We analyse different deployment setups for circuit breaker, a design pattern for preventing cascading failures by guarding calls towards a target service. Then, we define a unifying implementation strategy in the setting of microservices, by using the Jolie programming language. Our implementation captures all setups with a single program, by interpreting a circuit breaker as a decorator that is generic on the interface of its target service.

With the development of web service applications, how to improve the efficiency of service discovery is an important research work in service computing era. Based on the service clusters which are formed through service clustering, this paper uses the decorator pattern ideology to organize the service clusters according to the collaborative relationships between them. The tree structure is used to express the organized service clusters with certain correlations, and it helps to realize service discovery efficiently. It also discusses how to add new services to the service cluster organization dynamically. The experiment results show the method can enhance the efficiency of services ( atomic and composite services) discovery.

With growing concerns regarding climate change and rising energy costs, there is an increased focus on improving the energy efficiency of software. One relevant avenue of research is the transformation of software designs in order to increase efficiency and reduce energy consumption. Design patterns are of interest here as the indirection they introduce is likely to have a detrimental effect on energy consumption. In this paper we report on our investigations into the impact on energy consumption of the decorator pattern, which is a structural design pattern used to enable additional behaviour to be attached to an individual component dynamically. Application of this pattern improves the maintainability of software at the cost of increased indirection and redundancy, which may reduce energy efficiency. In this paper we explore features of the decorator pattern that impact on its systematic removal, with a future goal of removing this pattern using automated refactoring. We subsequently examine experimentally the decorator pattern's impact on energy consumption in Java and find its implementation results in an increased number of instantiated objects and method invocations at run-time. The removal of the pattern can result in up to a 96% reduction in energy consumption in a best-case scenario with a textbook example, and up to a 5% reduction in energy consumption in an open-source project with a case study examining JUnit, a popular unit testing framework for Java. These results demonstrate the energy savings achievable with the removal of decorator pattern instances and open the way for similar investigations of other design patterns.

RViz: a toolkit for real domain data visualization

In computational science and computer graphics, there is a strong requirement to represent and visualize information in the real domain, and many visualization data structures and algorithms have been proposed to achieve this aim. Unfortunately, the dataflow model that is often selected to address this issue in visualization systems is not flexible enough to visualize newly invented data structures and algorithms because this scheme can accept only specific data structures. To address this problem, we propose a new visualization tool, RViz, which is independent of the input information data structures. Since there is no requirement for additional efforts to manage the flow networks and the interface to abstracted information is simple in RViz, any scientific information visualization algorithms are easier to implement than the dataflow model. In this paper, we provide case studies in which we have successfully implemented new data structures and related algorithms using RViz, including geometry synthesis, distance field representation, and implicit surface reconstruction. Through these cases, we show how RViz helps users visualize and understand any hidden insights in input information.

Collection Framework developed by Joshua Bloch and included in java core library after JDK version-1.2. Although, Collection framework Classes are widely used in today's environment to develop java application. Java application programs suffer from a major problem of complexity and un-scalability. In this paper, a framework is proposed which encapsulates java collection framework classes (TreeSet, LinkedList, HashTable etc) complex hierarchy in to a single class that is based on properties(e.g. data structure used, uniqueness, synchronization). The framework can greatly reduce the efforts required to learn and use the complex hierarchy of Collection Framework. Also the proposed framework uses the identical method signature as the original Collection Framework which makes it easy to learn for those who earlier use Collection Framework for data storage. Thus users can easily switch to this new framework.

Detecting design pattern instances from source codes can assist the understanding of the systems. This paper presents an approach to the detection of design patterns based on graph isomorphism. We introduce two kinds of graphs, among which one represents the system design and the other describes the design patterns to be recovered. In order to detect instances of design patterns, we first identify in system graph all the candidate classes that correspond to the pattern classes. Afterwards we select some of candidate classes to form the sub-graphs of system graph, which are then checked isomorphic to the pattern graph or not. Those isomorphic sub-graphs are regarded to be corresponding to instances of the design patterns. The detection of decorator pattern is given as the example to show the effectiveness of the approach.

We present a framework based on object orientation with novel principles for how to store, analyze and integrate electrophysiological data. These principles are: (I) Using a decorator pattern for storing analysis data in an object model, (II) using a Core Classes data structure for integration through mediation in a service bus architecture, and (III) choosing the single unit as the finest structure of the object model. With these principles, we address the problems of (1) how to relate the analysis data to the original electrophysiological data by utilizing design patterns, (2) how to integrate data from different data sources, both at application and organization levels and (3) avoiding performance problems by choosing the correct level of object granularity for the data.

The use of design patterns usually changes the approach of software design and makes software development relatively easy. This paper extends work on a forensic model for Logical Traffic Isolation (LTI) based on Differentiated Services (DiffServ) and designs the LTI model using different design patterns. Since design patterns add reliability, flexibility and reusability characteristics to a software system, this paper focuses on three design patterns in modeling the LTI architecture to achieve reusability and flexibility of the LTI model. This model is viewed as a three-tier architecture, which for experimental purposes is composed of the following components: traffic generator, DiffServ network and the sink server. The Mediator pattern is used to coordinate the traffic generator, sink server and, or preservation components, that is DiffServ domain is considered as the mediator. This study uses different design patterns to show how various patterns can be used to design the system.
