Theoretical model and implementation of a real time intelligent bin status monitoring system using rule based decision algorithms

Due to the rising trend of urbanization along with overconsumption of non-recyclable resources, the volume of municipal solid waste is increasing every day. An efficient, cost effective and environment friendly solution for real time bin status monitoring, collection and transportation of municipal solid waste is still a major challenge to the local municipal authorities. This research proposes a novel model, architecture and intelligent sensing algorithm for real time solid waste bin monitoring system that would contribute to the solid waste collection optimization. The monitoring application is based on decision algorithms for sensing solid waste data in a wireless sensor network. The system is built on a three level architecture like smart bin, gateway and control station. The elementary concept is that, smart bins collect their status when any changes occur and transmit the status data to a server via an intermediate coordinator. A set of applications in server presents the updated bin status on real time. The field test performances show that the system can efficiently monitor real time bin status that makes it feasible to decide, which bin should collect and which should not. Thus the proposed system has achieved its goal to provide real time bin status information to the solid waste management operator. Later, this information can be used for collection route optimization to reduce collection costs and carbon emissions which in turn contribute to build green society. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. Secure message dissemination is an important issue in vehicular networks, especially considering the vulnerability of vehicle to vehicle (V2V) message dissemination to malicious attacks. Traditional security mechanisms, largely based on message encryption and key management, can only guarantee secure message exchanges between known source and destination pairs. For secure message dissemination in vehicular networks against insider attackers, who may tamper the content of the disseminated messages, ensuring the consistency and integrity of the transmitted messages becomes a major concern that traditional message encryption and key management based approaches fall short to address. In this paper, by incorporating the underlying network topology information, we propose a novel heuristic decision algorithm that enables a vehicle to make a decision on the message content using minimal information readily available. The proposed algorithm can be readily implemented in practice. Simulations are conducted to compare the security performance achieved by the proposed decision algorithm with that achieved by existing ones that do not consider or only partially consider the topological information, to establish the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm. Our results show that by incorporating the network topology information, the security performance can be significantly improved. This work sheds light on the optimum algorithm design for secure message dissemination in vehicular networks.

Mobile e-health applications provide users and healthcare practitioners with an insightful way to check users/patients' status and monitor their daily calorie intake. Mobile e-health applications provide users and healthcare practitioners with an insightful way to check users/patients' status and monitor their daily activities. This paper proposes a cloud-based mobile e-health calorie system that can classify food objects in the plate and further compute the overall calorie of each food object with high accuracy. The novelty in our system is that we are not only offloading heavy computational functions of the system to the cloud, but also employing an intelligent cloud-broker mechanism to strategically and efficiently utilize cloud instances to provide accurate and improved time response results. The broker system uses a dynamic cloud allocation mechanism that takes decisions on allocating and de-allocating cloud instances in real-time for ensuring the average response time stays within a predefined threshold. In this paper, we further demonstrate various scenarios to explain the workflow of the cloud components including: segmentation, deep learning, indexing food images, decision making algorithms, calorie computation, scheduling management as part of the proposed cloud broker model. The implementation results of our system showed that the proposed cloud broker results in a 45% gain in the overall time taken to process the images in the cloud. With the use of dynamic cloud allocation mechanism, we were able to reduce the average time consumption by 77.21% when 60 images were processed in parallel, (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. Introduction: The return home of patients who have suffered an acute cerebrovascular accident (ACVA) is fundamental if they are to be discharged from hospital and integrated into society. Our aim is to design an algorithm that can identify those patients with ACVA who will undergo a delay in discharge to their home. Patients and method: A total of 214 hemiplegic patients admitted to the Rehabilitation Service (SMRF) of the General Hospital were retrospectively studied. On admittance (a mean of 14 days after the stroke), 17 clinical and sociodemographic variables were collected and their relationship with delay in the return home (DRD) was studied. Multiple logistic regression analysis was used to calculate the formula of the prediction model and the probability tree for presenting DRD was drawn up. Results: Likelihood of DRD is determined by three variables: initial functional independence measurement (FIM) (above or below 50 points), age (older or younger than 75) and living alone (whether or not the patient lived alone before the ACVA). The combination of these variables makes it possible to construct an algorithm with eight different likelihood groups of DRD, between 3.6 and 79.6%. It has an 89% specificity, 40% sensitivity and 76% prediction value. Conclusions: An algorithm has been constructed to make a priori decisions about the probability of DRD. It uses the three variables with the greatest prediction ability: functional capacity on admittance (FIM), age and whether or not the patient lived alone. The purpose of this study is to develop a model for selecting an information system for a full-service restaurant management. This study is based on a comparative analysis of 40 information systems and 5 interviews with owners and managers in the restaurant industry in Saint Petersburg, who have experience in implementing and using of such information systems. During the research, 13 characteristics of restaurant management information systems were revealed: 5 major and 8 additional. These characteristics were analysed and further 9 of them (4 major and 5 additional) were used to create the restaurant management information system selection model. For the purposes of simplification of the algorithm and avoiding duplications of the branches of the decision tree, variables were used. The questions on which the developed model is based are simple for understanding for an ordinary person and do not require special knowledge in the field of information technologies.

