Addressing IoT storage constraints: A hybrid architecture for decentralized data storage and centralized management

As blockchain and AI technologies advance, industrial applications increasingly rely on IoT devices for continuous, massive data collection. However, these devices have storage limitations when dealing with extensive data streams. The InterPlanetary File System (IPFS), a decentralized storage solution, addresses these constraints. However, IPFS's significant time requirement for data recording introduces a new challenge. Furthermore, its Content IDentifiers (CIDs) do not inherently convey the source device's identity or associated metadata, adding complexity to specific condition-based data retrieval. These factors hinder the discernment of the current data state, preventing IoT devices from clearing storage space by deleting unnecessary data. Consequently, this results in inadequate storage capacity for IoT devices, posing an obstacle to collecting and transmitting large data. Our study proposes a hybrid architecture to address these challenges, integrating the decentralized storage capabilities of IPFS with a centralized CID management system. This architecture employs Message Queuing Telemetry Transport (MQTT) for efficient CID transfer and a database for archiving CID values and associated metadata. Using the archived metadata, IoT devices determine the status of the data and perform tasks accordingly. This enables effective storage management for IoT devices by removing data that has already been uploaded and is safe for deletion. Our architecture demonstrates versatility, accommodating data of varying sizes, formats, and frequencies. We validated our approach through an extensive 100-hour experiment, successfully collecting 356 GB of data from diverse sensors. These results underscore the robustness and adaptability of our architecture, emphasizing its potential for a range of IoT applications.

Dantzig-Wolfe decomposition (DWD) is a classical algorithm for solving large-scale linear programs whose constraint matrix involves a set of independent blocks coupled with a set of linking rows. The algorithm decomposes such a model into a master problem and a set of independent subproblems that can be solved in a distributed manner. In a typical implementation, the master problem is solved cen-trally. In certain settings, solving the master problem centrally is undesirable or infeasible, such as in the case of decentralized storage of data, or when independent agents who are responsible for the subprob-lems desire privacy of information. In this paper, we propose a fully distributed DWD algorithm which relies on solving the master problem using a consensus-based Alternating Direction Method of Multipliers (ADMM) method. We derive error bounds on the optimality gap and feasibility violation of the proposed approach. We provide preliminary computational results for our algorithm using a Message Passing Inter-face implementation on a delivery planning problem, the multi-commodity network flow problem, and synthetic instances where we obtain high quality solutions. The key to controlling the spread of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and reducing mortality is highly dependent on the safe and effective use of vaccines for the general population. Current COVID-19 vaccination practices (intramuscular injection of solution-based vaccines) are limited by heavy reliance on medical professionals, poor compliance, and laborious vaccination recording procedures, resulting in a waste of health resources and low vaccination coverage, etc. In this study, we developed a smart mushroom-inspired imprintable and lightly detachable (MILD) micro-needle platform for the effective and convenient delivery of multidose COVID-19 vaccines and decentralized vaccine information storage. The mushroom-like structure allows the MILD system to be easily pressed into the skin and detached from the patch ,r base, acting as a "tattoo" to record the vaccine counts in situ without any storage equipment, offering quick accessibility and effortless readout, saving a great deal of valuable time and energy for both patients and health professionals. After loading inactivated SARS-CoV-2 virus-based vaccines, MILD system induced a high level of antibodies against the SARS-CoV-2 receptor-binding domain (RBD) in vivo without eliciting systemic toxicity and local damage. Collectively, this smart delivery platform serves as a promising carrier to improve COVID-19 vaccination efficacy through its dual capabilities of vaccine delivery and in situ data storage, thus exhibiting great potential for helping to contain the COVID-19 pandemic or a resurgence.

BMP: A blockchain assisted meme prediction method through exploring contextual factors from social networks

