A Distributed Energy Resources (DER) system, composed of distributed generation and storage units, has been proposed as a promising enhancement to the traditional power grids. One key challenge to implement a DER system, however, places on standardizing the communication network for seamless information exchange. As one approach, this paper focuses on integrating IEC 61850, which is an international unified standard for standardizing the communication network within a substation, into a DER system, using the UCLA SMERC building as test bed. To this end, we discuss a mathematical model of PV generation, present a representative demand profile, and develop a battery charging/discharging control algorithm. Moreover, we demonstrate a procedure to integrate IEC 61850 into the DER system step by step, with configuring the communication network and defining the data structure for the information exchange.

Amplitude death is a coupling induced stabilization of a fixed point in nonlinear oscillators. This phenomenon cannot be observed in two identical nonlinear oscillators coupled by a diffusive connection. However, it has been analytically confirmed that a diffusive dynamic coupling can induce death. This study derives a necessary and sufficient condition for amplitude death in van der Pol oscillators coupled by a diffusive dynamic coupling. The well-known RC line (T-type) is used to implement the dynamic coupling.

This paper describes development of a three-phase unbalanced distribution network test case, considering primary and secondary level distribution systems. Primary feeders, lateral feeders, and secondary feeders are modeled from the substation transformer to the house level based on the network's physical hierarchical structure. Researchers can use the developed benchmark for test case analysis and to address issues associated with integration of rooftop photovoltaics (PVs) and distributed energy resources (DER) in existing unbalanced networks, including incremental power losses, voltage violations, voltage fluctuations, volt/var control, and other power quality concerns.

Microgrids (MG) with renewable energy resources have shown competitive operational advantages for smart grid integration. In the wake of events such as the July 2012 India blackout, recent interest has been directed to the deployment of MGs in grid-independent (islanded) settings. In this paper we develop an autonomous distributed framework for cooperation amongst a set of grid-independent microgrids to improve the overall microgrid network (MGN) reliability. We further develop an enhanced distributed algorithm to support the proposed system. This work adopts a game theoretic approach via coalition formation games (CFG) formulation for static and dynamic MGNs. We consider MGNs with variable renewable distributed energy resources (DER) penetration levels and variable wind generation percentage of the total renewable generation mix. Main results show cooperation gains for cooperative MGN, study the effects of rate policies, and show how the proposed system performs under different renewable DER penetration levels and wind generation percentages.

In this paper, an integrated and modular control design is developed for distributed energy resources (DERs) to stabilize power systems and minimize effects of load variations and intermittent generation. Traditionally, the droop control of each generator (or virtual power plant) works as a local feedback loop to track frequency during load disturbance, whereas automatic generation control (AGC) calculates control signals and sends them to each generator with the goal of matching the total generation and load in the overall system. The droop control and the AGC work separately, therefore the two controls often conflict each other. The proposed design enables us to modularly synthesize an integrated control for each of the DERs by using both local and wide-area measurements so that the controls work together in enhancing stability and performance of the power system. The design methodology admits the full nonlinear power flow equations, and it results in a data-driven control that in real-time takes into account the nonlinear power flow interactions (in terms of current angle measurements) and adaptively adjusts parameters of the controls that operate the DERs. The design framework uses the concept of passivity-short systems to analyze individual DERs and quantify their dynamic responses in such a way that the resulting system-wide implementation becomes plug-and-play. Simulations are done to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed methodology and design.

Dispersive Ultrasonic Delay Lines Using the First Longitudinal Mode in a Strip

The existence of a dispersive longitudinal mode of propagation of elastic waves in a narrow strip is demonstrated experimentally. This mode corresponds closely to that predicted theoretically for the infinite plate with stress free surfaces. Experimental delay lines using the first longitudinal mode in an aluminum alloy strip have been made. For a midband frequency of about 2 megacycles and a midband delay of about 1 millisecond these delay lines have typical insertion losses of 15 db, typical discrimination to unwanted responses of 40 db over a 10 per cent band, delay changes of about 40 per cent of midband delay for frequency changes of about 15 per cent of midband frequency, and departures from linearity in the dependence of delay on frequency of about 1.2 per cent of midband delay for a frequency range of 15 per cent of the midband frequency. In this paper, large-signal S-parameters are reviewed, and transistors of Class-C are employed. Problems are encountered in obtaining large-signal parameters S12and S21. A novel method is concisely developed, based on theory presented herein. The acquired S-parameters parameters are applied to amplifier design accordingly. The predicted and measured output power are compared, and suitable conclusions are duly recorded. Copyright © 1978 by The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc.

Distributed Resources in the Smart Grid, such as Distributed Generation (DG) and Responsive Loads (RL) are capable of providing a wide range of ancilliary services, if properly coordinated. However, because of their large numbers and distributed nature, using a fully centralized communication structure to achieve coordination can be prohibitive, due to scale and cost. Decentralized approaches based on multi-agent systems theory have been proposed and are focused on linear consensus algorithms that asymptotically converge to a cooperative solution. In this paper, an alternative approach, which converges in a finite number of steps is formulated. The protocol is based on linear iterative updates and known observability results from graph structured linear systems. Here, the protocol is also modified to address a generalized cooperation problem in the context of DG/ RL coordination. Furthermore, the protocol is modified to reduce the number of operations per step, ensuring that it is applicable to a large scale grid, which is usually the case in practice. The applicability of the approach is verified through simulations, for the case of grid voltage support through Distributed Generation.

The transition towards a cyber-physical energy system (CPES) entails an increased dependency on valid data. Simultaneously, an increasing implementation of renewable generation leads to possible control actions at individual distributed energy resources (DERs). A state estimation covering the whole system, including individual DER, is time consuming and numerically challenging. This paper presents the approach and results of implementing a simplified state estimator onto an embedded system for improving DER monitoring. The implemented state estimator is based on numerically robust orthogonal factorization and used on a set of state equations of a generic wind turbine generator (WTG). The simplified state estimator is tested by simulating a generic WTG model and evaluated based on its execution time and estimation accuracy. Results show its fast execution time, its accuracy in handling normal measurement error and its ability to provide reliable data in the case of gross errors in the set of measurements.