A space-efficient simulation algorithm on probabilistic automata

In the context of probabilistic automata, time-efficient algorithms for simulation have been proposed lately. The space complexity thereof is quadratic in the size of the transition relation, thus space requirements often become the practical bottleneck. In this paper, we propose a space-efficient algorithm for computing simulation based on partition refinement. Experimental evidence is given showing that not only the space efficiency is improved drastically: The experiments often require orders of magnitude less time. In practice, they are even faster than the (asymptotically) optimal algorithm by Crafa and Ranzato (2012). (C) 2016 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Multi-argument Control Mode Switching Strategy for Adaptive Cruise Control System

Adaptive Cruise Control system contains the distance control function which is an extension of the conventional Cruise Control system. ACC system has to switch to appropriate control modes according to different traffic scenes. The existing switching strategies are generally designed based on two arguments including relative distance and relative velocity between the host vehicle and the preceding vehicle. Because switching thresholds of the existing methods are mostly determined based on steady states of control mode, the switching process cannot be continuous and smooth in many cases. In order to overcome the shortage of existing switching strategy, a new switch strategy is put forward in this paper which considers three arguments: distance, relative velocity and acceleration. This new strategy can make vehicle acceleration continuous and smooth during control mode switching, which improves the comfort performance of ACC system. Moreover, the decision algorithms of cruise mode, follow mode and approach mode in ACC system are built. The new switching strategy with three arguments is established in this paper. At last, the road tests show that the proposed switching strategy is able to switch to correct control mode according to actual traffic scenes. In addition, the switching progress is smoother than the existing two arguments switching strategy.

Primary Radical Therapy Selection in High-risk Non-metastatic Prostate Cancer

As the incidence of prostate cancer rises, the detection and management of men with high-risk non-metastatic prostate cancer is becoming increasingly important. The benefits of radical treatment have been clearly shown in this group from a number of publications. The current mainstays of treatment are radical prostatectomy (with selective use of adjuvant radiation) and radical radiotherapy with concurrent androgen deprivation. The outcomes from these two approaches seem to be remarkably similar and are considered equally valid options for primary treatment. The choice of therapy is critically dependent on a number of factors, but ultimately left to the decision of the patients with advice from clinicians. Clinicians themselves, however, are known to be biased towards their particular skill set and experiences. Attempts at randomised comparisons between these two modalities have so far failed and are confounded by patienteclinician bias, the continual advances in therapy as well as the long natural history of the disease. In the lack of level 1 comparable evidence, this article explores the existing literature as to the key factors that should be considered in radical treatment selection for high-risk prostate cancer. These factors include disease aggressiveness, comorbidity and life expectancy, functional outcomes and the consequences of therapy failure with regards to salvage treatment. We propose that these factors may be useful in developing a decision guide for rationale radical therapy selection in the light of two apparently equally effective treatments. Ultimately, however, there is an urgent need for added clinical and biological markers that can provide a more precise approach to therapy selection. (C) 2014 The Royal College of Radiologists. The determination of competency for decisions regarding one's care is of great individual importance as it represents a basic human right. Often, in Emergency Nursing, we are presented with situations that require difficult decisions that must be made in a brief time frame. The role of the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) in providing assessment and care to victims of assault is crucial to initiating the restoration of health and dignity of the patient in a tragic set of circumstances. Patients who present for SANE examination may have issues surrounding their capacity to make competent decisions regarding their assessment and care, further complicating an already tenuous situation. SANE nurses should be knowledgeable concerning competency and care issues and utilize a methodical process to guide their decision-making.
