Multicore is here to stay. To keep up with the hardware innovation, software developers must move from sequential programming to concurrent programming. However, this move is slow and challenging due to the exponential complexity in reasoning about concurrency. In particular, Heisenbugs such as data races, which are non-deterministic concurrency errors, pervasively infect concurrent software, making concurrent program debugging notoriously difficult. In this dissertation, we develop several effective methods for debugging concurrent programs along four directions: multiprocessor deterministic replay, predictive trace analysis, trace simplification, and data sharing reduction. We first present LEAP, a lightweight record and replay system that makes Heisenbugs reproducible on multi-core and multi-processors. Underpinned by a new local-order based replay theorem, LEAP is fast, portable, and deterministic. As long as a Heisenbug manifests once, LEAP is able to deterministically reproduce it in every subsequent execution, and more importantly, with much lower overhead compared to previous approaches. We second present PECAN and TraceFilter, a persuasive predictive trace analysis system that predicts Heisenbugs from normal executions, and an efficient algorithm that significantly improves the scalability of predictive analysis by removing the trace redundancy. The salient feature of PECAN is that, in addition to predicting Heisenbugs, it generates a concrete execution that deterministically expose and validate the predicted bugs. With PECAN, programmers are provided with the full execution history and context information to understand the bug, which dramatically expedites the debugging process. We third present LEAN and SimTrace, a dynamic and a static technique for simplifying concurrency bug reproduction through removing computational redundancy and validating trace equivalence. Embedded systems are increasingly pervasive, and the creation of reliable controlling software offers unique challenges. Embedded software must interact directly with hardware, it must respond to events in a time-critical fashion, and it typically employs concurrency to meet response time requirements. This paper describes an innovative course that gives students in-depth exposure to the challenges of writing reliable, time-critical, concurrent code. Students design and implement a real-time operating system (RTOS), and they write application code that uses the RTOS they construct. Code development and debugging take place in a simulation environment that offers visibility into the system and strictly repeatable execution while maintaining hardware compatibility. We describe the structure of the class, the custom tools used, and the laboratory sequence that results in a functional RTOS. We discuss the development of the class and its impact on our students.

Today's multithreaded programs are riddled with bugs that can cause multiple threads to access shared data and interleave in ways that do not correspond to any sequential executions. These concurrency bugs give rise to the problem of data-consistency errors, which can lead to drastic consequences (e.g., the Northeast Blackout of 2003). However, detecting concurrency bugs is difficult because these bugs are manifested only under very specific thread interleavings but the number of possible interleavings for a multithreaded program is often myriad. This thesis presents program analysis techniques to automatically verify that a multithreaded program correctly uses synchronization primitives to guarantee atomic-set serializability, a data-consistency criterion recently proposed for better detection of concurrency bugs. Atomic-set serializability characterizes a wide range of concurrency bugs. In addition, previous experiences using this criterion show that it is less likely to have benign violations than the other criteria. This thesis addresses the following two problems on detecting atomic-set serializability violations: inadequate interleaving coverage and inadequate input coverage. First, dynamic approaches are widely used to detect errors (e.g., malign data race) caused by concurrency bugs. Existing dynamic approaches for detecting such violations are based on runtime monitoring. Their effectiveness is restricted by the inadequate coverage of interleavings. To address this problem, this thesis proposes a dynamic predictive analysis technique that can infer potential violations from executions that are even violation-free, and an active randomized testing technique that can quickly confirm real violations reported by the dynamic predictive analysis technique.
