We choose Unified Modeling Language (UML) as the foundation to model the proposed solution of the Multi Software Product Lines (MPL) interoperability challenge. The proposed pseudo-code is modeled as an extension of the UML meta-model to support MPL. The model serves to provide a standard representation of MPL and an intuitive transformation to an Object-oriented programming (OOP) language. Some extension to the UML that yet to have intuitive translation into common OO language are augmented with a mechanism using a build automation system. This mechanism provides manual transformation that gives us some hints whether the proposed solution fulfilled the evaluation criteria. The given challenge case has been written in our proposed pseudo-code, modeled in our UML extension, and translated into Java source code and Gradle build scripts. By invoking Gradle tasks, we can simulate product generation that creates products as Java objects.

We present a realization of multi software product lines in the Java programming language that permits full interoperability and hierarchical dependencies among multiple product variants. This concept, called variability modules (VM), is implemented in terms of an architectural pattern in Java and does not require any pre-processing or language extension. It can be used with any Java development environment. The VM architectural pattern comes with a dedicated UML profile, which makes it possible to present variability to non-technical stakeholders. We evaluate our approach with the help of a real-world case study.

A Software Product Line (SPL) is a set of programs, called variants, which are generated from a common artifact base. delta-oriented programming (DOP) is a flexible approach to implement SPLs. This short paper summarises the contributions published in [10]. A foundation for rigorous development of delta-oriented product lines of statecharts is provided by defining: a core language for statecharts, DOP on top of it, an analysis ensuring that a product line is well-formed (i.e., all variants can be generated and are well-formed statecharts). An implementation of the analysis has been applied to an industrial case study.

Managing variability in a software family is crucial to software product line engineering. The existing variability management techniques, however do not particularly address database design in the context of information systems product lines. This paper presents a practical approach to handle variability in database design for families of software. We use the technique of delta-oriented programming when a product is constructed by adding a number of delta modules to a core module incrementally, based on the features selected in the product configuration. We use SQL Data Definition Language to model core and delta modules. We present rules for consistency checking of the delta scripts based on the database consistency constraints to generate a valid consistent database schema for the product. Also we analyze the cases in which a conflict arises based on inconsistencies between delta modules. The fact that DDL is widely known to software developers, along with modularity and scalability of the proposed method makes it suitable to be used in industrial real world applications.

Combining microservices and software product line engineering (SPLE) is a challenge in variability management. This paper proposes a solution to that challenge by re-engineering existing webshop systems into a product line application. We first perform feature identification to analyze the features of subject systems. We introduce a mechanism that models the variability and designs a software product line architecture based on existing features. We use a UML diagram with the UML-DOP profile to abstract microservice variability in SPLE. Then, a transformation into a product line application is conducted to generate running applications based on selected features. We utilize a preliminary framework of microservice variability based on delta-oriented programming.

A Software Product Line (SPL) is a family of similar programs (called variants) generated from a common artifact base. A Multi SPL (MPL) is a set of interdependent SPLs (i.e., such that an SPL's variant can depend on variants from other SPLs). MPLs are challenging to model and implement efficiently, especially when different variants of the same SPL must coexist and interoperate. We address this challenge by introducing variability modules (VMs), a new language construct. A VM represents both a module and an SPL of standard (variability-free), possibly interdependent modules. Generating a variant of a VM triggers the generation of all variants required to fulfill its dependencies. Then, a set of interdependent VMs represents an MPL that can be compiled into a set of standard modules. We illustrate VMs by an example from an industrial modeling scenario, formalize them in a core calculus, provide an implementation for the Java-like modeling language ABS, and evaluate VMs by case studies.

Software Product Lines (SPLs) exploit reuse-in-the-large to enable customization by explicitly modeling commonalities and variabilities of closely related software systems. Different approaches exist to enable SPL development and product creation by using modular languages, such as Feature-oriented programming (FOP) (compositional) or delta-oriented programming (DOP) (transformational). These languages incorporate, e.g., object-oriented languages, adding a layer of variability. Creating a variability-aware Abstract Syntax Graph (ASG), i.e., an ASG that contains the complete variability of the SPL, facilitates family-based analyses and is essential for supporting developers during SPL development. To this end, name resolution has to be performed. However, name resolution for these languages is a challenge as multiple declarations for the same element may occur in different modules. In this paper, we propose four name resolution strategies for compositional and transformational SPL realization languages and discuss their benefits and drawbacks, categorized by relevant application scenarios of the ASG.

Real product families need to evolve in ways that are not always anticipated by a pre-planned design. Any given approach for software product lines will likely lead to both positive and negative consequences during unanticipated software evolution. Unfortunately, we know little about the evolvability characteristics of SPL approaches that concern both modelling and implementation, limiting our ability to make rational and disciplined decisions about adoption. We conduct a case study into the unanticipated evolution of a software product family using two approaches: separate products versus a common codebase using delta-oriented programming (DOP). We compare the ease of change within the two versions through a set of quantitative measurements and qualitative observations. We find that both versions have strengths and weaknesses: complexity and incomplete support from DOP tools versus significant duplication and error-proneness in the separate products.

Multi product lines (MPLs) are systems consisting of collections of interdependent software product lines (SPLs). The dependencies and interactions among the SPLs cause new challenges in variability management. In the case of a large-scale information system MPL, important issues are raised regarding integration of the databases of the individual SPLs comprising the main system. The aim of this paper is to introduce a method to manage the variability in the data model of such systems. To this end, we first address the problem of developing a universal feature model of the MPL, obtained from integrating the feature models of the individual SPLs, incorporating the data interdependencies among the features. Further, we develop the data model of the MPL using a delta-oriented technique, based on the universal feature model. Our method addresses the problem of possible conflicts among the data model elements of different SPLs and proposes techniques to resolve the conflicts based on data model refinements.

A Software Product Line (SPL) exploits reuse-in-the-large to enable customization by explicitly modeling commonalities and variabilities of closely related software systems. delta-oriented programming (DOP) is a flexible implementation approach to SPL engineering, which transforms an existing core product to another desired product by applying transformation operations. By capturing product alterations related to configurable functionality within delta modules, DOP closely resembles a natural process of software development, which proves beneficial in early stages of development. However, increasing complexity for a growing SPL in later development stages caused by the invasiveness of DOP drastically impairs maintenance and extensibility. Hence, a process utilizing the invasiveness of DOP in early development stages and restricting it in later stages would allow developers to mature growing delta-oriented SPLs. Moreover, ever-increasing complexity requires means to migrate into less invasive development approaches that are more suited for large-scale configurable applications. To this end, we propose a development process for delta-oriented SPLs including explicit variability points, metrics and refactorings as well as a semi-automatic reengineering of a delta-oriented SPL into a development approach based on blackbox-components. In this paper, we sketch this development process with its constituents and point out required research essential for successfully maturing a delta-oriented SPL.
