces challenges due to varying data standards, differences in time and space, and rising demands for data services. Traditional methods focus on integrating resources but often miss the need for interoperability between users and data. This research introduces a new approach to data interoperability, which emphasises scenario-based strategies. We use topic analysis and context fusion to handle industry-specific terminology, making it easier for users to understand cross-speciality data. Our approach includes a concept-extended metamodel to address business logic differences and connect data with user scenarios. We tested our model in a railway company and found it effective and useful based on survey feedback.

Following the proposal by Tsafnat et al (2024) to converge on three open health data standards, this viewpoint offers a critical reflection on their proposed alignment of openEHR, Fast Health interoperability Resources (FHIR), and Observational Medical Outcomes Partnership (OMOP) as default data standards for clinical care and administration, data exchange, and longitudinal analysis, respectively. We argue that open standards are a necessary but not sufficient condition to achieve health data interoperability. The ecosystem of open-source software needs to be considered when choosing an appropriate standard for a given context. We discuss two specific contexts, namely standardization of (1) health data for federated learning, and (2) health data sharing in low- and middle-income countries. Specific design principles, practical considerations, and implementation choices for these two contexts are described, based on ongoing work in both areas. In the case of federated learning, we observe convergence toward OMOP and FHIR, where the two standards can effectively be used side-by-side given the availability of mediators between the two. In the case of health information exchanges in low and middle-income countries, we see a strong convergence toward FHIR as the primary standard. Integrating Chipless RFID Technology to Provide Seamless data interoperability for Textile Industry Circularity

The textile industry faces tremendous challenges when it comes to waste management and recycling. The current methods for textile companies and drop-off centres for sorting the textiles for recycling is largely through manual labour, which is inefficient and involves high costs. The bottleneck due to slow process for visual inspection creates bottlenecks for effective sorting. One idea to solve this problem is to use an embedded data mechanism in textile tags via radio frequency identification (RFID) chips. Considering the requirements of recycling processes, there is an essential need for RFID technologies which are compatible with recyclability of textile processes. Therefore, the need and demand for a sustainable solution for traceability and recycling via chipless RFID technologies is highly motivated. Moreover, the technology should be economically viable for industries for adoption. This study explores a new technological concept that offers a solution for the current problem of creating a circular economy in the textile industry with traceability of data. So, the study focuses on analysing how chipless RFID technology may be integrated into textiles with 3D printing technology. The research investigates 3D printing technology for providing the ability to create a fast, inexpensive, and detailed chipless RFID labelling solution for textile materials. Finally, the paper investigates the consumer populations readiness to adopt the technology by identifying pain points and outlining the integration of this technology into the textile industry.

This poster provides an overview of an initial effort to examine the development of data interoperability from an infrastructural perspective applied to two geoscience examples, the International Geosample Number (IGSN) and EarthCube. Both activities represent efforts to develop data interoperability as part of computer supported cooperative work. In the case of the IGSN, the data interoperability provided by the cyberinfrastructure is arguably reaching the point of becoming a substrate for scientists. In the case of EarthCube, data interoperability through the envisaged cyberinfrastructure remains elusive. Recent themes in CSCW literature examine questions of infrastructure and infrastructuring [17]. A goal of this poster is to illustrate the potential to use analysis of geoscience infrastructure to add to these discussions. The relevance of data interoperability is significant given the large amounts of funding and effort being put towards this goal and the potential for data interoperability to foster new scientific insights. Finally, examining this topic is even more salient given the recent emphasis on "FAIR data."

Biomedical discovery is fraught with challenges stemming from diverse data types and siloed analysis. In this study, we explored common biomedical data tasks and pain points that could be addressed to elevate data quality, enhance sharing, streamline analysis, and foster collaboration across stakeholders. We recruited fifteen professionals from various biomedical roles and industries to participate in sixty-minute semi-structured interviews, which involved an assessment of their challenges, needs, and tasks as well as a brainstorm exercise to validate each professional's research process. We applied a qualitative analysis of individual interviews using an inductive-deductive thematic coding approach for emerging themes. We identified a common set of challenges related to procuring and validating data, applying new analysis techniques and navigating varied computational environments, distributing results effectively and reproducibly, and managing the flow of data across phases of the data lifecycle. Our findings emphasize the importance of secure data sharing and facilities for collaboration throughout the discovery process. Our identified pain points provide researchers with an opportunity to align workstreams and enhance research data lifecycles to conduct biomedical discovery. We conclude our study with a summary of key actionable recommendations to tackle multiomic data challenges across the stages and phases of biomedical discovery.

