This paper presents a solution and a methodology to recover legacy databases of most DBMS using formal-method based techniques. These formal methods (terms rewriting systems) are applied during the data reverse engineering process and allow for an automatic approach. This automatic approach reduces the time invested and the number of people involved in the data reverse engineering and data migration processes. This solution is being implemented in the RELS (Re-engineering of Legacy Systems) tool. The RELS tool is under development in the Department of Information Systems and Computation of the Valencia University of Technology in collaboration with the industrial partner CARE-Technologies. RELS is used together with the model compiler Sosy Technology® of CARE-Technologies and provides a complete solution to the re-engineering proccess.

During the transformation of huge volume of data, there might exist data mismatch, miscalculation and/or loss of useful data that leads to an unsuccessful data transformation. To check out the occurrence of such possible errors, testing is a crucial requirement. The existing quality testing methods are either unreliable, return biased results, fail to provide answers for data differences or have several limitations which does not treat each and every part of the data into the process. We propose an approach of big data transformation testing based on the concept of data reverse engineering. It is a comprehensive approach that reverse the whole transformation process and does a comparison testing on each and every entry of the data if the original source data can be constructed back from the target data, once successful ETL process is done.

Smart cards are tamper resistant devices that manipulate assets in a secure way. Among the assets, one is of a particular interest the native layers. If some attacks have succeeded in getting access to the applicative layer very few of them have had access to the native layers. We propose here to use applicative programs to perform data reverse engineering in order to understand the hidden algorithms that manage the memory allocation. We are then able to generate our own fake references on objects that can be manipulated by the system as legal objects. Then, we propose a new attack called auto-forges that leads the system to interpret its own data or program as valid Java meta data. This attack provides access to new memory fragments where the native layers are stored. Getting access to this asset allows us to start the reverse engineering of these native layers. A framework for object-oriented reverse engineering of legacy information systems

There is every indication that an object-oriented view of an information system is a solid foundation for understanding its legacy organization, for relating it to the environment in which it is embedded and for guiding its reengineering. In this paper we present a framework based upon the formal object-oriented specification language TROLL, which provides an object-oriented view of legacy information systems. The aim is to combine existing methods and keep results in a common and suitable description base which provides the appropriate form for deriving object specifications from the legacy IS. We use the language TROLL not only as description language, but also as a framework to support the maintenance engineers in their reverse engineering tasks by giving hints about what to do next to complete the object specifications. The result of the approach is a formal object-oriented specification of the legacy IS that is suitable both for developing a new IS or for reengineering the legacy system.

EXTRACTING AN ENTITY-RELATIONSHIP SCHEMA FROM A RELATIONAL dataBASE THROUGH reverse engineering

This article presents a method for extracting a conceptual schema from a relational database. The method is based on an analysis of data manipulation statements in the code of an application using a relational DBMS. Attributes representing references between tables in the relational schema and possible keys are determined by an analysis of join conditions in queries and view definitions. Knowledge about which attributes link tables is used to investigate the database extension in a selective manner. When the keys cannot be unambiguously determined, possible solutions are generated by the system under guidance of the user. The approach makes it possible to efficiently construct a conceptual schema from only rudimentary information.

In order to remain useful test scripts must evolve parallel to the test objects they are intended to test. In the approach described here the test objects are web services whose test script is derived from the web service interface definition. The test script structure is automatically generated from the WSDL structure with tags and attributes, however, the content, i.e. the test data has to be inserted by hand. From this script service requests are automatically generated and service responses automatically validated. As with other generated software artifacts, once the structure of the interface or the logic of the targeted service is changed, the content of the test script is no longer valid. It has to be altered and/or enhanced to fit the new interface structure and/or the altered service logic. In this paper the author proposes a semi-automated approach to solving this test maintenance problem and explains how it has been implemented in a web service testing tool by employing data reverse engineering techniques. The author also report on his experience with the approach when maintaining a test in the field.

The software industry is increasingly confronted with the issues of understanding and maintaining a special type of object-oriented systems, namely enterprise applications. A specific concern for these applications is to understand the persistent data (usually stored in a RDBMS), and its manipulation in the object-oriented source code. While foreign keys are an important means for indicating relations within the persistent data, oftentimes, by looking solely at the database schema, it is impossible to determine the exact nature of these relations. This paper proposes a novel approach for determining a refined understanding of the relations among the persistent data, by correlating the information about foreign keys extracted from the database schema with the way the data are used in the source code. By analyzing two enterprise systems we found that the proposed approach helps specifying a significant number of foreign key constraints in terms of their objectual meaning (e.g., if they denote an inheritance or an aggregation relation). Thus, the approach contributes to enhancing, in an automated manner, the understanding of a system's database schema by tying it to the source code that uses it.

As enterprise applications become more and more complex, the understanding and quality assurance of these systems become an increasingly important issue. One specific concern of data reverse engineering, a necessary process for this type of applications which tackles the mentioned aspects, is to retrieve constraints which are not explicitly declared in the database schema but verified in the code. In this paper we propose a novel approach for detecting the relational discrepancies between database schemas and source-code in enterprise applications, as part of the data reverse engineering process. Detecting and removing these discrepancies allows us to ensure the accuracy of the stored data as well as to increase the level of understanding of the data involved in an enterprise application.
