Central-Symmetry decoupling technique for Circularly-Polarized MIMO System of Tightly Packed Chinese-character Shaped Patch Antennas

This article presents a novel decoupling technique for the circularly polarized multiple-input multiple-output (CP-MIMO) system composed of Guo- shaped patch antennas. A comparative study has been conducted on antenna performance as a function of packing distance before and after applying the technique. A prototype of two-element Guo-shaped patch MIMO at a small inter-element spacing of 12.5 mm has devised aiming for the 5G new radio n38 (2.57-2.62 GHz) applications. Simulation reinforced with experimental results confirmed the effectiveness of the proposed technique, whereas the two Guo-shaped patch elements packed in such small spacing can be operated independently. Both the envelope correlation coefficient and diversity gain are approaching their ideal values.

A Novel Calculation Method to Design Parasitic decoupling technique for Two Antennas

In this paper, a systematic and calculation-based parasitic decoupling technique (PDT) is proposed to mitigate the mutual coupling between two closely coupled antennas. The adopted parasitic decoupling structure consists of two transmission lines connected to the feed lines of antennas and a parasitic element connected with a transmission line and terminated by a reactive load. Rigorous decoupling theory and systematic design procedures are presented. The lengths of transmission lines and value of reactive load can be precisely calculated to increase antenna isolation. The superiority of the proposed PDT is verified by four decoupling examples. The simulated and measured results show that high isolations over 24 dB, efficiencies above 70%, and envelop correlation coefficients below 0.05 are achieved simultaneously. The results indicate the proposed PDT a promising decoupling method for MIMO systems.

Self-Curing decoupling technique for MIMO Antenna Arrays in Mobile Terminals

The self-curing decoupling technique is substantially extended to apply to multi-input multi-output (MIMO) antenna arrays in mobile terminals. Using this proposed technique, the mutual coupling between antennas can be reduced by inlaying lumped element capacitors on the ground plane. The decoupling method does not require any physical connection or obstruction between coupled antennas. The significance of the proposed decoupling technique is fourfold: 1) it works for inverted-F antennas (IFAs), monopole antennas, and loop antennas, the most three commonly used antenna forms for mobile terminals;2) the inherent improvement on matching conditions after decoupling;3) the flexibility in implementation owing to its detachment from the antenna body;and 4) the applicability to an array with more than two elements. Four demonstrating examples, including two IFAs, two monopole antennas, two loop antennas, and a MIMO array with four elements of different antenna types are studied by EM modeling, passive tests, and MIMO over-the-air (OTA) measurements. The experimental results show that significant improvements in port isolation (from 9 to 30 dB), total efficiency (from 53% to 69%), and above all, the system data throughput can be achieved. The working mechanism of the method is revealed and justified through the partial element equivalent circuit (PEEC) model in the fifth example.

Railway interaction is characterised by the coupling between the train and the track introduced through the wheel/rail contact. The introduction of the flexibility in the wheelset and the track through the finite element (FE) method in the last four decades has permitted to study high-frequency phenomena such as rolling noise and squeal, whose origin lies in the strongly non-steady state and non-linear behaviour of the contact forces that arise from the small contact area. In order to address models with a large number of degrees of freedom, innovative Eulerian-modal models for wheelsets with rotation and cyclic tracks have been developed in recent years. The aim of this paper is to extend the resulting formulation to an uncoupled linear matrix equation of motion that allows solving each equation independently for each time step, considerably reducing the associated computational cost. The decoupling integration method proposed is compared in terms of computational performance with Newmark and Runge-Kutta schemes, commonly used in vehicle dynamics, for simulations with the leading wheelset negotiating a tangent track and accounting the rail roughness.

Multifunctional graphene sensor for detection of environment signals using a decoupling technique

Graphene is one of good candidates for application to multifunctional sensors due to its unique material properties, extremely high surface-to-volume ratio and ability to be effectively co-integrated on various substrates. However, the electrical properties of graphene are sensitive to most typical environment signals such as temperature, light, humidity, and gas. Therefore, to develop graphene-based multifunctional sensors, it is essential to identify multiple environment information values from the output characteristics of a single graphene sensor. In this study, we developed a temperature-illuminance multifunctional graphene sensor that can identify both temperature and illuminance values. We also propose a decoupling technique to enable the precise identification of temperature and illuminance values from the output characteristics of a sensor that has cross-sensitivity to the both inputs. This decoupling technique is developed based on the different gate-voltage dependence of the temperature- and illumination-induced modulations of the graphene conductivity. The results show that graphene can be used as a material for multifunctional sensors when combined with an appropriate decoupling technique for identifying various types of environment signals.