Standards-based data interoperability in the climate sciences

Emerging developments in geographic information systems and distributed computing offer a roadmap towards an unprecedented spatial data infrastructure in the climate sciences. Key to this are the standards developments for digital geographic information being led by the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) technical committee on geographic information/geomatics (TC211) and the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC). These, coupled with the evolution of standardised web services for applications on the internet by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), mean that opportunities for both new applications and increased interoperability exist. These are exemplified by the ability to construct ISO-compliant data models that expose legacy data sources through OGC web services. This paper concentrates on the applicability of these standards to climate data by introducing some examples and outlining the challenges ahead. An abstract data model is developed, based on ISO standards, and applied to a range of climate data - both observational and modelled. An OGC Web Map Server interface is constructed for numerical weather prediction (NWP) data stored in legacy data files. A W3C web service for remotely accessing gridded climate data is illustrated. Challenges identified include the following: first, both the ISO and OGC specifications require extensions to support climate data. Secondly, OGC services need to fully comply with W3C web services, and support complex access control. Finally, to achieve real interoperability, broadly accepted community-based semantic data models are required across the range of climate data types. These challenges are being actively pursued, and broad data interoperability for the climate sciences appears within reach.

Ubiquitous Health Profile (UHPr): a big data curation platform for supporting health data interoperability

The lack of Interoperable healthcare data presents a major challenge, towards achieving ubiquitous health care. The plethora of diverse medical standards, rather than common standards, is widening the gap of interoperability. While many organizations are working towards a standardized solution, there is a need for an alternate strategy, which can intelligently mediate amongst a variety of medical systems, not complying with any mainstream healthcare standards while utilizing the benefits of several standard merging initiates, to eventually create digital health personas. The existence and efficiency of such a platform is dependent upon the underlying storage and processing engine, which can acquire, manage and retrieve the relevant medical data. In this paper, we present the Ubiquitous Health Profile (UHPr), a multi-dimensional data storage solution in a semi-structured data curation engine, which provides foundational support for archiving heterogeneous medical data and achieving partial data interoperability in the healthcare domain. Additionally, we present the evaluation results of this proposed platform in terms of its timeliness, accuracy, and scalability. Our results indicate that the UHPr is able to retrieve an error free comprehensive medical profile of a single patient, from a set of slightly over 116.5 million serialized medical fragments for 390,101 patients while maintaining a good scalablity ratio between amount of data and its retrieval speed.

Terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) data provide 3-D measurements of vegetation structure and have the potential to support the calibration and validation of satellite and airborne sensors. The increasing range of different commercial and scientific TLS instruments holds challenges for data and instrument interoperability. Using data from various TLS sources will be critical to upscale study areas or compare data. In this paper, we provide a general framework to compare the interoperability of TLS instruments. We compare three TLS instruments that are the same make and model, the RIEGL VZ-400. We compare the range accuracy and evaluate the manufacturer's radiometric calibration for the uncalibrated return intensities. Our results show that the range accuracy between instruments is comparable and within the manufacturer's specifications. This means that the spatial XYZ data of different instruments can be combined into a single data set. Our findings demonstrate that radiometric calibration is instrument specific and needs to be carried out for each instrument individually before including reflectance information in TLS analysis. We show that the residuals between the calibrated reflectance panels and the apparent reflectance measured by the instrument are greatest for highest reflectance panels (residuals ranging from 0.058 to 0.312).

Toward data interoperability of Enterprise and Control Applications via the Industry 4.0 Asset Administration Shell

In a cyber-physical system, enterprise applications, control functions, and physical manufacturing assets are interconnected to seamlessly exchange information. However, the software and hardware often differ in terms of their data interfaces, data formats and semantics. Conventional enterprise applications usually employ file-based interfaces (e.g., Excel);control applications always support Ethernet-based protocols (e.g., OPC UA). Thus, data interoperability is currently lacking. The asset administration shell (AAS) is a new approach for achieving data interoperability across the automation pyramid as the AASX data format represents AAS information and supports data communication via OPC UA. In this study, we first provide insights into the AASX format and give exemplary applications on AASX;we then present an AASX-based solution for bidirectional data exchange between enterprise and control applications. In this solution, the conversion between AASX and Excel spreadsheets is completed to enable interoperable data exchange. Finally, a data exchange scenario for motor control is constructed to validate the effectiveness of the solution. The result shows no data were lost during the two-way conversions.

One of the critical problems that cities encounter is the risk of natural disasters. Their impacts generally comprise life and economic losses, community disruption, and other negative effects on human, along with destruction of properties, environmental, social losses. To prepare and response a disaster situation properly, it is essential to consider a variety of urban-level data including buildings, infrastructure systems, emergency planning, household networks, and others. However, since each domain entails heterogeneous data formats and structures, it has been a fundamental obstacle to hinder their seamless and consistent data exchange and integration according to the demands of the disaster phases. To address this heterogeneity problem, this research study proposes a framework to facilitate developing an urban-level data interoperability schema for disaster scenarios by inquiring necessary data requirements from pre-developed data exchange standards according to disaster phases. The framework utilizes model view definitions (MVDs) that have been developed to represent model exchanges and required information for different applications and use cases.
