We present novel query algorithms that efficiently support some popular XPath operations over LZCS-transformed documents. The LZCS transformation compresses a redundant XML collection without loss. The main idea of LZCS, inspired by Lempel-Ziv compression, is to replace whole substructures by previous occurrences thereof, and our algorithms try to reuse the work done over those repeating substructures. The algorithms are implemented in a prototype called lzcs-grep. The main advantage of lzcs-grep is that it processes the documents in transformed form, obtaining very fast response times in combination with low memory requirements. Our experimental results show that lzcs-grep is competitive with other XPath processors even over untransformed documents, and by far unbeaten when it can operate over their LZCS-transformed version.

Recent work in audio information retrieval has demonstrated the effectiveness of combining semantic information, such as descriptive, tags with acoustic content. However, these methods largely ignore the possibility of tag queries that do not yet exist in the database and the possibility of similar terms. In this work, we propose a network structure integrating similarity between semantic tags, content-based similarity between environmental audio recordings, and the collective sound descriptions provided by a user community. We then demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach by comparing the use of existing similarity measures for incorporating new vocabulary into an audio annotation and retrieval system.

Skyline Queries have recently received a lot of attention due to their intuitive query capabilities. Following the concept of Pareto optimatity all 'best' database objects are returned to the user. However, this often results in unmanageable large result set sizes hampering the success of this innovative paradigm. As an effective remedy for this problem, trade-offs provide a natural concept for dealing with incomparable choices. Such trade-offs, however, are not reflected by the Pareto paradigm. Thus, incorporating them into the users' preference orders and adjusting skyline results accordingly needs special algorithms beyond traditional skylining. For the actual integration of trade-offs into skylines, the problem of ensuring the consistency of arbitrary trade-off sets poses a demanding challenge. Consistency is a crucial aspect when dealing with multi-dimensional trade-offs spanning over several attributes. If the consistency should be violated, cyclic preferences may occur in the result set. But such cyclic preferences cannot be resolved by information systems in a sensible way;Often, this problem is circumvented by restricting the trade-offs expressiveness, e.g. by altogether ignoring some classes of possibly inconsistent trade-offs. In this paper, we will present a new algorithm capable of efficiently verifying the consistency of any arbitrary set of trade-offs. After motivating its basic concepts and introducing the algorithm itself, we will also show that it exhibits superior average-case performance. The benefits of our approach promise to pave the way towards personalized and cooperative information systems.

Top-k query has been widely studied recently in many applied fields. Fagin et al. [3] proposed an efficient algorithm, the Threshold Algorithm (i.e. TA), to process top-k queries. However, in many cases, TA does not terminate even if the final top-k results have been found for some time. Based on these, we propose a novel algorithm: Density Threshold Algorithm (i.e. DTA), which is designed to minimize the useless accesses of a top-k query, and introduce a novel indexing structure, Density Index, to support our algorithms. However, we proved the DTA is not instance optimal in Fagin's notion and we also propose an instance optimal algorithm named Selective-Density Threshold Algorithm (i.e. S-DTA). Finally, extensive experiments show that our algorithms have significant improvement on the efficiency, compared with the TA algorithm.

Automatically annotating or tagging unlabeled audio files has several applications, such as database organization and recommender systems. We are interested in the case where the system is trained using clean high-quality audio files, but most of the files that need to be automatically tagged during the test phase are heavily compressed and noisy, for instance if they were captured on a mobile device. In this situation we assume the audio files follow a covariate shift model in the acoustic feature space, i.e., the feature distributions are different in the training and test phases, but the conditional distribution of labels given features remains unchanged. Our method uses a specially designed audio similarity measure as input to a set of weighted logistic regressors, which attempt to alleviate the influence of covariate shift. Results on a freely available database of sound files contributed and labeled by non-expert users, demonstrate effective automatic tagging performance.

People and things become mobile sensors that converge to our daily life. This has unwittingly collected humongous of time series of data with location. People are finding ways to turn this raw data into valuable information as a distinguished business analytic. Importantly, the demand of speedy computation with an appealing visualization is crucial to success. Thus, it reveals the potential economic benefits and becomes an overwhelming new research area that requiring sophisticated mechanisms and technologies to reach the demand. Over the past decade, there have attempts of using accelerators along with multicore CPUs in boosting large-scale data computation. We proposed an emerging SQL-like GPU query accelerator, GalacticaDB. In addition, we extended it to have the geo-spatial compute capabilities. The query operation executes parallelly with drawing support from a high performance and energy efficient NVIDIA Tesla technology. Our result has shown the significant speedup by using GalacticaDB.

This paper presents three case studies that demonstrate methods for aggregating rms voltage variation measurements stored in power quality measurement databases. The first case study presents a case for why temporal aggregation is necessary for computing voltage sag indices. The second case study presents an example where spatial aggregation of rms variation measurements was necessary as the computation of voltage sag indices at the meter level would be incomplete. The third case demonstrates how measurements can be linked using system event records for correlating measurements related to system faults.

This paper considers the problem of predictive fusion coding for storage of multiple spatio-temporally correlated sources so as to enable efficient selective retrieval of data from subsets of sources as designated by future queries. Only statistical information about future queries is available during encoding. While temporal correlations can be exploited by coding over large blocks, the growth in encoding complexity renders this approach impractical and hence the interest in a low complexity predictive coding approach. However, the design of optimal predictive fusion coding systems is considerably complicated by the presence of the prediction loop, and the potentially exponential growth of the query sets. We propose a complexity-constrained predictive fusion coder and derive an iterative algorithm for its design, which is based on the "Asymptotic Closed Loop" framework and hence, circumvents convergence and stability issues of traditional predictive quantizer design. The proposed predictive fusion coder optimizes the distortion - retrieval rate tradeoff, given a fixed storage capacity, and provides significant gains over storage schemes that perform only joint compression or memoryless fusion coding of all sources.

Nowadays' image retrieval techniques focus on modifying a query contour based on the relative correlations of relevant images. The spatial relationship between the relevant images and all the other images in database (i.e. the directional information) is not explored and utilized well. From the aspect of feature space, when a user selects relevant images, the direction to the potential relevant images is implicitly expressed. In this paper, we propose a Dynamic Directional Navigation (DDN) system to explore the directional information and navigate in the data space to find similar images. Multiple queries will be used when the relevant images point to different directions. The experiment results indicate that our technique can address the semantic gap well in Content-Based Image Retrieval (CBIR) and achieves better precision and recall than the previous techniques.
