SISO algorithms based on Max-Log-MAP and Log-MAP turbo decoding

Novel soft-input soft-output (SISO) decoding algorithms suitable for turbo codes are proposed with good compromise between complexity and bit error rate (BER) performance. The algorithms are based on the application of the max/max* (i.e. Jacobian logarithm) operations at different levels when computing the decoder soft-output value. It is observed that some decoding schemes from the authors' previously published work fall into the family of methods described here. The effect is to provide a range of possibilities allowing system designers to make their own choices for turbo code BER performance against complexity.

A dual-mode burst-error-correcting algorithm that combines maximum-likelihood decoding with a burst detection scheme is presented. The decoder nominally operates as a Viterbi decoder and switches to time diversity error recovery whenever an uncorrectable error pattern is identified. It is demonstrated that the new scheme outperforms interleaving strategies under the constraint of a fixed overall decoding delay. It also proves to be more powerful than known adaptive burst decoding schemes, such as the Gallager burst finding scheme. As the new method can be used with soft decision decoding, it is mainly intended for use on random-error channels affected by occasional severe bursts.

Loss and/or misrouting of cells in ATM or cell-based systems result in unreliable data transmission and thus in a degradation of service quality. Two main causes of loss and/or misrouting are the occurrence of the following: - statistically distributed errors in the transmission media and - overflow of intermediate memories in switching networks. Since the entire routing information is contained within the cell header, it is obvious that transmission errors which frequently occur may change this routing information, hence leading to either loss or misrouting of the cell. In this paper, the statistics of cell loss and misrouting due to transmission errors are developed. The results are discussed and examples are given proving that a one error-correcting code is necessary to ensure reliable data transmission and secure data reception.

MULTIUSER DETECTION scheme BASED ON CANCELING COCHANNEL INTERFERENCE FOR MFSK FH-SSMA SYSTEM

This paper proposes and investigates a multiuser detection scheme based on canceling cochannel interference (CCI) to improve spectral efficiency or to increase user capacity in an MFSK (multilevel frequency shift keying)/FH-SSMA (frequency hopping-spread spectrum multiple access) system. In the MFSK/FH-SSMA system, an address code is employed as a hopping sequence to hop the carrier frequency in MFSK. In the proposed scheme, it is assumed that the address codes of all users in MFSK/FH-SSMA are known. Then, candidates of the transmitted vector which are regenerated from the time-frequency matrices decoded by all the users' address codes are added with logical OR operation to produce candidates of the received matrix. The candidates of the received matrix are utilized in order to estimate a pattern of all users' data symbols which has the most number of coincident entries with the received matrix. Its BER (bit error rate) performance is evaluated by theoretical analysis and computer simulation in order to show the improvement of user capacity. Moreover, we investigate a hybrid scheme combining a multiuser detection scheme and the decoding scheme of an error-correcting code for the coded MFSK/FH-SSMA system.

Iterative decoding of parallel and serial concatenated single parity check product codes

An efficient, iterative soft-in-soft-out decoding scheme is employed for the parallel and serially concatenated single parity check (SPC) product codes, which has very low complexity, requiring only two addition-equivalent-operations per information bit. For a rate 0.8637 of parallel concatenated SPC product code, a performance of BER = 10(-5) at E-b/N-0 = 3.66 dB can be achieved using this decoding scheme, which is within 1 dB from the Shannon limit.

Intellectual property core protection of control data flow graphs using robust watermarking during behavioural synthesis based on user resource constraint and loop unrolling factor

A novel robust watermarking methodology for intellectual property core protection of control data flow graphs during behavioural synthesis based on user specified resource constraints and loop unrolling factor is proposed. The proposed methodology incorporates robust multi-variable signature encoding scheme for securing against typical attacks such as false claim of ownership and tampering. Some of the features of the watermarking include greater robustness, lower embedding cost, lower storage overhead, fault tolerance and faster encoding/decoding. Experimental results suggest that the watermarked solution generated by the proposed approach produces lower embedding cost than previous approaches, as well as is more secured due to its multi-variable signature encoding rules.

This paper is concerned with the problem of designing reduced-complexity Viterbi decoders for the transmission of digital data over intersymbol-interference channels. First, optimal state-grouping for constructing reduced-state trellises is presented and illustrative examples are given for multilevel transmission over partial-response channels of the type 1 +/- D(n), (1 + D)2, (1 + D)2 (1 - D), and (1 + D)3 (1 - D). Then, the quaternary 1 - D type partial-response channel is considered in more detail and a difference-metric algorithm employing state-reduction is derived and shown to result in a simple decoding scheme.

Neuronal Population decoding Explains the Change in Signal Detection Sensitivity Caused by Task-Irrelevant Perceptual Bias

Spatiotemporal context in sensory stimulus has profound effects on neural responses and perception, and it sometimes affects task difficulty. Recently reported experimental data suggest that human detection sensitivity to motion in a target stimulus can be enhanced by adding a slow surrounding motion in an orthogonal direction, even though the illusory motion component caused by the surround is not relevant to the task. It is not computationally clear how the task-irrelevant component of motion modulates the subject's sensitivity to motion detection. In this study, we investigated the effects of encoding biases on detection performance by modeling the stochastic neural population activities. We modeled two types of modulation on the population activity profiles caused by a contextual stimulus: one type is identical to the activity evoked by a physical change in the stimulus, and the other is expressed more simply in terms of response gain modulation. For both encoding schemes, the motion detection performance of the ideal observer is enhanced by a task-irrelevant, additive motion component, replicating the properties observed for real subjects. The success of these models suggests that human detection sensitivity can be characterized by a noisy neural encoding that limits the resolution of information transmission in the cortical visual processing pathway. On the other hand, analyses of the neuronal contributions to the task predict that the effective cell populations differ between the two encoding schemes, posing a question concerning the decoding schemes that the nervous system used during illusory states.

We present a novel decoding scheme for slotted ALOHA which is based on concepts from physical-layer network coding (PNC) and multi-user detection (MUD). In addition to recovering individual user packets from a packet collision as it is usually done with MUD, the receiver applies PNC to decode packet combinations that can be used to retrieve the original packets using information available from other slots. We evaluate the novel scheme and compare it with another scheme based on PNC that has been proposed recently and show that both attain important gains compared to basic successive interference cancellation. This suggests that combining PNC and MUD can lead to significant gains with respect to previously proposed methods on either one or the other.