Self-Curing decoupling technique for Two Inverted-F Antennas With Capacitive Loads

A new concept named the self-curing decoupling technique is proposed for the first time to reduce the mutual coupling between two closely located inverted-F antennas (IFAs). The decoupling technique only requires a capacitive load on the shorting arm of each coupled IFA without connecting a circuitry or inserting a physical structure between the two coupled antennas. The capacitive load occupies very little space and is frequency-insensitive;therefore, the decoupling technique is a very favorable choice for low-frequency applications. Network analysis is presented to mathematically justify the working mechanism and to provide a design guideline. Several practical cases of two IFAs situated at different positions on the periphery of a PCB board are studied. The experimental results show that with the decoupling technique, significant improvements in the port isolation (from 10 to 20 dB), antenna correlation coefficient (from 0.25 to 0.05), multiplexing efficiency (from 46% to 60%), and above all the system throughput (1.2 and 0.8 dB power saving in Urban Microcell and Urban Macrocell channels, respectively) can be obtained.

Five-port MIMO antenna for n79-5G band with improved isolation by diversity and decoupling techniques

A compact five-port multi-input multi-output (MIMO) antenna for n79 (4.4-5 GHz) 5G band exhibiting pattern and polarization diversity with good isolation is proposed in this paper. This MIMO antenna system comprises of four linearly polarized (LP) endfire monopole antenna elements and one broadside L-shaped slot circularly polarized (CP) antenna element, which provides both pattern and polarization diversity. A T-shaped slot as a decoupling structure is further used to improve the interport isolation by 4 dB. The return loss bandwidth for all antenna elements is in the desired frequency range, and antenna elements provide isolation better than 23 dB. The pattern and polarization diversity provide a low envelope correlation coefficient and good isolation between any two-port of the MIMO antenna. For experimental verification, the proposed 5-port MIMO antenna system is fabricated and measured, which provides decent agreement with the simulated performance.

Design of compact UWB antenna using characteristic mode analysis and its quad-port MIMO realization with novel isolation technique

This paper presents a miniaturized Quad-Port MIMO antenna for UWB application. Employing Characteristic Mode Analysis, the single element UWB antenna is analysed to achieve a compact design. Using the Theory of Characteristic Mode, the significant modes and their current distribution are analysed, which helps to modify the radiator and ground plane to generate more significant modes to yield a wider frequency band. Four circular-shaped radiators with tapered feeds are placed orthogonally on the FR4 substrate to improve isolation, and partial ground planes are located on the opposite surface. Furthermore, a modified Pattee-cross-shaped parasitic element is introduced between the antenna elements and shorted with the ground planes via metallic shorting pins. This novel technique improves isolation compared to the conventional integration method of the partial ground planes through strip lines. The proposed antenna achieves less than -20 dB mutual coupling over most of the frequency band ranging from 2.51-18 GHz.

Three-element circularly polarized MIMO antenna with self-decoupled probing method for B5G-V2X communications

In this article, a three-element circularly polarized multiple-input-multiple-output (CP-MIMO) antenna array with self-decoupled probing method is introduced. Three unidirectional radiated Guo-shaped patch antennas were arranged in a triangular lattice and excited by L- shaped feeding probes at different locations with respect to the patch center. Meanwhile, the patches themselves remained artistic and were placed in the upward position. Namely, the main motivation is to generate CP directional beams without requiring orthogonal placement. The con-tributions of this work account for (i) spatial diversity, (ii) pattern diversity, (iii) polarization diver-sity, and (iv) enhanced isolations (25 dB) between patch elements without inserting any external decoupling structures. As such, the antenna efficiency of Guo-patch elements can be raised in an order of 90 % within the band of interest at IEEE 802.11n/g/ac, viz., 2.4-2.5 GHz. The CP-MIMO prototype was fabricated and validated with experimental tests. Outstanding performance metrics such as an envelope correlation coefficient (ECC) of 0.005, mean effective gain (MEG) of-3.5 dB, channel capacity loss (CCL) of 0.18b/s/Hz, and a total active reflection coefficient (TRAC) of better than-15 dB were obtained. The measured results, which agreed with theoretical simula-tions, confirmed that the multi-element MIMO antenna with the spatial-, pattern-and polarization-diversity is a good candidate for the multi-user B5G-V2X.(c) 2022 THE AUTHORS.
