IMP (Institute of Modern Physics) has been developing a Quadrupole-Sextupole nested CCT (Canted Cosine Theta Type) prototype for the HFRS (High Energy Fragment Separator) beamline of HIAF (High Intensity Heavy-ionAccelerator Facility) project. Hence a matrix harmonic coil method has been developed for magnetic field quality measurement of multi-pole nested magnets. Furthermore, a whole set of measurement system has been constructed and some special mechanical components, like cold bore, have been set up to cooperate with matrix harmonic coil measurement. After cold test at 4.2 K, the measurement results prove that the prototype property and field quality basically meets our requirement, and matrix harmonic coil also functioning well.

A voltage measurement system based on the Pockels electro-optic effect typically has, due to a half-wave voltage V-pi of a Pockels cell, a limitation on the unambiguous measurable range. To overcome such a limitation, we develop a polar-coordinate-based data analysis scheme with a simultaneous measurement of cos (pi V/V-pi) and sin (pi V/V-pi), where V is the voltage the Pockels cell experiences, i.e., the voltage we wish to measure. The developed data analysis scheme also corrects, without knowledge of V-pi, a misalignment of the Pockels cell and an imbalanced transmittance of a beam splitter between the horizontal and vertical components of the polarized laser beam. Thus, increased accuracy of not only the V-pi measurement during calibration procedure but also the voltage measurement itself is also achieved.

The MASHA facility [1-3] was developed as a high precision mass-spectrometer for heavy and super heavy elements with masses up to 450 a.m.u. It uses ISOL (Isotope Separation On-Line) method. Its unique properties opens great prospective for the investigation of neutron-rich nuclei produced in multinucleon transfer reactions. Mainly nuclei near the neutron N = 126 and N = 152 shell closures are of great interest. This region of nuclei is not so far thoroughly enough investigated while its research has direct relation to the synthesis of super heavy elements. As is known the island of stability close to super heavy elements (Z = 112-118) exists due to the shell effects in nuclei. More detailed investigation of these shell effects can greatly help in the synthesis of next super heavy elements. Heavy neutron rich radon isotopes were produced in the multinucleon transfer reaction Ar-40 + Th-232 at Flerov Laboratory of Nuclear Reactions, Dubna. Radon isotopes with given masses were detected using two types of detectors: a multi-strip well-type detector (made in Canberra) and a position-sensitive quantum counting hybrid pixel detector of the Timepix type [4]. The latter detector has an array of 256x256 square pixels each with a pitch size of 55 mu m for the full sensitive area 14x14mm(2). Radon isotopes implanted into the detector emit then alpha and beta particles until they reach the stable or long-lived isotopes at the end of their decay chains. The positions of radon isotopes, the tracks, times and energies of the beta particles were measured and analyzed. New software for the particle recognition and data analysis of the results obtained from the experiment was developed and used. It has been proven that MASHA + Timepix setup is a powerful instrument for investigation of neutron-rich isotopes far from stability limits.

The multi-gap resistive plate chambers (MRPCs) will be used as the Time-of-Flight (ToF) system in the Solenoidal Large Intensity Device (SoLID). The time resolution required by the experiment for the MRPC system is 20 ps in order to make a 3 sigma separation of the pi/K created in the collisions. To achieve this goal, the whole system including the MRPC detector, the front-end electronics and the readout system will be upgraded. Based on the new system, a time reconstruction algorithm using a combined LSTM (ComLSTM) neural network is proposed. The best time resolution achieved with this algorithm in a cosmic ray test is 16.8 ps, which largely improves the timing ability of the MRPC detector and well satisfies the requirement of the SoLID.

The CMS endcap calorimeter upgrade for the High Luminosity LHC in 2027 uses silicon sensors to achieve radiation tolerance, with the further benefit of a very high readout granularity. Small scintillator tiles with individual SiPM readout are used in regions permitted by the radiation levels. A reconstruction framework is being developed to fully exploit the granularity and other significant features of the detector like precision timing, especially in the high pileup environment of HL-LHC. An iterative clustering framework (TICL) has been put in place, and is being actively developed. The framework takes as input the clusters of energy deposited in individual calorimeter layers delivered by the CLUE algorithm, which has recently been revised and tuned. Mindful of the projected extreme pressure on computing capacity in the HL-LHC era, the algorithms are being designed with modern parallel architectures in mind. Important speedup has recently been obtained for the clustering algorithm by running it on GPUs. Machine learning techniques are being developed and integrated into the reconstruction framework. This paper will describe the approaches being considered and show first results.

Recently, during Collective Thomson Scattering (CTS) measurements at mm-waves aimed at studying the ion dynamics in fusion plasmas, strong signals of scattering of the injected beam with non-CTS origin have been detected. A possible explanation of these signals in terms of parametric decay instabilities (PDIs) of the injected wave with power threshold much lower than previously envisaged by theory was proposed [1, 2]. The experimental activity with CTS diagnostic at FTU is aimed at two purposes: the characterization of the thermal ion distribution function and the investigation of the possible low power PDIs processes foreseen by the recent models. In order to ease the data analysis, a set of data processing tools has been integrated on purpose, with an activity started in 2014. Here we present the last implementation of an integrated data analysis tool, aimed at the investigation of the signals detected with the CTS diagnostic. The last version of the software integrates information included in the raw spectra of scattered radiation with the modeled ECE emission, with the aim of providing calibrated spectra improved with respect to the ones provided up to now. The correct calibration of the signals on the real line of sight of the beams is helpful to better distinguish anomalous emissions from less powerful CTS radiation. In addition, the analysis tool compares the calibrated spectra with the ones predicted considering real scattering parameters evaluated by means of realistic beam-trajectories, changing during the pulse, allowing also to extract information on ion dynamics and plasma composition. The last version of the software, which takes into account also multi-reflection beam-tracing simulations in both polarization modes in support to the scattering experiments, is presented.