In the era of social networks, the scale and speed of online information dissemination have been greatly enhanced, thus leading to a large number of meme being generated, spread and popularized in the Internet. Social networks strongly promote the replication and dissemination of modalities, which are powerfully explosive and can be copied and spread in large numbers in a short period of time. Because of the typical decentralized nature of meme propagation in social networks, the development of blockchain technology provides a reliable environment for meme propagation models. However, there are various hurdles to using online user behavior data to predict meme popularity, such as the fact that there are only a few user comments and retweets beneath a meme topic, making it difficult to predict meme popularity directly by basic social data mining at this moment. In this scenario, mining the contextual information of web users can considerably increase meme prediction performance. Because social data contains a wealth of contextual and user relationship characteristics, we offer for the first time a blockchain-assisted based meme popularity prediction (BMP) mechanism based on empirical approach. To begin, we suggest a blockchain-based data storage approach to mimic a decentralized ecosystem. Following that, we assess meme popularity in terms of four contextually based web user characteristics. Finally, using a probabilistic linear model, we present a meme popularity prediction model that integrates the four contextual characteristics. By making a comparison of comprehensive tests with existing methodologies, we illustrate the usefulness and accuracy of our proposed model. The experimental results indicate that the proposed meme prediction approach can provide a meme prediction service with high accuracy, a well-defined decentralized environment, and steady performance, making it a reliable service for recommendation systems and web-based information dissemination. Computer blockchain technology provides a possible means to enhance data security, transparency, and overall efficiency. This study focuses on the design and optimization ideas of using blockchain technology in student management systems. The architecture plan for this system was developed during the design phase, emphasizing the use of smart contracts to automate registration, classification, and authentication processes, as well as decentralized data storage and encrypted hashing of irreversible records. License blockchain can be used to provide privacy protection and access restrictions, ensuring that student data is secure and accessible to authorized parties. The goal of optimizing the solution is to improve scalability and transaction speed, while reducing the amount of energy used in traditional blockchain systems. The improvement of consensus algorithms and second layer extension technologies such as sidechain or off chain protocols can achieve faster data processing without compromising security. In addition, metadata management and advanced encryption technologies have improved system performance and minimized data to the greatest extent possible. © 2024 IEEE.

Dynamic storage Optimization for Communication between AI Agents

Today, AI is primarily narrow, meaning that each model or agent can only perform one task or a narrow range of tasks. However, systems with broad capabilities can be built by connecting multiple narrow AIs. Connecting various AI agents in an open, multi-organizational environment requires a new communication model. Here, we develop a multi-layered ontology-based communication framework. Ontology concepts provide semantic definitions for the agents' inputs and outputs, enabling them to dynamically identify communication requirements and build processing pipelines. Critical is that the ontology concepts are stored on a decentralized storage medium, allowing fast reading and writing. The multi-layered design offers flexibility by dividing a monolithic ontology model into semantic layers, allowing for the optimization of read and write latencies. We investigate the impact of this optimization by benchmarking experiments on three decentralized storage mediums-IPFS, Tendermint Cosmos, and Hyperledger Fabric-across a wide range of configurations. The increased read-write speeds allow AI agents to communicate efficiently in a decentralized environment utilizing ontology principles, making it easier for AI to be used widely in various applications.

decentralized storage is still rarely used in an academic and educational environment, although it offers better availability than conventional systems. It still happens that data is not available at a certain time due to heavy load or maintenance on university servers. A decentralized solution can help keep the data available and distribute the load among several peers. In our experiment, we created a cluster of containers in Docker to evaluate a private IPFS cluster for an academic data store focusing on availability, GET/PUT performance, and storage needs. As sample data, we used PDF files to analyze the data transport in our peer-to-peer network with Wireshark. We found that a bandwidth of at least 100 kbit/s is required for IPFS to function but recommend at least 1000 kbit/s for smooth operation. Also, the hard disk and memory size should be adapted to the data. Other limiting factors such as CPU power and delay in the internet connection did not affect the operation of the IPFS cluster.

Comparison of Distributed Tamper-Proof storage Methods for Public Key Infrastructures

Modern Public Key Infrastructures (PKIs) allow users to create and maintain centrally stored cryptographic certificates. These infrastructures use a so-called certificate chain. At the root of the chain, a root Certification Authority (CA) is responsible for issuing the base certificate. Every verification and certification step within the chain is based upon the security of said root CA. Thus, its operation security is of great concern. Since the root certificates are stored locally on the root CA, any Denial of Service (DoS) attack may render the whole certificate chain, which is based on of the attacked root CA, inoperable. Therefore, this article evaluates different approaches to a decentralized data storage system that is based on the Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT). To show the real-world potential of the proposed approaches, we also evaluate the different technologies using a novel PKI mechanism called Near Field Communication Key Exchange (NFC-KE). The results indicate that modern distributed data storage solutions such as Interplanetary Filesystem (IPFS) and SIA can have significant performance and decentralization benefits in comparison to purely Blockchain-based technologies like Hyperledger Fabric. However, they lack any Smart Contract functionality, which requires a software developer to implement verification mechanisms in centralized software solutions.

Blockchain startups are basing their business models on disrupting the centralized way of data storage by highlighting the value of data to the public. A distributed approach to storing data is the safer way to prevent attacks is what is being evangelized. GAFA (Google, Apple, Facebook, Amazon) have monopolized data, therefore bringing in the most revenue whilst depriving the data generators of any form of compensation. In our work, we propose a platform where a user can store his/her own personal data. Here, we present to the user the right to decide what happens to their data. These decisions include selling, renting, and deleting data. The deletion of data undermines the fundamentals the blockchain is built on (data immutability). We address the issues of personal data sharing and how a user's right to delete his/her data can be enforced in a blockchain based network such as ours.
