Software-only reliability techniques protect against transient faults without the overhead of hardware techniques. Although existing low-level software- only fault-tolerance techniques detect faults, they offer no recovery assistance. This article describes three automatic, instruction-level, software- only recovery techniques representing different trade-offs between reliability and performance.

A new rolling bearing fault diagnosis approach based on multiscale permutation entropy (MPE), Laplacian score (LS), and support vector machines (SVMs) is proposed in this paper. Permutation entropy (PE) was recently proposed and defined to measure the randomicity and detect dynamical changes of time series. However, for the complexity of mechanical systems, the randomicity and dynamic changes of the vibration signal will exist in different scales. Thus, the definition of MPE is introduced and employed to extract the nonlinear fault characteristics from the bearing vibration signal in different scales. Besides, the SVM is utilized to accomplish the fault feature classification to fulfill diagnostic procedure automatically. Meanwhile, in order to avoid a high dimension of features, the Laplacian score (LS) is used to refine the feature vector by ranking the features according to their importance and correlations with the main fault information. Finally, the rolling bearing fault diagnosis method based on MPE, LS, and SVM is proposed and applied to the experimental data. The experimental data analysis results indicate that the proposed method could identify the fault categories effectively.

The article discusses model driven engineering techniques in computer software design, and the difficulties of testing automatic model transformations. A fault in one model system can propagate into another during this process, but the changes induced by the transformation often make it difficult to systematically isolate the source of the problem. An example is provided which involves flattening hierarchies and meta-models. The difficulties which arise from the translation of complex data between heterogeneous computer languages is discussed. Potential solutions to some of these problems are also presented, involving the construction of oracles, meta-heuristics, and the use of white-box testing.

In the paper, two-stage signal pre-processing algorithm based on the filtration is presented. The developed algorithm is dedicated for the diagnostic programmable device PUD-2. The PUD-2 is the real-time analyzer based on programmable logic devices FPGA, as well as on ARM processor. Application of FPGA programmable devices and ARM processors allows to merge advantages of hardware and software implementations. Further, analysis of digital filters parameters in case of its efficient realization on the FPGA is presented. The aim of the study is to select digital-filter parameters in such way that the available resources of FPGA are used efficiently and filter characteristics meet established criteria. In the study, low pass finite impulse response and infinite impulse response filters are compared. For the first stage of the signal pre-processing algorithm, hardware implementation of the infinite impulse response filter is proposed, contrary to the second stage, where software realization of the finite impulse response filter is suggested. Combination of hardware and software filtration algorithms allows for fast and efficient realization of signal pre-processing algorithm used in analysis carried out on the PUD-2.

A number of open tools and standards are emerging for embedded instrumentation, enabling simultaneous operation of an embedded logic BIST engine and a voltage monitor for chip test. These two instruments are being operated simultaneously for yield analysis and determination of failures at the ATE- or board-level correlated voltage starvation. It is being observed that an open standard for embedded instrumentation can optimize the effectiveness of the technology. An open standard, such as the preliminary IJTAG standard can be provided for all instruments. All instruments that confirm to the open standard can be accessed simultaneously, helping the effects of multiple instruments working together. The basic IJTAG architecture involves three partitions or zones, including the zone accessing the technology that interfaces the other two zones and the embedded instruments with external environment.

Fault-tolerant controllers (Fits) have recently gained considerable attention due to their important role in maintaining the safety of modern technological systems via configured redundancy. The basis of a FTC through an analysis of the requirements of safety-critical systems is introduced in this paper. The development of passive FTC approaches, including their advantages and disadvantages, is discussed based on safety requirements. Closely associated with the safety-relevant issues, recent progress in active FTC design methodologies is reviewed in the sequence of fault detection and diagnosis (FDD), reconfigurable controls, and integration of FDD and reconfiguration. In summary, it is the view of this paper that addressing safety issues is the key to further development of FTCs. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

We present a quartet-based phylogeny algorithm that returns the correct topology for n taxa in O(n log n) time with high probability, assuming that each quartet is inconsistent with the true tree topology with constant probability, independent of other quartets. Our incremental algorithm relies upon a search tree structure for the phylogeny that is balanced, with high probability, no matter the true topology. In experiments, our prototype was as fast as the fastest heuristics, but because real data do not typically satisfy our probabilistic assumptions, its overall performance is not as good as our theoretical results predict.