Passive acoustic monitoring of cetaceans with KM3NeT acoustic receivers

KM3NeT (Cubic Kilometer Neutrino Telescope) is a research infrastructure that comprises two underwater neutrino detectors located at different sites in the Mediterranean Sea: KM3NeT-Fr (ORCA) (offshore the coast of Toulon, France, at a depth of around 2500 m) and KM3NeT-It (ARCA) (off Capo Passero, Sicily, Italy, at a depth of around 3500 m). The experiment consists of vertical structures, called strings, along which the optical modules are positioned. A hydrophone, located on the base of each string, is used for the reconstruction of the position of the KM3NeT elements with an accuracy of 10 cm. The presence of acoustic sensors in an underwater environment gives the opportunity to detect and study the sound emissions of marine mammals present in the area. The presented work describes the identification programs of the signals emitted by dolphins (clicks and whistles) and sperm whales (clicks) and the results of the analysis of real data collected between spring 2020 and spring 2021.

Tomotok: python package for tomography of tokamak plasma radiation

A python package, called Tomotok, focused on performing tomographic inversion of tokamak plasma radiation is being developed at the Institute of Plasma Physics of the Czech Academy of Sciences. It aims at providing multiple inversion algorithms with an user friendly interface. In order to enable and ease performing tomographic inversion on different devices worldwide, it is planned to publish this software as open source in the near future. In this contribution, the package structure allowing an easy implementation of various tokamak and diagnostic geometries is described and an overview of the package contents is given. Apart from inversionmethods, overviewof Tomotok auxiliary content is given. The package provides tools for creating simple synthetic diagnostic system. These can be used for testing and benchmarking the code. This includes tools for building geometry matrices that describe the view of detectors using single line of sight approximation and artificial data generators capable of creating simple or hollow Gaussian profiles. The implemented inversion methods cover the minimum Fisher regularisation, biorthogonal decomposition and linear algebraic methods. The implementation of each method is explained, example results obtained by inverting phantom models are presented and discussed. The computation speed of implemented algorithms is benchmarked and compared.

Unfolding the background of secondary ions in measured nanodosimetric ionisation cluster size distributions

Nanodosimetry is a methodology for quantifying the effects of ionising radiation on matter by determining the frequency distributions of the cluster size of ionisations in nanometric target volumes. In previous investigations with the Ion Counter nanodosimeter operated at PTB, significant deviations for large cluster sizes were found in the comparison between measured and simulated data of ionisation cluster size distributions. These deviations could be explained by a background of secondary ions, which are produced within the transport system of the ionised target molecules. In this paper, two different approaches were investigated to correct for the background of secondary ions in the measured data to obtain the "true" cluster size distribution to be used, e.g., in predictions of biological effectiveness. In the first approach, the correction of the background was treated as a minimising problem. In the second approach, an iterative unfolding algorithm using Bayes statistics was employed. In all cases where the convolution of the background-corrected results with the secondary ion background agrees well with the corresponding measured cluster size distribution, the background- correction led to an improved agreement between measurement and simulation. For the removal of a background of secondary ions from measured cluster size distributions, the unfolding algorithm using Bayes statistics is the preferred method as it proved to be the most effective and the least sensitive to boundary conditions. Moreover, it was considerably less time consuming.

Performance comparison between signal digitizers and low-cost digital oscilloscopes: spectroscopic, pulse shape discrimination and timing capabilities for nuclear detectors

Signal digitizers revolutionized the approach to the electronics readout of radiation detectors in Nuclear Physics. These highly specialized pieces of equipment are designed to acquire the signals that are characteristic of the detectors in nuclear physics experiments. The functions of the several modules that were once needed for signal acquisition, can now be substituted by a single digitizer. As suggested by the name, with such readout modules, signals are first digitized (i.e. the signal waveform is sampled and converted to a digital representation) and then either stored or analyzed on-the-fly. The performances can be comparable or better than the traditional analog counterparts, in terms of energy, time resolution, and acquisition rate. In this work, we investigate the use of general-purpose digital oscilloscopes as signal digitizers for nuclear detectors. In order to have a proper comparison, we employ a distributed data acquisition system (DAQ), that standardizes the interface between the hardware and the on-line data analysis. The signals, from a set of typical radiation detectors, are digitized and analyzed with the very same algorithms in order to avoid biases due to different software analysis. We compare two traditional signal digitizers (CAEN DT5725 and CAEN DT5751) to two low-cost digital oscilloscopes (Digilent Analog Discovery 2, and Red Pitaya STEMLab 125-14), in terms of their capabilities for spectroscopy (energy resolution), time resolution, pulse shape discrimination, and maximum acquisition rate.
